Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Focusing on notions of diaspora identity and agency this book examines ethnicity in war-torn Sri Lanka. It highlights the historical development and negotiation of a new identification of Up-country Tamil amidst Sri Lanka’s violent ethnic politics. Over the past thirty years Up-country (Indian) Tamils generally have tried to secure their vision of living within a multi-ethnic Sri Lanka not within Tamil Eelam the separatist dream that ended with the civil war in 2009. Exploring Sri Lanka within the deep history of colonial-era South Asian plantation diasporas the book argues Up-country Tamils form a diaspora next-door to their ancestral homeland. It moves beyond simplistic Sinhala-Tamil binaries and shows how Sri Lanka’s ethnic troubles actually have more in common with similar battles that diasporic Indians have faced in Fiji and Trinidad than with Hindu-Muslim communalism in neighbouring India Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shedding new light on issues of agency citizenship displacement and re-placement within the formation of diasporic communities and identities this book demonstrates the ways that culture workers including politicians trade union leaders academics and NGO workers have facilitated the development of a new identity as Up-country Tamil. It is of interest to academics working in the fields of modern South Asia diaspora violence post-conflict nations religion and ethnicity. | Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Professional Issues in Work with Babies and Toddlers

Professional Issues in Work with Babies and Toddlers

Early childhood provision for babies and toddlers is in a critical phase. While governments are pushing for fast-paced expansion mainly to support the return of mothers to the labour market early childhood experts are deeply concerned about the quality of provision on offer for children up to age three. Research has consistently demonstrated that well-qualified educators are a crucial component towards ensuring a climate of sensitivity and responsiveness to individual children – and thus a central ingredient of high quality provision. However national policy choices regarding required professional education/training and required resources for supporting the well-being and learning opportunities of very young children are highly variable. The chapters in this book approach the topic of professional work with very young children in diverse ways employing varying theoretical frameworks research foci and research methodologies. They illustrate starkly divergent policy contexts in this case predominantly European with research located in Belgium France Finland Italy Sweden and the UK but also in South Africa and the USA. This book will be of interest to those conducting research into provision for infants and toddlers both at the micro-level of relationships and settings and at the macro-level of policy paradigms. Potential readers also include practitioners and prospective managers and leaders of early childhood centres as well as those offering initial and postgraduate early years teacher education and continuing professional development courses. This book was originally published as a special issue of Early Years. | Professional Issues in Work with Babies and Toddlers

Multilevel and Longitudinal Modeling with IBM SPSS

Multilevel and Longitudinal Modeling with IBM SPSS

Multilevel and Longitudinal Modeling with IBM SPSS Third Edition demonstrates how to use the multilevel and longitudinal modeling techniques available in IBM SPSS Versions 25-27. Annotated screenshots with all relevant output provide readers with a step-by-step understanding of each technique as they are shown how to navigate the program. Throughout diagnostic tools data management issues and related graphics are introduced. SPSS commands show the flow of the menu structure and how to facilitate model building while annotated syntax is also available for those who prefer this approach. Extended examples illustrating the logic of model development and evaluation are included throughout the book demonstrating the context and rationale of the research questions and the steps around which the analyses are structured. The book opens with the conceptual and methodological issues associated with multilevel and longitudinal modeling followed by a discussion of SPSS data management techniques that facilitate working with multilevel longitudinal or cross-classified data sets. The next few chapters introduce the basics of multilevel modeling developing a multilevel model extensions of the basic two-level model (e. g. three-level models models for binary and ordinal outcomes) and troubleshooting techniques for everyday-use programming and modeling problems along with potential solutions. Models for investigating individual and organizational change are next developed followed by models with multivariate outcomes and finally models with cross-classified and multiple membership data structures. The book concludes with thoughts about ways to expand on the various multilevel and longitudinal modeling techniques introduced and issues (e. g. missing data sample weights) to keep in mind in conducting multilevel analyses. Key features of the third edition: Thoroughly updated throughout to reflect IBM SPSS Versions 26-27. Introduction to fixed-effects regression for examining change over time where random-effects modeling may not be an optimal choice. Additional treatment of key topics specifically aligned with multilevel modeling (e. g. models with binary and ordinal outcomes). Expanded coverage of models with cross-classified and multiple membership data structures. Added discussion on model checking for improvement (e. g. examining residuals locating outliers). Further discussion of alternatives for dealing with missing data and the use of sample weights within multilevel data structures. Supported by online data sets the book's practical approach makes it an essential text for graduate-level courses on multilevel longitudinal latent variable modeling multivariate statistics or advanced quantitative techniques taught in departments of business education health psychology and sociology. The book will also prove appealing to researchers in these fields. The book is designed to provide an excellent supplement to Heck and Thomas's An Introduction to Multilevel Modeling Techniques Fourth Edition; however it can also be used with any multilevel or longitudinal modeling book or as a stand-alone text.

