Fermented Foods Part I Biochemistry and Biotechnology

Fermented Foods Part I Biochemistry and Biotechnology

Traditional fermented foods are not only the staple food for most of developing countries but also the key healthy food for developed countries. As the healthy functions of these foods are gradually discovered more high throughput biotechnologies are being used to promote the fermented food industries. As a result the microorganisms process biochemistry manufacturing and down-streaming processing as well as the bioactive metabolites released by the fermenting organisms and above all the healthy functions of these foods were extensively researched. The application and progress of biotechnology and biochemistry of traditional fermented food systems are different from each other as the microorganisms and the food matrices vary widely. Part I (Biochemistry and Biotechnology) of this book (Fermented Foods) discusses the general aspects of biochemistry and biotechnological application of fermented foods involving acetic acid bacteria lactic acid bacteria ethanolic yeasts and fungi in accelerating the many and variable functional factors in the fermented foods as well as metagenomics of fermented foods. The detailed technological interventions involved in different categories of fermented foods such as fermented cereals (bread and sourdough) fermented milk products (yogurt cheese) fermented sausages fermented vegetables (kimchi sauerkraut) fermented legumes (tempeh natto) and coffee and cocoa fermentations and fermented beverages (animal- and plant-based) with their potential and actual health benefits are discussed in Part II (Fermented Foods: Technological Interventions). | Fermented Foods Part I Biochemistry and Biotechnology

Mycotoxins in Food and Beverages Innovations and Advances Part I

Mycotoxins in Food and Beverages Innovations and Advances Part I

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungi in a wide range of foods (cereals peanut tree nuts dried fruits coffee cocoa grapes spices…) both in the field and after harvest particularly during storage. They can also be found in processed foods of plant origin or by transfer in food products of animal (milk eggs meat and offal). Mycotoxins are of major concern since they can cause acute or chronic intoxications in both humans and animals which are sometimes fatal. Many countries particularly in Europe have set maximum acceptable levels for mycotoxins in food and feed. The book reviews the latest literature and innovations on important aspects of mycotoxins e. g. mycotoxin producing fungi and the related ecosystems mycotoxin occurrence toxicity analysis and management. Quantitative estimations of impacts of climate change on mycotoxin occurrence have been made recently using predictive modelling. There is also a growing interest in the occurrence and toxicity of multiple mycotoxins in food and feed including emerging or modified forms of mycotoxins. Innovative tools were also developed to detect and quantify toxinogenic fungi and their toxins. In order to reduce the use of chemicals that are harmful to the environment and health of consumers alternative methods of prevention and decontamination of mycotoxins were tested in pre- and post-harvest using microorganisms natural substances or radiation treatments. | Mycotoxins in Food and Beverages Innovations and Advances Part I

High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

As one of the pioneers of Piezoelectric Actuators I have contributed to the commercialization of various products for over 45 years including million-selling devices micro-ultrasonic motors for smart-phone camera modules by Samsung Electromechanics piezoelectric transformers for backlight inverters by Apple laptops multilayer PZT actuators for diesel injection valves by Denso Corporation and piezoelectric energy harvesting modules for Programable Air-Burst Munition by the US Army. During the development period for piezoelectric actuators and transformers I found that the bottleneck for device miniaturization was heat generation under a high-power drive condition. Thus in parallel to the piezo-actuator developments I have been developing various high-power density piezo-ceramic materials with the loss mechanism clarification. Hence I considered that it was time to organize a textbook based on the previous studies including my materials development philosophy to stimulate younger generations to reach to the energy density of up to 100 W/cm3 in the future. Increasing efficiency and saving energy and space (compactness) are one of the important approaches in this 21st-century sustainable society. High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisims introduces the theoretical background of piezoelectrics electromechanical phenomenology loss mechanisms practical materials device designs drive and characterization techniques and typical applications and looks forward to the future perspectives in this field. This book is NOT an overall review of this area but it focuses on important and basic ideas under my development philosophy to understand how to design and develop high-power piezoelectric materials and devices. This textbook is designed for self-learning by the reader aided by the availability of: • Chapter Essentials – Summary for quick memory recovery • Check Points – Answers are provided in the Appendix • Example Problems – To enhance the reader’s understanding with full detailed solutions • Chapter Problems – For the final exam or further consideration | High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

