Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra 9-10

Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra 9-10

Offering a reading of the intermarriage debate and expulsion of the foreign women in Ezra 9-10 this book engages with the production and performance of masculinities in this biblical text shifting the focus away from the 'foreign women' to the men who are the primary actors in this work. This approach addresses the diversity of masculinities and the ways in which they are implicated in the production of power relations in the text. It explores the ‘feminized’ masculinity of the peoples-of-the-lands the unstable masculinity of the golah Ezra’s performance of penitential masculinity and the rehabilitation of divine masculinity. The rejection of the marriages and the call for the expulsion of the women and children are addressed as sites on which masculinities and power relations are configured. In doing so this book sheds light on how women and the traits and performances culturally ascribed to women femininity and inferior masculinities are appropriated to produce masculinities and negotiate power relations between men. It posits that the debate in Ezra 9-10 is not ultimately about the women themselves but about bringing the masculinities bodies and practices of dissenting men under the ‘management’ of those who wield the Torah in the narrative world of the text. Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra-9-10 is of interest for scholars and students working on the Book of Ezra specifically as well as the Hebrew Bible and its world more broadly. It is also a valuable study for those working on masculinities and gender in the biblical world and ancient Near East. | Men Masculinities and Intermarriage in Ezra 9-10

Key Debates in the Translation of Advertising Material Special Issue of the Translator (Volume 10/2 2004)

Much has been written about the marketing aspects of promotional material in general and several scholars (particularly in linguistics) have addressed questions relating to the structure and function of advertisements focusing on images rhetorical structure semiotic functions discourse features and audio-visual media amongst other aspects of the genre. Not much on the other hand has been written within translation studies about the complexities involved in the transfer of an advertising message. Contributors to this volume explore various interdependent aspects of the interlingual and intercultural transfer of an advertising message. They emphasize features of culture specificity of multi-medial semiotic interaction of values and stereotypes and most importantly they recommend strategies and approaches to assist translators. Topics covered include a critique of the Western-based approach to advertising in the context of the Far East; different perceptions of the concept of cleanliness in advertising texts in Italy Russia and the UK; the Walls Cornetto strategy of internationalization of product appeal followed by localization; the role of the translator in recreating appeal in different lingua-cultural contexts; what constitutes 'Italianness' in advertisements for British consumers; and strategies for repackaging France as a tourist destination. | Key Debates in the Translation of Advertising Material Special Issue of the Translator (Volume 10/2 2004)

The Spatialities of Radio Astronomy

The Spatialities of Radio Astronomy

The Spatialities of Radio Astronomy examines the multidisciplinary overlap between the spatial disciplines and the studies of science and technology through a comparative study of four of the world’s most important radio telescopes. Employing detailed analysis historical research interviews personal observations and various conceptual manoeuvres Guy Trangoš reveals the depth of spatial process active at these scientific sites and the territories they traverse. Through the conceptual frameworks of territory hyper-concentration and contingency Trangoš interprets the telescope as exploded across space and time present in multiple connected sites simultaneously and active in the production of space. He develops a historiographic and contemporary analysis of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA Chile); the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST China); the Arecibo Observatory (Puerto Rico); and the MeerKAT/SKA (South Africa). These case studies are global exemplars of the different spatial transformations that occur through science. Their relationships to surrounding communities and landscapes reveal deeper constitutional processes embodied in each institutional and spatial form. This book spans the modern history of architecture and science the studies of science technology and society and urban theory. It is of specific interest to architects and designers expanding their analysis of spatial production scholars in the study of geography landscape science technology and astronomy and people fascinated with how these radio telescopes were conceptualised built and operate today.

An Introduction to Sonar Systems Engineering

An Introduction to Sonar Systems Engineering

An Introduction to Sonar Systems Engineering Second Edition Important topics that are fundamental to the understanding of modern-day sonar systems engineering are featured. Linear planar and volume array theory including near-field and far-field beam patterns beam steering and array focusing are covered. Real-world arrays such as the twin-line planar array and a linear array of triplets which are solutions to the port/starboard (left/right) ambiguity problem associated with linear towed arrays are examined in detail. Detailed explanations of the fundamentals of side-looking (side-scan) and synthetic-aperture sonars are presented. Bistatic scattering with moving platforms is explored with derivations of exact solutions for the time delay time-compression/time-expansion factor and Doppler shift at a receiver for both the scattered and direct acoustic paths. Time-domain and frequency-domain descriptions and the design of CW LFM and Doppler-invariant HFM pulses are explained. Target detection in the presence of reverberation and noise is examined. Time-domain and frequency-domain descriptions of MFSK MQAM and OFDM underwater acoustic communication signals are also discussed. Although the book is mathematically rigorous it is written in a tutorial style. Many useful practical design and analysis equations for both passive and active sonar systems are derived from first principles. No major steps in the derivation of important results are skipped – all assumptions and approximations are clearly stated. Particular attention is paid to the correct units for functions and parameters. Many figures tables examples and practical homework problems at the end of each chapter are included to aid in the understanding of the material covered. New to the Second Edition Chapter 15 Synthetic-Aperture Sonar Chapter 13 Section 13. 3 The Rectangular-Envelope HFM Pulse Chapter 10 Section 10. 7 Moving Platforms was rewritten which allowed for the elimination of Appendix 10C from the first edition New explanations/discussions were added to Subsections 1. 2. 1 and 1. 3. 1 in Chapter 1 Appendix 1A was rewritten and the new Table 1A-1 was added to Chapter 1 A solutions manual is available for adopting professors
