Crisis in Sociology The Need for Darwin

Crisis in Sociology The Need for Darwin

Crisis in Sociology presents a compelling portrait of sociology's current troubles and proposes a controversial remedy. In the authors' view sociology's crisis has deep roots traceable to the over-ambitious sweep of the discipline's founders. Generations of sociologists have failed to focus effectively on the tasks necessary to build a social science. The authors see sociology's most disabling flaw in the failure to discover even a single general law or principle. This makes it impossible to systematically organize empirical observations guide inquiry by suggesting falsifiable hypotheses or form the core of a genuinely cumulative body of knowledge. Absent such a theoretical tool sociology can aspire to little more than an amorphous mass of hunches and disconnected facts. The condition engenders confusion and unproductive debate. It invites fragmentation and predation by applied social disciplines such as business administration criminal justice social work and urban studies. Even more dangerous are incursions by prestigious social sciences and by branches of evolutionary biology that constitute the frontier of the current revolution in behavioral science. Lopreato and Crippen argue that unless sociology takes into account central developments in evolutionary science it will not survive as an academic discipline. Crisis in Sociology argues that participation in the new social science exemplified by thriving new fields such as evolutionary psychology will help to build a vigorous scientific sociology. The authors analyze research on such subjects as sex roles social stratification and ethnic conflict showing how otherwise disconnected features of the sociological landscape can in fact contribute to a theoretically coherent and cumulative body of knowledge. | Crisis in Sociology The Need for Darwin

Defending NATO’s Northern Flank Power Projection and Military Operations

Defending NATO’s Northern Flank Power Projection and Military Operations

This book investigates several aspects of military power and security in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. NATO’s northern flank is a large maritime and littoral theatre where NATO directly borders Russia’s Northern Fleet Military Administrative Territory which is the location of some of Russia’s most potent air sea and land power capabilities. While military tensions on the northern flank had been relatively low for years the Ukraine war and increased great-power rivalry have altered that dynamic with heightened geopolitical tensions. This has increased the focus on military-strategic competition in this northernmost region of the alliance. This book presents new assessments of several aspects of military power and security in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. With an analysis of the security and political climate in the High North and of developments in Western military strategies capabilities doctrines and operational concepts the volume seeks to bring together an holistic understanding of the strategic challenges and opportunities facing the North Atlantic states and NATO in this dynamic area of responsibility for the alliance. In doing this the book provides key insights into the role of branch-specific and joint approaches to power projection and operations in the High North which also include selected country case studies. This book will be of much interest to students of NATO military studies security studies and International Relations. | Defending NATO’s Northern Flank Power Projection and Military Operations

Managing State Fragility Conflict Quantification and Power

Managing State Fragility Conflict Quantification and Power

This book examines the management of ‘state fragility’ and the practices and impacts of quantification over relations of power in international politics. With the further movement towards quantification and as technical and technological changes advance this book argues that certain important quantifying practices can be understood in terms of symbolic power which is more nuanced and subtle. The aim is that such an understanding can also open space for considering other instances of power that are blurred and nuanced in current international politics. By looking at how the merging of conflict and development issues in the fragile states agenda has been fed by and has fed the authority of ever-perfectible numbers the book offers an approach to address the difficulty in dealing with profound inequality without presuming domination. Instead the example of the g7+ group of self-labelled ‘fragile states’ and its tools indicate that quantification has reached a point of no return but it has done so through indirect practices of management and with the complicity so to say of those deemed least favoured by it. This shows that there is little chance that policy-makers and academics can escape dealing with numbers and there is much to be gained by understanding how complex and knowingly imperfect statistics become authoritative and widespread. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies International Political Sociology development studies and IR in general. | Managing State Fragility Conflict Quantification and Power

