Interactive Books Playful Media before Pop-Ups

Interactive Books Playful Media before Pop-Ups

Movable books are an innovative area of children’s publishing. Commonly equated with spectacular pop-ups movable books have a little-known history as interactive narrative media. Since they are hybrid artifacts consisting of words images and movable components they cross the borders between story toy and game. Interactive Books is a historical and comparative study of early movable books in relation to the children who engage with them. Jacqueline Reid-Walsh focuses on the period movable books became connected with children from the mid-17th to the early-19th centuries. In particular she examines turn-up books paper doll books and related hybrid experiments like toy theaters and paignion (or domestic play set) produced between 1650 and 1830. Despite being popular in their own time these artifacts are little known today. This study draws attention to a gap in our knowledge of children’s print culture by showing how these artifacts are important in their own right. Reid-Walsh combines archival research with children’s literature studies book history and juvenilia studies. By examining commercially produced and homemade examples she explores the interrelations among children interactive media and historical participatory culture. By drawing on both Enlightenment thinkers and contemporary digital media theorists Interactive Books enables us to think critically about children’s media texts paper and digital past and present. | Interactive Books Playful Media before Pop-Ups

Hidden Markets Public Policy and the Push to Privatize Education

Across the United States test publishers software companies and research firms continue to take advantage of the revenues made available by federal policies like the No Child Left Behind Act Race to the Top and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. In effect the education industry has assumed a central place in the day-to-day governance and administration of public schools—a previously hidden trend that has begun to be a ubiquitous component of public education. Drawing on analytic tools Hidden Markets examines specific domains that the education industry has had particular influence on—home schooling remedial instruction management consulting test development data management and staff development. With updated and new material added this second edition also highlights how technology and technology policy shape the conditions for teachers’ work the role of natural disasters as education market opportunities and the connection between racism and educational privatization. Additional updates include: Discussion of the role that policy elites play in allowing CEOS to regulate the student identity market Examination of the rise of online tutoring engineered in part by the No Child Left Behind Act New chapter that offers an updated road map for policymakers and activists concerned about the issues raised within the book | Hidden Markets Public Policy and the Push to Privatize Education

Neoliberalizing the University: Implications for American Democracy

Neoliberalizing the University: Implications for American Democracy

This collection brings together essays to address the crisis of Higher Education today focusing on its neoliberalization. Higher Education has been under assault for several decades as neoliberalism’s preference for market-based reforms sweeps across the US political economy. The recent push for neoliberalizing the academy comes at a time when it is ripe for change especially as it continues to confront growing financial pressure particularly in the public sector. The resulting cutbacks in public funding especially to state universities led to a variety of debilitating changes: increases in tuition growing student debt more students combining working and schooling declining graduation rates for minorities and low-income students increased reliance on adjuncts and temporary faculty and most recently growing interest in mass processing of students via online instruction. While many serious questions arise once we begin to examine what is happening in higher education today one particularly critical question concerns the implications of these changes on the relationship of education to as yet still unrealized democratic ideals. The 12 essays collected in this volume create important resources for students faculty citizens and policymakers who want to find ways to address contemporary threats to the higher education-democracy connection. This book was originally published as a special issue of New Political Science. | Neoliberalizing the University: Implications for American Democracy
