Regional Innovation Potential: The Case of the U.S. Machine Tool Industry

Regional Innovation Potential: The Case of the U.S. Machine Tool Industry

This title was first published in 2000: Steven Nivin analyzes a process vital to economic development - technological change. He furthers understanding of the processes driving innovation so that we may gain a deeper insight into the development of economies. Specifically the study explores the concept of innovation potential and the factors that result in variations in innovation potential across metropolitan areas using the US machine tool industry as a case study. To provide a comparison the same models are also estimated for the semiconductor industry. The findings indicate that urbanisation economies localization economies human capital universities and invention-derived knowledge are significant factors. The study assesses the contributions of three different skill levels of human capital; college-educated graduate degree and locally produced PhD’s in mechanical and electrical engineering. Only the graduate and PhD degree measures are found to be significant indicating the importance of having a highly skilled pool of labour within the region. The influences of the factors appear to be similar across industries with some slight differences. The transfer of knowledge through patents is also studied. It is found that the transmission of this knowledge is slower between different industries relative to the transmission within the same industry. | Regional Innovation Potential: The Case of the U. Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health

Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health

Physical activity is vital for good health. It has an established strong evidence base for its positive effects on functional capacity reducing the risk of many chronic diseases and promoting physical mental and social well-being. Furthermore these benefits are evident across a diversity of ages groups and populations. The need for these benefits in current societies means that exercise practitioners professional bodies institutions health authorities and governments require high quality evidence to establish appropriate exercise guidelines implementation strategies and effective exercise prescription at individual group and population levels. Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health is the first book to comprehensively present the issues associated with physical activity and health research and outline methods available along with considerations of the issues associated with these methods and working with particular groups. The book outlines the historical and scientific context of physical activity and health research before working through the full research process from generating literature reviews and devising a research proposal through selecting a research methodology and quantifying physical activity and outcome measures to disseminating findings. Including a full section on conducting research studies with special populations the book includes chapters on: Observational and cross-sectional studies; Interviews questionnaires and focus groups; Qualitative and quantitative research methods; Epidemiological research methods; Physical activity interventions and sedentary behaviour; and Working with children older people indigenous groups LGBTI groups and those with physical and mental health issues. Research Methods in Physical Activity and Health is the only book to approach the full range of physical activity research methods from a health perspective. It is essential reading for any undergraduate student conducting a research project or taking applied research modules in physical activity and health graduate students of epidemiology public health exercise psychology or exercise physiology with a physical activity and health focus or practicing researchers in the area.

Interpreting Basic Statistics A Workbook Based on Excerpts from Journal Articles

Interpreting Basic Statistics A Workbook Based on Excerpts from Journal Articles

Interpreting Basic Statistics gives students valuable practice in interpreting statistical reporting as it actually appears in peer-reviewed journals. Features of the ninth edition: • Covers a broad array of basic statistical concepts including topics drawn from the New Statistics • Up-to-date journal excerpts reflecting contemporary styles in statistical reporting • Strong emphasis on data visualization • Ancillary materials include data sets with almost two hours of accompanying tutorial videos which will help students and instructors apply lessons from the book to real-life scenarios About this book Each of the 63 exercises in the book contain three central components: 1) an introduction to a statistical concept 2) a brief excerpt from a published research article that uses the statistical concept and 3) a set of questions (with answers) that guides students into deeper learning about the concept. The questions on the journal excerpts promote learning by helping students • interpret information in tables and figures • perform simple calculations to further their interpretations • critique data-reporting techniques and • evaluate procedures used to collect data. The questions in each exercise are divided into two parts: (1) Factual Questions and (2) Questions for Discussion. The Factual Questions require careful reading for details while the discussion questions show that interpreting statistics is more than a mathematical exercise. These questions require students to apply good judgment as well as statistical reasoning in arriving at appropriate interpretations. Each exercise covers a limited number of topics making it easy to coordinate the exercises with lectures or a traditional statistics textbook. | Interpreting Basic Statistics A Workbook Based on Excerpts from Journal Articles

The Discretionary Economy A Normative Theory of Political Economy

The Discretionary Economy A Normative Theory of Political Economy

The Discretionary Economy argues that we do in fact control our own political and economic destinies. As a community we have discretion over policies that determine whether an economic process adequately provides for the necessities of life. We also determine who participates in normative public judgments and whether decisions distinguish between what is and what ought to be. Tool argues that we must continuously organize the institutional structures through which economic and political functions in the social process are carried on. We must exercise discretion by creating and modifying institutions that coordinate our behavior. To exercise discretion effectively requires that we employ distinctively American economic political and philosophical theory. In this volume the pivotal twentieth-century contributors to this encompassing theory of political economy are Thorstein Veblen John Dewey Clarence Ayres and R. Fagg Foster. This volume presents in detail their analytical and philosophical perspective on social change. A major purpose of this volume is to compare and contrast the American tradition with the traditions of capitalism Marxism and fascism demonstrating that the former can resolve compelling economic and political problems and the latter two cannot. This book explains how to identify and analyze social economic and political problems confronted in all communities and how to go about framing and implementing structural adjustments in the political economy. It will be of interest to students in non-traditional courses in political economy including institutional economics contemporary social problems economics and social policy methodology and contemporary economic thought. | The Discretionary Economy A Normative Theory of Political Economy
