Ubuntu Virtue Theory and Moral Character Formation Critically Reconstructing Ubuntu for the African Educational Context

Ubuntu Virtue Theory and Moral Character Formation Critically Reconstructing Ubuntu for the African Educational Context

This book investigates the ubuntu theory-based conception of virtue and moral character formation in the northern western and eastern regions of Africa suggesting a critical reconstruction of ubuntu by conceptualising the four different forms of practices in moral character formation. Arguing for the critical reconstruction of ubuntu virtue theory as more nuanced than simply the standard ubuntu normative virtue theories (which give priority to the community as the sole locus for understanding virtues and character formation in Africa) the book builds a comprehensive model of virtue and moral character formation that draws insights from the reconstructed notion of ubuntu and other theories within and beyond the African thought. Chapters feature experience from across Africa including Malawi Zambia Zimbabwe Uganda Kenya and South Africa and centre on topics such as traditional cultural views and practices political systems in various nations neoliberalist thought and primary secondary and tertiary education systems in Africa and further afield. This is a valuable resource for scholars academics and postgraduate students working in the fields of moral and values education philosophy of education and the theory of education more broadly. Those also interested in educational psychology may also find the volume of interest. | Ubuntu Virtue Theory and Moral Character Formation Critically Reconstructing Ubuntu for the African Educational Context

New Perspectives on Arson and Firesetting The Human-Fire Relationship

New Perspectives on Arson and Firesetting The Human-Fire Relationship

New Perspectives on Arson and Firesetting: The Human-Fire Relationship is the first forensic text to move away from a sole focus on anti-social firesetting. The author presents a broader investigation of the role of fire in human life with a view to informing research and practice. The author combines her experience as a practitioner forensic psychologist with her own research to consider the practical application of an alternative perspective. This includes a particular focus on the assessment and treatment of fire setters and a call for a socially informed approach to prevention. The forensic scope applied focus and emphasis on the importance of interdisciplinary research and practice makes New Perspectives on Arson and Firesetting essential reading for students in fields such as anthropology sociology criminology and psychology as well as interdisciplinary scholars forensic practitioners and allied professionals. The author is donating her royalties in full to Pancreatic Cancer UK. | New Perspectives on Arson and Firesetting The Human-Fire Relationship

New Directions in Japan’s Security Non-U.S. Centric Evolution

New Directions in Japan’s Security Non-U.S. Centric Evolution

While the US-Japan alliance has strengthened since the end of the Cold War Japan has almost unnoticed been building security ties with other partners in the process reducing the centrality of the US in Japan’s security. This book explains why this is happening. Japan pursued security isolationism during the Cold War but the US was the exception. Japan hosted US bases and held joint military exercises even while shunning contacts with other militaries. Japan also made an exception to its weapons export ban to allow exports to the US. Yet since the end of the Cold War Japan’s security has undergone a quiet transformation moving away from a singular focus on the US as its sole security partner. Tokyo has begun diversifying its security ties. This book traces and explains this diversification. The country has initiated security dialogues with Asian neighbors assumed a leadership role in promoting regional multilateral security cooperation and begun building bilateral security ties with a range of partners from Australia and India to the European Union. Japan has even lifted its ban on weapons exports and co-development with non-US partners. This edited volume explores this trend of decreasing US centrality alongside the continued and perhaps even growing security (inter) dependence with the US. New Directions in Japan’s Security is an essential resource for scholars focused on Japan’s national security. It will also interest on a wider basis those wishing to understand why Japan is developing non-American directions in its security strategy. | New Directions in Japan’s Security Non-U. S.
