Manual of Forensic Taphonomy

Manual of Forensic Taphonomy

The main goals in any forensic skeletal analysis are to answer who is the person represented (individualization) how that person died (trauma/pathology) and when that person died (the postmortem interval or PMI). The analyses necessary to generate the biological profile include the determination of human nonhuman or nonosseous origin the minimum number of individuals represented age at death sex stature ancestry perimortem trauma antemortem trauma osseous pathology odontology and taphonomic effects—the postmortem modifications to a set of remains. The Manual of Forensic Taphonomy Second Edition covers the fundamental principles of these postmortem changes encountered during case analysis. Taphonomic processes can be highly destructive and subtract information from bones regarding their utility in determining other aspects of the biological profile but they also can add information regarding the entire postmortem history of the remains and the relative timing of those effects. The taphonomic analyses outlined provide guidance on how to separate natural agencies from human-caused trauma. These analyses are also performed in conjunction with the field processing of recovery scenes and the interpretation of the site formation and their postdepositional history. The individual chapters categorize these alterations to skeletal remains illustrate and explain their significance and demonstrate differential diagnosis among them. Such observations may then be combined into higher-order patterns to aid forensic investigators in determining what happened to those remains in the interval from death to analysis including the environment(s) in which the remains were deposited including buried terrestrial surface marine freshwater or cultural contexts. Features Provides nearly 300 full-color illustrations of both common and rare taphonomic effects to bones derived from actual forensic cases • Presents new research including experimentation on recovery rates during surface search timing of marine alterations trophy skulls taphonomic laboratory and field methods laws regarding the relative timing of taphonomic effects reptile taphonomy human decomposition and microscopic alterations by invertebrates to bones • Explains and illustrates common taphonomic effects and clarifies standard terminology for uniformity and usage within in the field While the book is primarily focused upon large vertebrate and specifically human skeletal remains it effectively synthesizes data from human ethological geological/paleontological paleoanthropological archaeological artifactual and zooarchaeological studies. Since these taphonomic processes affect other vertebrates in similar manners The Manual of Forensic Taphonomy Second Edition will be invaluable to a broad set of forensic and investigative disciplines.

Swarm Intelligence From Social Bacteria to Humans

Swarm Intelligence From Social Bacteria to Humans

The notion of swarm intelligence was introduced for describing decentralized and self-organized behaviors of groups of animals. Then this idea was extrapolated to design groups of robots which interact locally to cumulate a collective reaction. Some natural examples of swarms are as follows: ant colonies bee colonies fish schooling bird flocking horse herding bacterial colonies multinucleated giant amoebae Physarum polycephalum etc. In all these examples individual agents behave locally with an emergence of their common effect. An intelligent behavior of swarm individuals is explained by the following biological reactions to attractants and repellents. Attractants are biologically active things such as food pieces or sex pheromones which attract individuals of swarm. Repellents are biologically active things such as predators which repel individuals of swarm. As a consequence attractants and repellents stimulate the directed movement of swarms towards and away from the stimulus respectively. It is worth noting that a group of people such as pedestrians follow some swarm patterns of flocking or schooling. For instance humans prefer to avoid a person considered by them as a possible predator and if a substantial part of the group in the situation of escape panic (not less than 5%) changes the direction then the rest follows the new direction too. Some swarm patterns are observed among human beings under the conditions of their addictive behavior such as the behavior of alcoholics or gamers. The methodological framework of studying swarm intelligence is represented by unconventional computing robotics and cognitive science. In this book we aim to analyze new methodologies involved in studying swarm intelligence. We are going to bring together computer scientists and cognitive scientists dealing with swarm patterns from social bacteria to human beings. This book considers different models of simulating controlling and predicting the swarm behavior of different species from social bacteria to humans. | Swarm Intelligence From Social Bacteria to Humans

Crime Scene Staging Dynamics in Homicide Cases

Crime Scene Staging Dynamics in Homicide Cases

Individuals who perpetrate murder sometimes pose or reposition victims weapons and evidence to make it look like events happened in a different way than what actually transpired. Until now there has been scarce literature published on crime scene staging. Crime Scene Staging Dynamics in Homicide Cases is the first book to look at this practice providing a methodology of identifying analyzing synthesizing and evaluating the evidence of each case by learning to marry the physical evidence to the behavioral evidence. The book begins with the history of crime scene staging and includes many case examples that illustrate how when and why criminals stage crime scenes. The characteristics of crime scene stagers and their victims are examined along with the intent of crime scene staging and dynamics of the staged crime scene. In addition coverage of forensic victimology explores the reasons why a person might become a victim and why based on this staging may be performed. The book emphasizes the importance of recognizing behavioral red flags which are often present in staged crime scenes. These indicators can be commonly overlooked by investigators when they focus only on the physical evidence of a crime scene. Early detection crime scene analysis and crime scene reconstruction of the staged crime scene are each supported—by the full body of literature and latest published research on staging as well as by proven real-world field-based methodologies. The book identifies and describes various types of crime scene staging behavioral patterns presenting the complications and challenges that crime scene staging presents for investigators. This book will be an invaluable tool for forensic scientists investigators homicide detectives and law enforcement to understand all aspects of crime scene staging dynamics.