Building a Programmable Logic Controller with a PIC16F648A Microcontroller

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are extensively used in industry to perform automation tasks with manufacturers offering a variety of PLCs that differ in functions program memories and the number of inputs/outputs (I/O). Not surprisingly the design and implementation of these PLCs have long been a secret of manufacturers. Unveiling the mysteries of PLC technology Building a Programmable Logic Controller with PIC16F648A Microcontroller explains how to design and use a PIC16F648A-microcontroller-based PLC. The author first described a microcontroller-based implementation of a PLC in a series of articles published in Electronics World magazine between 2008 and 2010. This book is based on an improved version of the project including:Updates to the hardware configuration with a smaller CPU board and two I/O extension boards that now support 16 inputs and 16 outputs instead of 8An increased clock frequency of 20 MHzImprovements to several macrosFlowcharts to help you understand the macros (functions)In this book the author provides detailed explanations of hardware and software structures. He also describes PIC Assembly macros for all basic PLC functions which are illustrated with numerous examples and flowcharts. An accompanying downloadable resources contain source files (. ASM) and object files (. HEX) for all of the examples in the book. It also supplies printed circuit board (PCB) (Gerber and . pdf) files so that you can have the CPU board and I/O extension boards produced by a PCB manufacturer or produce your own boards. Making PLCs more easily accessible this unique book is written for advanced students practicing engineers and hobbyists who want to learn how to build their own microcontroller-based PLC. Electrostatic Discharge Protection Advances and Applications

Electrostatic Discharge Protection Advances and Applications

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is one of the most prevalent threats to electronic components. In an ESD event a finite amount of charge is transferred from one object (i. e. human body) to another (i. e. microchip). This process can result in a very high current passing through the microchip within a very short period of time. Thus more than 35 percent of single-event chip damages can be attributed to ESD events and designing ESD structures to protect integrated circuits against the ESD stresses is a high priority in the semiconductor industry. Electrostatic Discharge Protection: Advances and Applications delivers timely coverage of component- and system-level ESD protection for semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. Bringing together contributions from internationally respected researchers and engineers with expertise in ESD design optimization modeling simulation and characterization this book bridges the gap between theory and practice to offer valuable insight into the state of the art of ESD protection. Amply illustrated with tables figures and case studies the text: Instills a deeper understanding of ESD events and ESD protection design principles Examines vital processes including Si CMOS Si BCD Si SOI and GaN technologies Addresses important aspects pertinent to the modeling and simulation of ESD protection solutions Electrostatic Discharge Protection: Advances and Applications provides a single source for cutting-edge information vital to the research and development of effective robust ESD protection solutions for semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. | Electrostatic Discharge Protection Advances and Applications

Ecology of Fire-Dependent Ecosystems Wildland Fire Science Policy and Management

Ecology of Fire-Dependent Ecosystems Wildland Fire Science Policy and Management

Ecology of Fire-Dependent Ecosystems is brimming with intriguing ecological stories of how life has evolved with and diversified within the varied fire regimes that are experienced on earth. Moreover the book places itself as a communication between students fire scientists and fire fighters and each of these groups will find some familiar ground and some challenging aspects in this text: something which ultimately will help to bring us closer together and enrich our different approaches to understanding and managing our changing planet. Sally Archibald Professor University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg South Africa Most textbooks are as dry as kindling and about as much fun to sink your teeth into. This is not that kind of textbook. Devan Allen McGranahan and Carissa L. Wonkka have taken a complex topic and somehow managed to synthesize it into a comprehensive yet digestible form. This is a book you can read cover to cover – I know I did it. As a result I took an enlightening journey through the history and fundamentals of fire and its role in the natural and human world ending with a thoughtful review of the evolving relationship between humans and wildland fire. Chris Helzer Nebraska Director of Science The Nature Conservancy and author of The Prairie Ecologist blog Ecology of Fire-Dependent Ecosystems: Wildland Fire Science Policy and Management is intended for use in upper-level courses in fire ecology and wildland fire management and as a reference for researchers managers and other professionals involved with wildland fire science practice and policy. The book helps guide students and scientists to design and conduct robust wildland fire research projects and critically interpret and apply fire science in any management education or policy situation. It emphasizes variability in wildland fire as an ecological regime and provides tools for students researchers and managers to assess and connect fire environment and fire behaviour to fire effects. Fire has not only shaped social and ecological communities but pushed ecosystems beyond previous boundaries yet understanding the nature and effects of fire as an ecological disturbance has been slow hampered by the complexity of the dynamic interactions between vegetation and climate and the fear of the destruction fire can bring. This book will help those who study manage and use wildland fire to develop new answers and novel solutions based on an understanding of how fire functions in natural and social environments. It reviews literature synthesizes concepts and identifies research gaps and policy needs. The text also explores the interaction of fire and human culture demonstrating how fire policy can be made adaptable to cultural and socio-ecological objectives. | Ecology of Fire-Dependent Ecosystems Wildland Fire Science Policy and Management
