Remaking Cities Urban Reforms in Ahmedabad and Kanpur India

Remaking Cities Urban Reforms in Ahmedabad and Kanpur India

This book presents a systematic analysis of the differential implementation of the urban reforms in two Indian cities Ahmedabad and Kanpur. It analyses the enactment of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) launched in 2005 by the Indian government which aimed to spatially reorient cities into market-friendly places across 65 cities but finished with only modest success. The volume discusses the specificities of urban governance systems colonial municipal histories and nationalist struggle in relation to urban planning and policy reforms to showcase how policies insensitive to these are likely to fail. It identifies historically constituted municipal capacity – located in the municipal organisation at the city level – as the key determinant of divergent trajectories of the spatial changes. The analysis demonstrates that in Ahmedabad the politics of the city was historically oriented towards peoples’ relationship with their spaces enabling a coherent municipal organisation. In the case of Kanpur however the local politics evolved in a way that the urban question remained unresolved which resulted in a fragmented municipal organisation. This variation in the architectures of municipal organisations in the two cities resulted in different levels of municipal capacities at the time of the inauguration of the JNNURM. A richly detailed case study on urban governance issues and development in Indian cities this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of urban studies urban politics development studies social anthropology social history political science development studies public policy and governance urban sociology and South Asian studies. | Remaking Cities Urban Reforms in Ahmedabad and Kanpur India

Teacher Development in India Building on Grassroots Innovations and Technology

Teacher Development in India Building on Grassroots Innovations and Technology

This volume shows how grassroots educational innovations and technology can be brought together in a fresh approach to human resource development in public social services. Based on a three-decade-long engagement with innovation in public education this book provides an illustration of how teacher-driven innovations can be transformed into learning objects for technology-based professional development. It describes how innovations can be identified screened and validated and disseminated through two mechanisms—a clearinghouse-based approach and grassroots innovation “fairs. ” It then demonstrates how these innovations can form the backbone of a “third space ” problem-based-learning curriculum which can be delivered through a technology platform for large-scale professional development. The book offers guidance on practical ways of doing this and on evaluating the curriculum’s impact with case studies of programmes that covered thousands of teachers. This book will be of interest to teachers students and professionals in education teacher education digital education information technology communication and media studies. It will also be useful to educationists policymakers teacher educators educational institutions online education centres and practitioners involved in professional development education and training in developing countries. | Teacher Development in India Building on Grassroots Innovations and Technology

Modern Frames and Premodern Themes in Indian Philosophy Border Self and the Other

This book presents a fascinating examination of modern Indian philosophical thought from the margins. It considers the subject from two perspectives – how it has been understood beyond India and how Indian thinkers have treated Western ideas in the context of Indian society.