America's Strategy in World Politics The United States and the Balance of Power

America's Strategy in World Politics The United States and the Balance of Power

Less than a year after the United States entered the Second World War Nicholas Spykman wrote a book that placed the war effort in the broader context of the 1940s global balance of power. In America's Strategy in World Politics Spykman examined world politics from a realist geopolitical perspective. The United States he explained was fighting for its very survival as an independent country because the conquests of Germany and Japan raised the specter of our geopolitical encirclement by hostile forces controlling the power centers of Europe the Middle East and East Asia. Spykman warned that the United States could not safely retreat to a defensive position in the Western Hemisphere. Spykman looked beyond the immediate strategic requirements of the Second World War envisioning a postwar world in which the United States would help shape the global balance of power to meet its security needs. Even though Soviet Russia was our wartime ally Spykman recognized that a geopolitically unbalanced Soviet Union could threaten to upset the postwar balance of power and thereby endanger U. S. security. Spykman also foresaw the rise of China in postwar Asia and the likely need for the United States to ally itself with Japan to balance China's power. He also recognized that the Middle East would play a pivotal role in the postwar world. Spykman influenced American postwar statesmen and strategists. During the Cold War the U. S. sought to deny the Soviet Union political control of Western Europe the Middle East and East Asia. Spykman's geopolitical vision of U. S. security supported by a balanced Eurasian land mass coupled with his focus on power as the governing force in international relations makes America's Strategy in World Politics relevant to the twenty-first century. | America's Strategy in World Politics The United States and the Balance of Power

Questioning Planetary Illiberal Geographies Territory Space and Power

Questioning Planetary Illiberal Geographies Territory Space and Power

This book engages with current debates on ‘planetary urbanization’ and the nature of urban political theory but notably considers the implications of illiberalism on space territory and power. Such a focus is timely as illiberalism (across various settings and terrains) is producing and embedded in increasingly complex hybrid multi-scalar non-linear and globally networked flows. Through ordinary explorations drawn from diverse empirical case studies (China the United States India South Korea and Singapore) and via mixed methodologies the chapters in this volume seek to advance theory that moves beyond assumptions and certainties of what illiberalism is how and where it operates what it looks like and how it is experienced and embodied in different contexts offline and online. Chapters critically reflect upon themes like authoritarianism and the spatialization of illiberal power from the grassroots up to national governments and stress the need to move beyond normative understandings and portrayals of these terms and concepts. Presciently this volume looks back on recent history pre-dating the Covid-19 pandemic and some of the shocking political transformations now underway: as such the chapters offer a valuable lens to critically consider issues like public health policies surveillance and policing borders and bordering and activism and resistance. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Territory Politics Governance. | Questioning Planetary Illiberal Geographies Territory Space and Power

Power in Coalition Strategies for strong unions and social change

What makes them successful? What causes them to fail? Community organiser Amanda Tattersall examines successful coalitions between unions and community organisations in three countries: the public education coalition in Sydney Toronto's Ontario Health Coalition fighting to save universal health care and Chicago's living wage campaign run by the Grassroots Collaborative. She explores when and how coalitions can be a powerful strategy for social change organisational development and union renewal. Power in Coalition is essential reading for unionists community activists and anyone passionate about social change. 'A fascinating insight into the potential for coalitions to restore the balance of power between governments and the communities they are supposed to serve. ' - Julian Burnside AO QC'Amanda Tattersall shows that coalitions though hard work at times are the best means we have to rebalance power beat poverty and injustice and build a future that includes all of us especially the weakest. ' - Tim Costello AO CEO World Vision Australia'If unions are to maximise their influence in the 21st century they must build alliances with other organisations around economic social and ecological concerns affecting humanity. Power and Representation in Byzantium The Forging of the Macedonian Dynasty

Power and Representation in Byzantium The Forging of the Macedonian Dynasty

Throughout the history of Byzantium 65 emperors were dethroned and only 39 reigns ended peacefully. How might a usurper get away with murdering his predecessor? And how could a bloody act of regicide lead to one of the most glorious of all eras in Byzantium? These were questions that puzzled Michael Psellos as he looked back at Basil I’s assassination of Michael III and the origin of the Macedonian dynasty. Might the imperial art of Basil his sons and grandson help to explain how the dynasty overcame its violent beginnings and secured the loyalty of its subjects? It has long been recognised that the early Macedonian emperors were active propagandists but royal art has usually been viewed thematically over the span of centuries. Official iconography has been understood to project imperial power in ways which were impersonal and unchanging. This book instead adopts a chronological approach and considers how Basil justified his seizure of power and how his successors went on to articulate their own ideas about authority. It concludes that imperial art did at times reflect the personality of the emperor and the political demands of the moment such as the need for an heir the nature of court politics or the choice of successor. This innovative account of the forging of the Macedonian dynasty will appeal to those interested in how early medieval kings and emperors used art to create their own image to differentiate themselves from rivals and to extend the boundaries of their personal power. | Power and Representation in Byzantium The Forging of the Macedonian Dynasty
