The State and Big Business in Russia Understanding Kremlin–Business Relations in the Early Putin Era

The Soviet Colossus History and Aftermath

The Soviet Colossus History and Aftermath

The Soviet Colossus revisits the turning points in Russia’s modern history from the fall of the tsarist regime to the establishment of the Bolshevik dictatorship and Stalinist totalitarianism; the reforms and counter-reforms of Khrushchev and Brezhnev to the reform program of Mikhail Gorbachev and the resultant collapse of the Soviet Union; and from the effort to build a democratic and free-market Russia under Boris Yeltsin to the political authoritarianism and the establishment of a state capitalist economy under Vladimir Putin. This eighth edition has been revised and updated to cover the latest developments from the Putin administration. These revisions include added emphasis on the increasing authoritarian nature of Russia’s political system the serious challenges posed by the country’s unsolved economic and social problems and the growing tensions between Russia on the one hand and the United States and the European Union on the other as a result of Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine. Kort combines this updated account with a broad exploration of Russia’s political history examining how the Soviet past has been woven into the fabric of the modern Russian state a state which plays such a major assertive role in global affairs but which simultaneously remains an allusive secretive entity. With Russia’s increasing influence on the global stage and the controversies that often accompany this The Soviet Colossus is an invaluable resource for students of history politics and international relations. | The Soviet Colossus History and Aftermath

Memory Politics in Contemporary Russia Television Cinema and the State

Memory Politics in Contemporary Russia Television Cinema and the State

This book examines the societal dynamics of memory politics in Russia. Since Vladimir Putin became president the Russian central government has increasingly actively employed cultural memory to claim political legitimacy and discredit all forms of political opposition. The rhetorical use of the past has become a defining characteristic of Russian politics creating a historical foundation for the regime’s emphasis on a strong state and centralised leadership. Exploring memory politics this book analyses a wide range of actors from the central government and the Russian Orthodox Church to filmmaker and cultural heavyweight Nikita Mikhalkov and radical thinkers such as Aleksandr Dugin. In addition in view of the steady decline in media freedom since 2000 it critically examines the role of cinema and television in shaping and spreading these narratives. Thus this book aims to gain a better understanding of the various means through which the Russian government practices its memory politics (e. g. the role of state media) and on the other hand to sufficiently value the existence of alternative and critical voices and criticism that existing studies tend to overlook. Contributing to current debates in the field of memory studies and of current affairs in Russia and Eastern Europe this book will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of Russian Studies Cultural Memory Studies Nationalism and National Identity Political Communication Film Television and Media Studies. | Memory Politics in Contemporary Russia Television Cinema and the State

Collective Reflexology The Complete Edition

Collective Reflexology The Complete Edition

Vladimir Mikhailovitch Bekhterev was a pioneering Russian neurologist psychiatrist and psychologist. A highly esteemed rival of Ivan Pavlov his achievements in the areas of personality clinical psychology and political and social psychology were recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Publication of the complete text of Collective Reflexology brings to the English-speaking world this brilliant scientist's final theoretical statements on how reflexological principles which he had been developing over a quarter century can be extended far beyond analysis of the individual personality. Bekhterev's work grows out of his interest in group psychology and suggestion. This concept of the reflex is much broader than Pavlov's. It is applicable to every variety of life. Bekhterev compared his own analyses to those of other European thinkers such as Comte LeBon and Sorokin. Such analyses strained against the official Marxist-Leninist doctrines of the era. Bekhterev died in 1927 allegedly of poisoning by Stalin's henchman. As with many scientists during the Soviet era his legacy was suppressed. In the normal course of events his name would have been as well known as that of Freud Pavlov or more lately B. F. Skinner. This first publication of Bekhterev's great work in English fills a void in the fields of psychology sociology and the history of science. V. M. Bekhterev was director of the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg and founded there its Psychoneurological Institute. Among his many books are Suggestion: Its Role in Social Life (available from Transaction) and The Subject Matter and Goals of Social Psychology. Lloyd H. Strickland is professor of psychology at Carleton University. He is the author of numerous journal articles and editor of Directions in Soviet Social Psychology and Soviet and Western Perspectives in Social Psychology. Bekhterev (1857-1927) is a formidable figure and his work continues to deserve careful study. Canadian Psychology | Collective Reflexology The Complete Edition

