Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

All people in no matter what culture must be able to place their music firmly in the context of the totality of their beliefs experiences and activities for without such ties music cannot exist. This means that there must be a body of theory connected with any music system - not necessarily a theory of the structure of music sound although that may be present as well but rather a theory of what music is what it does and how it is coordinated with the total environment both natural and cultural in which human beings move. The Flathead Indians of Western Montana (just over 26 000 in number as of the 2000 census) inhabit a reservation consisting of 632 516 acres of land in the Jocko and Flathead Valleys and the Camas Prairie country which lie roughly between Evaro and Kalispell Montana. The reservation is bounded on the east by the Mission Range on the west by the Cabinet National Forest on the south by the Lolo National Forest and on the north by an arbitrary line approximately bisecting Flathead Lake about twenty-four miles south of Kalispell. The area is one of the richest agricultural regions in Montana and fish and game are abundant. The Flathead are engaged in stocking timbering and various agricultural enterprises. For the Flathead the most important single fact about music and its relationship to the total world is its origin in the supernatural sphere. All true and proper songs particularly in the past owe their origin to a variety of contacts experienced by humans with beings which though a part of this world are superhuman and the source of both individual and tribal powers and skills. Thus a sharp distinction is drawn by the Flathead between what they call make-up and all other songs. Merriam's pioneering work in the relationship of ethnography and musicology remains a primary source in this field in anthropology. | Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

The author has visited the buildings interviewed the design teams and examined the findings of a sixty-question standardized user questionnaire. The book provides:• thirty case studies covering mixed-mode passive and environmentally sustainable commercial and institutional buildings • detailed insights into the principles underlying the design of sustainable buildings worldwide over several climatic zones and eleven countries together with clear explanations and illustrations of innovative design practice• a discussion of common issues and the lessons that may be learnt from a study of the performance of sustainable buildings in practice from the point of view of the people who use them. This important book will be of great benefit to architects and engineers facility managers of commercial and institutional buildings as well as developers and researchers academics and students in these fields. | Sustainable Buildings in Practice What the Users Think

Controlled Drinking

Controlled Drinking

Originally published in 1981 and revised in 1983 Controlled Drinking was the first scholarly review of the literature on a controversial but increasingly practiced approach to the treatment of alcoholism. Nick Heather and Ian Robertson analyse all the pertinent questions that controlled drinking raises starting with the need to examine the ‘disease conception’ of alcoholism and ‘total abstinence’ treatment. They look at the evidence indicating that some people previously diagnosed as alcoholics are able to return to normal controlled patterns of drinking and discuss therapies where controlled drinking is the treatment goal fully reviewing the evidence for their success and failure. Concluding with a discussion of the theoretical and policy implications of controlled drinking the authors recommend that the disease view of alcoholism be finally abandoned. For the revised paperback edition as well as correcting and updating the text and references the authors included an important postscript on the charges of falsification of evidence and their subsequent refutation which made up the Sobell affair. The wealth of other material presented in Controlled Drinking supports the authors’ conclusions even if the Sobells’ work were ignored. However this revised edition was made more useful for student and professional readers by the postscript’s discussion of the controversy surrounding the most widely known and quoted controlled drinking trial at the time.

COVID-19 and Climate Change in BRICS Nations Beyond the Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030

COVID-19 and Climate Change in BRICS Nations Beyond the Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030

This book provides a quantitative and qualitative overview of the overall impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the capacity of Brazil Russia India China and South Africa (BRICS countries) to reshape global climate governance and explore areas for mutual cooperation. BRICS countries account for nearly 40% of the total world population and are thus intrinsic to the global efforts and results for Agenda 2030 the Sustainable Development Goals the Paris Agreement and beyond. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic does not at first appear to be directly related to BRICS’ policies to address climate change but it has influenced the pace and nature of climate action due to the loss of human and financial capital. This book examines this correlation and raises awareness of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impacts and potential solutions on BRICS’ climate strategies. Drawing on case studies from each country the authors use examples from urban governance energy transition strategy foreign investment and more to illustrate how COVID-19 has negatively or positively impacted climate data and draw wider conclusions about the long-term climate policies that may be implemented. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change environmental politics and governance and global development studies. | COVID-19 and Climate Change in BRICS Nations Beyond the Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030

Enjoyment of Laughter

Enjoyment of Laughter

Humor at its best is a somewhat fluid and transitory element but most books about it are illustrated with hardened old jokes from the comic papers or classic witticisms jerked out of their context. Max Eastman in this work avoids this catastrophe by quoting mainly from contemporary American humor. This is not an anthology in that selections have been made with a view to making a point rather than covering the field. The purpose of Eastman's fabled work is to make the reader laugh. Since his early school days it has seemed to him that textbooks are wrongly written in that they are conducted in a way which ignores the natural operation of the mind. As a result the opinion is universal and under the circumstances a fact that in order to learn anything you have to study. Since this introduction to humor is itself near to writing a textbook Eastman uses the very text he constructs to illustrate the manner in which textbooks should be written. Examination and classification of the kinds of humorous experience upon the basis of a theory is a science. As such this work offers a fair chance to illustrate a method of instruction. However the distinction between a good joke and a bad one will not prevent the reader from making bad jokes nor enable one to make good ones. There is an artistic and playful element that simply cannot be taught. Enjoyment of Laughter presents a total view of the science of laughter and draws upon some of the great American humorists to do so.

