Design of Prestressed Concrete to Eurocode 2

Design of Prestressed Concrete to Eurocode 2

The design of structures in general and prestressed concrete structures in particular requires considerably more information than is contained in building codes. A sound understanding of structural behaviour at all stages of loading is essential. This textbook presents a detailed description and explanation of the behaviour of prestressed concrete members and structures both at service loads and at ultimate loads and in doing so provide a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to structural design. Much of the text is based on first principles and relies only on the principles of mechanics and the properties of concrete and steel with numerous worked examples. However where the design requirements are code specific this book refers to the provisions of Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures and where possible the notation is the same as in Eurocode 2. A parallel volume is written to the Australian Standard for Concrete Structures AS3600-2009. The text runs from an introduction to the fundamentals to in-depth treatments of more advanced topics in modern prestressed concrete structures. It suits senior undergraduate and graduate students and also practising engineers who want comprehensive introduction to the design of prestressed concrete structures. It retains the clear and concise explanations and the easy-to-read style of the first edition but the content has been extensively re-organised and considerably expanded and updated. New chapters cover design procedures actions and loads; prestressing systems and construction requirements; connections and detailing; and design concepts for prestressed concrete bridges. The topic of serviceability is developed extensively throughout. All the authors have been researching and teaching the behaviour and design of prestressed concrete structures for over thirty-five years and the proposed new edition of the book reflects this wealth of experience. The work has also gained much from Professor Gilbert active and long-time involvement in the development of standards for concrete buildings and concrete bridges. | Design of Prestressed Concrete to Eurocode 2

Biological Systematics History and Theory

Biological Systematics History and Theory

This volume reviews the historical roots and theoretical foundations of biological systematics in an approachable text. The author outlines the structure and main tasks of systematics. Conceptual history is characterized as a succession of scientific revolutions. The philosophical foundations of systematic research are briefly reviewed as well as the structure and content of taxonomic theories. Most important research programs in systematics are outlined. The book includes analysis of the principal problematic issues as scientific puzzles in systematics. This volume is intended for professional taxonomists biologists of various specialties students as well as all those interested in the history and theory of biology and natural sciences. Key Features Considers the conceptual history of systematics as the framework of evolutionary epistemology Builds a hierarchically organized quasi-axiomatic system of taxonomic theory Contends that more reductionist taxonomic concepts are less objective Supports taxonomic pluralism by non-classic philosophy of science as a normal condition of systematics Documents that taxonomic puzzles result from conflict between monistic and pluralistic attitudes Related Titles de Queiroz K. et al. eds. Today's Curiosity is Tomorrow's Cure The Case for Basic Biomedical Research

Today's Curiosity is Tomorrow's Cure The Case for Basic Biomedical Research

Basic curiosity-driven biomedical science has delivered many of today’s most significant medical advances. This book provides clearly explained examples from recent biomedical history and includes convincing arguments for sustaining a robust portfolio of basic research. Intended as an engaging read which will delight undergraduate and graduate students as well as scientific researchers it is full-throated advocacy of basic science. Illustrations and examples include the discoveries of penicillin and insulin and the breakthrough elucidation of the genetic code. Providing both compelling rationale in support of basic science and a fascinating look through the history of modern biomedical research this book highlights with stirring examples why basic biomedical research is so important and how so many key advances in medicine are derived from basic research. The book also offers a rationale for scientific inquiry and a broader understanding of the history of modern biomedical research missing from today’s classrooms. Key Features 1) Provides clear explanations of great scientific discoveries 2) Illustrates connections between basic research findings and modern medicine 3) Includes compelling graphics/diagrams/illustrations 4) Accessible to the general public 5) Offers background for more specialized readers including researchers as well as those with advanced degrees. The Security Hippie

The Security Hippie

The Security Hippie is Barak Engel’s second book. As the originator of the “Virtual CISO” (fractional security chief) concept he has served as security leader in dozens of notable organizations such as Mulesoft Stubhub Amplitude Analytics and many others. The Security Hippie follows his previous book Why CISOs Fail which became a sleeper hit earning a spot in the Cybercannon project as a leading text on the topic of information security management. In this new book Barak looks at security purely through the lens of story-telling sharing many and varied experiences from his long and accomplished career as organizational and thought leader and visionary in the information security field. Instead of instructing this book teaches by example sharing many real situations in the field and actual events from real companies as well as Barak’s related takes and thought processes. An out-of-the-mainstream counterculture thinker – Hippie – in the world of information security Barak’s rich background and unusual approach to the field come forth in this book in vivid color and detail allowing the reader to sit back and enjoy these experiences and perhaps gain insights when faced with similar issues themselves or within their organizations. The author works hard to avoid technical terms as much as possible and instead focus on the human and behavioral side of security finding the humor inherent in every anecdote and using it to demystify the field and connect with the reader. Importantly these are not the stories that made the news; yet they are the ones that happen all the time. If you’ve ever wondered about the field of information security but have been intimidated by it or simply wished for more shared experiences then The Security Hippie is the perfect way to open that window by accompanying Barak on some of his many travels into the land of security.

Neutrino Physics

Neutrino Physics

When Kai Zuber’s pioneering text on neutrinos was published in 2003 the author correctly predicted that the field would see tremendous growth in the immediate future. In that book Professor Zuber provided a comprehensive self-contained examination of neutrinos covering their research history and theory as well as their application to particle physics astrophysics nuclear physics and the broad reach of cosmology; but now to be truly comprehensive and accurate the field’s seminal reference needs to be revised and expanded to include the latest research conclusions and implications. Revised as needed to be equal to the research of today Neutrino Physics Third Edition delves into neutrino cross-sections mass measurements double beta decay solar neutrinos neutrinos from supernovae and high-energy neutrinos as well as entirely new experimental results in the context of theoretical models. Written to be accessible to graduate students and readers from diverse backgrounds this edition like the first provides both an introduction to the field as well as the information needed by those looking to make their own contributions to it. And like the second edition it whets the researcher’s appetite going beyond certainty to pose those questions that still need answers. Features Presents the only single-author comprehensive text on neutrino physics Includes experimental and theoretical particle physics and examines solar neutrinos and astroparticle implications Offers details on new developments and recent experiments