Military and Society in 21st Century Europe A Comparative Analysis

Military and Society in 21st Century Europe A Comparative Analysis

This compendium on Europe's military situation is written by leading analysts of military studies representing every major nation of Europe. Also included are three overview chapters that set the tone for this volume. These chapters - Martin Shaw on the evolution of a common risk society Christopher Dandeker on the military in democratic societies and Wilfried von Bredow on the re-nationalization of military strategy - provide an introduction to the work. Although the Cold War is now two decades removed from Europe the challenges of transition to new defense systems and institutional structures still confront those who plan the future for military establishments. The country studies as well as the final analysis of the trends and probable future developments in Europe should be required reading throughout the national security structure for politicians and decision makers seeking to understand the dilemmas facing European militaries and the societies they defend. The chapters cover a wide range of nations. Jean Callaghan Christo Domoztov and Valery Ratchcev examine the Bulgarian armed forces after the 1997 elections and Marie Vlachova and Stefan Sarvas review civil-military relations in the Czech Republic. Janos Szabo studies the defense sector in Hungary. Adriana Stanescu sees Romania as a case of delayed modernization. Vladimir Rukavishnikov studies the military in post-communist Russia. Paul Klein and Jürgen Kuhlmann review the German armed forces in the context of a peace dividend. Bernard Boene and Didier Danet consider France and the post draft situation. Marina Nuciari and Giuseppe Caforio consider the Italian military in a democratic context. Jan van der Meulen and his colleagues look upon the Netherlands military as a case study in post-modernization. The final contribution summarizes lessons learned in assessing the contemporary civil-military complex. | Military and Society in 21st Century Europe A Comparative Analysis

The Actor and the Character Explorations in the Psychology of Transformative Acting

The Actor and the Character Explorations in the Psychology of Transformative Acting

Transformative acting remains the aspiration of many an emerging actor and constitutes the achievement of some of the most acclaimed performances of our age: Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln Meryl Streep as Mrs Thatcher Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter – the list is extensive and we all have our favourites. But what are the physical and psychological processes which enable actors to create characters so different from themselves? To understand this unique phenomenon Vladimir Mirodan provides both a historical overview of the evolution of notions of 'character' in Western theatre and a stunning contemporary analysis of the theoretical implications of transformative acting. The Actor and the Character: Surveys the main debates surrounding the concept of dramatic character and – contrary to recent trends – explains why transformative actors conceive their characters as ‘independent’ of their own personalities. Describes some important techniques used by actors to construct their characters by physical means: work on objects neutral and character masks Laban movement analysis Viewpoints etc. Examines the psychology behind transformative acting from the perspectives of both psychoanalysis and scientific psychology and based on recent developments in psychology asks whether transformation is not just acting folklore but may actually entail temporary changes to the brain structures of the actors. The Actor and the Character speaks not only to academics and students studying actor training and acting theory but contributes to current lively academic debates around character. This is a compelling and original exploration of the limits of acting theory and practice psychology and creative work in which Mirodan boldly re-examines some of the fundamental assumptions of actor training and some basic tenets of theatre practice to ask: What happens when one of us ‘becomes somebody else’? | The Actor and the Character Explorations in the Psychology of Transformative Acting

Ibbs and Tillett The Rise and Fall of a Musical Empire

Ibbs and Tillett The Rise and Fall of a Musical Empire

For the greater part of the twentieth century Ibbs and Tillett's concert agency was to the British music industry what Marks and Spencer is to the world of the department store. The roll-call of famous musicians on its books was unmatched and included such international stars as Clara Butt Fritz Kreisler Pablo Casals Sergei Rachmaninov Andr Segovia Kathleen Ferrier Myra Hess Jacqueline du Pr Clifford Curzon and Vladimir Ashkenazy to name but a handful. From 1906 the success of the company was due to the dedication of its founders Robert Leigh Ibbs and John Tillett. After their deaths the agency was run by the latter's wife Emmie who dubbed the 'Duchess of Wigmore Street' became one of the most formidable yet respected women in British music. The history of this unique institution and its owners is told here for the first time often through the fascinating letters that were exchanged between the artists themselves and the agency. It begins in the latter years of the 19th century with the concert and theatrical manager Narciso Vert for whom both Ibbs and Tillett worked until his death in 1905. The story then becomes a history of musical life in twentieth-century Britain illuminating aspects of the day-to-day management of concerts and festivals the lives and livelihoods of professional musicians as well as those who strove to join their ranks through audition or recommendation. The changing profile and particularly the onset and development of personal management of artists represented by Ibbs and Tillett and their reception in the press can be viewed as a barometer of musical taste. The demise of the agency in 1990 was indicative of just how much the world of British music had changed by the end of the century but despite its loss to the profession the legacy and influence of Ibbs and Tillett has remained a benchmark in today's highly competitive world of artist management and concert promotion many of whose principal operators began | Ibbs and Tillett The Rise and Fall of a Musical Empire
