Unaccompanied Children in European Migration and Asylum Practices In Whose Best Interests?

Unaccompanied Children in European Migration and Asylum Practices In Whose Best Interests?

Unaccompanied minor migrants are underage migrants who for various reasons leave their country and are separated from their parents or legal/customary guardians. Some of them live entirely by themselves while others join their relatives or other adults in a foreign country. The concept of the best interests of a child is widely applied in international national legal documents and several guidelines and often pertains to unaccompanied minor migrants given that they are separated from parents who are not able to exercise their basic parental responsibilities. This book takes an in-depth look at the issues surrounding the best interests of the child in relation to unaccompanied minor migrants drawing on social legal and political sciences in order to understand children’s rights not only as a matter of positive law but mainly as a social practice depending on personal biographies community histories and social relations of power. The book tackles the interpretation of the rights of the child and the best interests principle in the case of unaccompanied minor migrants in Europe at political legal and practical levels. In its first part the book considers theoretical aspects of children’s rights and the best interests of the child in relation to unaccompanied minor migrants. Adopting a critical approach to the implementation of the Convention of Rights of a Child authors nevertheless confirm its relevance for protecting minor migrants’ rights in practice. Authors deconstruct power relations residing within the discourses of children’s rights and best interests demonstrating that these rights are constructed and decided upon by those in power who make decisions on behalf of those who do not possess authority. Authors further on explore normative and methodological aspects of Article 3 of the Convention on the Rights of a Child and its relevance for asylum and migration legislation. The second part of the book goes on to examine the actual legal framework related to unaccompanied minor migrants and implementation of children’s’ rights and their best interests in the reception protection asylum and return procedures. The case studies are based on from the empirical research on interviews with key experts and unaccompanied minor migrants in Austria France Slovenia and United Kingdom. Examining age assessment procedures unaccompanied minors’ survivals strategies and their everyday life in reception centres the contributors point to the discrepancy between the states’ obligations to take the best interest of the child into account when dealing with unaccompanied minor migrants and the lack of formal procedures of best interest determination in practice. The chapters expose weaknesses and failures of institutionalized systems in selected European countries in dealing with unaccompanied children and young people on the move. | Unaccompanied Children in European Migration and Asylum Practices In Whose Best Interests?

Chinese Foreign Relations with Weak Peripheral States Asymmetrical Economic Power and Insecurity

This book examines China’s relations with its weak peripheral states through the theoretical lens of structural power and structural violence. China’s foreign policy concepts toward its weak neighbouring states such as the ‘One Belt One Road’ strategy are premised on the assumption that economic exchange and a commitment to common development are the most effective means of ensuring stability on its borders. This book however argues that China’s overreliance on economic exchange as the basis for its bilateral relations contains inherently self-defeating qualities that have contributed and can further contribute to instability and insecurity within China’s periphery. Unequal economic exchange between China and its weak neighbours results in Chinese influence over the state’s domestic institutions what this book refers to as ‘structural power’. Chinese structural power in turn can undermine the state’s development contribute to social unrest and exacerbate existing state/society tensions—what this book refers to as ‘structural violence’. For China such outcomes lead to instability within its peripheral environment and raise its vulnerability to security threats stemming from nationalism separatism terrorism transnational organised crime and drug trafficking among others. This book explores the causality between China’s economically-reliant foreign policy and insecurity in its weak peripheral states and considers the implications for China’s security environment and foreign policy. This book will be of much interest to students of Chinese politics Asian security studies international political economy and IR in general. | Chinese Foreign Relations with Weak Peripheral States Asymmetrical Economic Power and Insecurity

Sexuality Intimacy Power Classic Edition

Sexuality Intimacy Power Classic Edition

This book offers Dimen’s classic take on psychosexuality drawing on relational theory feminism and postmodernism with a new foreword by Virginia Goldner and Velleda Ceccoli honouring the late Muriel Dimen and introducing a new audience to her profound legacy. For Dimen the shift from dualism to multiplicity that has reshaped a range of disciplines can also be brought to bear on our thinking about sexuality. She urges us to return to the open-mindedness hiding between the lines and buried in the footnotes of Freud’s writings and to replace the determinism into which his thought has hardened with more fluid notions of contingency paradox and thirdness. By unveiling the colloquy among psychoanalysis social theory and feminism Dimen challenges clinicians and academicians alike to rethink ideas about gender eroticism and perversion. She explores among other topics the relations between lust and libido; the limitations of Darwinian thought in theorizing homosexuality; the body as projective test; and the intimate tangle of love and hate between women. Generous clinical examples illustrate the ways in which a radical re-visioning of psychosexuality benefits therapists and patients alike. A brilliant example of contemporary psychoanalytic theory at its destabilizing best Sexuality Intimacy Power covers both clinical insights and theoretical rethinking that is invaluable for psychoanalysts psychotherapists and students of women’s gender and queer studies. | Sexuality Intimacy Power Classic Edition

Economics and Power A Marxist Critique

Economics and Power A Marxist Critique

In the economic debate power is defined and studied mainly as an interpersonal relation occurring out of perfect competition. This is a consequence of the combination of methodological individualism and the assumption of competition as a natural and everlasting coordinating mechanism operating without any sort of coercion. This methodology however is not adequate to analyze the forms of social coercion that characterize capitalism. Economics and Power criticizes the main theories of power developed in economic literature analyzing ultraliberal contractualism to radical political economics and ultimately suggesting a Marxist conception of power and coercion in capitalism. Palermo’s ontological argument is rooted in the philosophy of ‘critical realism’. This unique volume presents his main finding as being that the essential coercive mechanism of capitalism is competition. Capitalist power is not caused by a lack of competition but by the central role it plays in this mode of production. Following this the chapters reconstruct a Marxian conception of power where it is analyzed as a social relation and argues that perfect competition does in fact exist under the disguise of capitalist power. This book criticizes the construct of power and the underlying ideas surrounding perfect competition. This book is of interest to those who study political economy as well as economic theory and philosophy. | Economics and Power A Marxist Critique