Necessary Conditions Teaching Secondary Math with Academic Safety Quality Tasks and Effective Facilitation

Necessary Conditions Teaching Secondary Math with Academic Safety Quality Tasks and Effective Facilitation

During his years working as an instructional coach for a national network of schools Geoff Krall had the chance to witness several inspirational moments when math class comes alive for middle or high school students - when it is challenging but also fun creative and interactive. In Necessary Conditions: Teaching Secondary Math with Academic Safety Quality Tasks and Effective Facilitation Krall documents the essential ingredients that produce these sorts of moments on a regular basis and for all students. They are Academic Safety Quality Tasks and Effective Facilitation. Academic Safety: Krall implements equitable classroom experiences that help fight stigmas associated with race and gender in schools. This allows students to feel socially and emotionally secure while nurturing their identities as mathematicians and increasing engagement during classroom discussions Quality Tasks: Teachers can adapt or create dynamic student-centered lessons that break down math into small manageable sections removing the frustrations felt by students who aren't considered math people Effective Facilitation: This book shows how to incorporate teaching moves and math routines designed for engagement persistence and interactivity. Teachers can allow students to explore safely while maintaining consistent classroom expectations. My work as a math instructional coach for a network of schools has afforded me the unique opportunity to visit exceptional teachers across the country documenting their tasks teaching moves and academically safe learning environments. You'll experience dispatches from these effective classrooms in which we'll observe how teachers attend to all three elements that make up the ecosystem. Event History Analysis With Stata 2nd Edition

Event History Analysis With Stata 2nd Edition

Nowadays event history analysis can draw on a well-established set of statistical tools for the description and causal analysis of event history data. The second edition of Event History Analysis with Stata provides an updated introduction to event history modeling along with many instructive Stata examples. Using the latest Stata software each of these practical examples develops a research question refers to useful substantive background information gives a short exposition of the underlying statistical concepts describes the organization of the input data and the application of the statistical Stata procedures and assists the reader in performing a substantive interpretation of the obtained results. Emphasising the strengths and limitations of event history model techniques in each field of application this book demonstrates that event history models provide a useful approach with which to uncover causal relationships or to map out a system of causal relations. It demonstrates how long-term processes can be studied and how changing context information on the micro meso and macro levels can be integrated easily into a dynamic analysis of longitudinal data. Event History Analysis with Stata is an invaluable resource for both novice students and researchers who need an introductory textbook and experienced researchers (from sociology economics political science pedagogy psychology or demography) who are looking for a practical handbook for their research. | Event History Analysis With Stata 2nd Edition

Routledge Handbook on Offenders with Special Needs

Routledge Handbook on Offenders with Special Needs

Current estimates indicate that approximately 2. 2 million people are incarcerated in federal state and local correctional facilities across the United States. There are another 5 million under community correctional supervision. Many of these individuals fall into the classification of special needs or special populations (e. g. women juveniles substance abusers mentally ill aging chronically or terminally ill offenders). Medical care and treatment costs represent the largest portion of correctional budgets and estimates suggest that these costs will continue to rise. In the community probation and parole officers are responsible for helping special needs offenders find appropriate treatment resources. Therefore it is important to understand the needs of these special populations and how to effectively care for and address their individual concerns. The Routledge Handbook of Offenders with Special Needs is an in-depth examination of offenders with special needs such as those who are learning-challenged developmentally disabled and mentally ill as well as substance abusers sex offenders women juveniles and chronically and terminally ill offenders. Areas that previously have been unexamined (or examined in a limited way) are explored. For example this text carefully examines the treatment of gay lesbian bisexual and transgender offenders and racial and gender disparities in health care delivery as well as pregnancy and parenthood behind bars homelessness and the incarceration of veterans and immigrants. In addition the book presents legal and management issues related to the treatment and rehabilitation of special populations in prisons/jails and the community including police-citizen interactions diversion through specialty courts obstacles and challenges related to reentry and reintegration and the need for the development and implementation of evidence-based criminal justice policies and practices. This is a key collection for students taking courses in prisons penology criminal justice criminology and related areas of study and an essential resource for academics and practitioners working with offenders with special needs. | Routledge Handbook on Offenders with Special Needs
