Pro refrigerio animae: Death and Memory in East-Central Europe Fourteenth-Nineteenth Centuries

Pro refrigerio animae: Death and Memory in East-Central Europe Fourteenth-Nineteenth Centuries

The historiography of death memory and testamentary practices is already abundant in Western Europe and a fairly large number of extra-European regions. For East-Central Europe there are many short studies in various regional languages mainly on anthropological/ethnographic aspects of the funeral rituals. This is an edited collection of studies by international scholars on the interlocking themes of attitudes and discourses on death commemorative practices and inheritance/testamentary strategies in the Balkans and East-Central Europe. These and other related themes are addressed comparatively and cover areas including Albania Bulgaria Romania Greece and areas of the former Yugoslavia Hungary and Austria from the perspective of imperial – Ottoman and Habsburg – legacies. Pro refrigerio animae: Death and Memory in East-Central Europe contributes to this subject by: linking anthropological/religious/cultural approaches to death to the legal/economic aspects of inheritance/commemoration; adding a still absent East-Central European and Habsburg Balkan and Ottoman dimension to the study of death memorialization and testaments; and presenting an abundant primary and secondary material in English translation and thus placing research on death and testaments by East-Central and Greek scholars within the international scholarly circuit. | Pro refrigerio animae: Death and Memory in East-Central Europe Fourteenth-Nineteenth Centuries

Musical Psychedelia Research at the Intersection of Music and Psychedelic Experience

Musical Psychedelia Research at the Intersection of Music and Psychedelic Experience

Psychedelic music is a fascinating yet under-researched field of study. This thought-provoking collection offers a broad introduction to the field of psychedelic music studies bringing together scholarly work on psychedelic music in genres like rock folk electronic dance music and pop. Through an expanded purview on psychedelic music an emerging trend in research the collection affords students and academics alike an introduction to a rich multi-faceted field. The contributing authors explore a range of different facets of musical psychedelia: its transgressive and transcendent aspects its foregrounding of timbre and texture the way it changes our perception of time its influence on “non-psychedelic” music key composition and production techniques that composers and musicians use in its creation how it is mediated by different places and spaces and the interplay between psychedelic visual and sonic aesthetics. This interdisciplinary work reveals both commonalities in musical psychedelic experiences and the contestation inherent in a field of study that juxtaposes music of different genres and eras with a variety of theoretical approaches and methodologies. In broadening the scope of psychedelic music research the collection not only makes for varied and absorbing reading on the subject level but also stimulates reflexive thought about interdisciplinary research. | Musical Psychedelia Research at the Intersection of Music and Psychedelic Experience

Love and Hate The Natural History of Behavior Patterns

Love and Hate The Natural History of Behavior Patterns

The author argues that there are specific turning points in evolution. Structures and behavioral patterns that evolved in the service of discrete functions sometimes allow for unforeseen new developments as a side effect. In retrospect they have proven to be pre-adaptations and serve as raw material for natural selection to work upon. Love and Hate was intended to complement Konrad Lorenz's book On Aggression by pointing out our motivations to provide nurturing and thus to counteract and correct the widespread but one-sided opinion that biologists always present nature as bloody in tooth and claw and intra-specific aggression as the prime mover of evolution. This simplistic image is nonetheless still with us all the more regrettably because it hampers discussion across scholarly disciplines. Eibl-Eibesfeldt argues that leaders in individualized groups are chosen for their pro-social abilities. Those who comfort group members in distress who are able to intervene in quarrels and to protect group members who are attacked those who share those who in brief show abilities to nurture are chosen by the others as leaders rather than those who use their abilities in competitive ways. Of course group leaders may need beyond their pro-social competence to be gifted as orators war leaders or healers. Issues of love and hate are social in origin and hence social in consequence. Life has emerged on this planet in a succession of new forms from the simplest algae to man-man the one being who reflects upon this creation who seeks to fashion it himself and who in the process may end by destroying it. It would indeed be grotesque if the question of the meaning of life were to be solved in this way. In language that is clear and accessible throughout arguing forcefully for the innate and preprogrammed dispositions of behavior in higher vertebrates including humans Eibl-Eibesfeldt steers a middle course in discussing the development of cultural and ethical norms while insisting on their matrix of biological origins. | Love and Hate The Natural History of Behavior Patterns