The Administration of Health Systems Comparative Perspectives

The Administration of Health Systems Comparative Perspectives

In the late 1960s American society entered a period of rapidly accelerating social change. Certainty that U. S. vast scientific and technical capability would be able to find solutions to all problems began to turn to concern as organizational efforts were unable to keep pace with new developments in a variety of areas. The health field with its focus on the well-being of individuals felt the impact of these changes particularly strongly. Medicines became more focused on isolated health practices as the patient's needs were attended to within groups of unrelated biological systems. The emerging thought represented in this collection pushes for the perception of health as a right rather than as something to be earned. It argues that deprivation of life-saving and life-fulfilling opportunities to any populations should not be tolerated. The editors also demand more awareness of the implications of isolated health activities and make the case for a comprehensive total health care system. Health is no longer just a biological function; quality of life is also a concern. First published in 1971 by administrators of health agencies teachers and health personnel this work presents perspectives on problems and interpretations of forces and issues that are of continuing importance to health administrators. The emphasis on the need to focus on the whole patient rather than just their illness and on providing them with a good life not just a disease free one is still as valid today as it was when this volume was initially published. | The Administration of Health Systems Comparative Perspectives

Bitter Waters Life And Work In Stalin's Russia

Bitter Waters Life And Work In Stalin's Russia

One dusty summer day in 1935 a young writer named Gennady Andreev-Khomiakov was released from the Siberian labor camp where he had spent the last eight years of his life. His total assets amounted to 25 rubles a loaf of bread five dried herrings and the papers identifying him as a convicted ?enemy of the people. ? From this hard-pressed beginning Andreev-Khomiakov would eventually work his way into a series of jobs that would allow him to travel and see more of ordinary life and work in the Soviet Union of the 1930s than most of his fellow Soviet citizens would ever have dreamed possible. Capitalizing on this rare opportunity Bitter Waters is Andreev-Khomiakov's eyewitness account of those tumultuous years a time when titanic forces were shaping the course of Russian history. Later to become a successful writer and editor in the Russiangr ommunity in the 1950s and 1960s Andreev-Khomiakov brilliantly uses this memoir to explore many aspects of Stalinist society. Forced collectivization Five Year Plans purges and the questionable achievements of ?shock worker brigades? are only part of this story. Andreev-Khomiakov exposes the Soviet economy as little more than a web of corruption a system that largely functioned through bribery barter and brute force?and that fell into temporary chaos when the German army suddenly invaded in 1941. Bitter Waters may be most valuable for what it reveals about Russian society during the tumultuous 1930s. From remote provincial centers and rural areas to the best and worst of Moscow and Leningrad Andreev-Khomiakov's series of deftly drawn sketches of people places and events provide a unique window on the hard daily lives of the people who built Stalin's Soviet Union. | Bitter Waters Life And Work In Stalin's Russia

Political Economy of Agricultural Development in India

Political Economy of Agricultural Development in India

The book covers Indian agricultural development from the colonial to the present period. It examines how ruling class political ideology determined the agricultural policies from colonial rule. It considers both quantitative and qualitative aspects in all periods: colonial period to pre-green revolution phase post-green revolution phase (early and late stages) and post-globalisation phase after 1991. India has achieved the ability to maintain food security through enough food grain buffer stocks to meet the enormous public distribution system. But with India’s entry into WTO in 1994 euphoria has been created among all types of farmers to adopt commercial crops like cotton cost-intensive inputs. Even food grain crops are grown through use of costly irrigation and chemicalised inputs. But they lacked remunerative prices and so farmers began to commit suicides which crossed 3. 5 lakh. Government of India attributed this agrarian crisis to the technology fatigue and gave scope for second green revolution (GR-II). GR-I was achieved by public sector enterprise whereas the GR-II as gene revolution is a result of private sector enterprise/MNCs. There is fear that opening up of the sector may lead to handover of the family farms to big agri-multinationals. GOI’s proposal to double farmers’ income by 2022 is feasible only when the problems being faced by small marginal and tenant farmers are addressed in agricultural marketing credit and extension services. Now it is time to go for suitable forms of cooperative/collective agriculture as 85 percent of total cultivators are the small and marginal farmers. This book is co-published with Aakar Books New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the print versions of this book in India Pakistan Nepal Bhutan Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. | Political Economy of Agricultural Development in India
