New Ergonomics Perspective Selected papers of the 10th Pan-Pacific Conference on Ergonomics Tokyo Japan 25-28 August 2014

New Ergonomics Perspective represents a selection of the papers presented at the 10th Pan-Pacifi c Conference on Ergonomics (PPCOE) held in Tokyo Japan August 25-28 2014. The first Pan-Pacific Conference on Occupational Ergonomics was held in 1990 at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health Japan. The main theme of the PPCOE 1990 was “Searching for Solutions to Occupational Problems. ” The successful meetings have taken place in 1990 (Kitakyushu Japan) 1992 (Wuhan China) 1994 (Seoul Korea) 1996 (Taipei Taiwan) 1998 (Kitakyushu Japan) 2001 (Beijing China) 2004 (Cairns Australia) 2007 (Bangkok Thailand) and 2010 (Kaohsiung Taiwan). After two decades of collective endeavors the conferences have established globally recognized excellence in scientific and professional contributions. Now PPCOE activities are entering a new stage after a quarter century of history. Fortunately participants of the PPCOE Final in Tokyo are eager to take a first step on the road to its rebirth: the establishment of a new mature PPCOE. PPCOE pursues ergonomics as a practical science covering a broad spectrum of up-to-date and comprehensive ergonomics issues. This book was organized into six thematic chapters including Aging and Occupational Safety Workplace Ergonomics Occupational Ergonomics Healthcare and Special Populations Human Computer Interaction and Current Issues and Ergonomics Approach. | New Ergonomics Perspective Selected papers of the 10th Pan-Pacific Conference on Ergonomics Tokyo Japan 25-28 August 2014

The Blood-Brain Barrier in Health and Disease Volume One Morphology Biology and Immune Function

The Blood-Brain Barrier in Health and Disease Volume One Morphology Biology and Immune Function

Located at the interface between blood and the brain the blood-brain barrier is a dynamic permeability barrier formed by a continuous layer of specialized endothelial cells endowed with important permeability transport and regulatory functions that both protect the internal milieu of the brain and allow essential nutrients to be transported into the brain. Over the last 25 years we have witnessed remarkable expansion of our knowledge of the structure biology and function of the cerebral endothelium. In The Blood-Brain Barrier in Health and Disease Volume 1 international experts discuss basic and new concepts and most recent advances pertaining to the development of the cerebral microvascular system. Subjects include the structure function permeability properties transport mechanisms and the inherent heterogeneity of the cerebral endothelium; the anatomy and physiological properties of the neurovascular unit; functional aspects of the choroid plexus; and important concepts and advances made over the last two decades that have shaped our understanding of the immunological function of the blood-brain barrier. This book is intended to serve as a valuable source of basic and advanced information for researchers students and clinicians interested in this fast-expanding field and stimulate further research well into the future. | The Blood-Brain Barrier in Health and Disease Volume One Morphology Biology and Immune Function

Cytochrome P450 2D6 Structure Function Regulation and Polymorphism

Cytochrome P450 2D6 Structure Function Regulation and Polymorphism

Cytochromes are proteins that catalyze electron transfer reactions of well-known metabolic pathways and are classified in various superfamilies. The CYP or P450 superfamily accounts for 90% of the oxidative metabolism of clinical drugs. One member of this superfamily P450 2D6 (or CYP2D6) singlehandedly metabolizes about 25% of all medications in the human liver. Cytochrome P450 2D6: Structure Function Regulation and Polymorphism reviews the current knowledge of CYP2D6 as well as the maturing body of evidence indicating its significance to clinical and pharmacological researchers and practitioners. This book focuses on the critical role CYP2D6 plays in the human liver. It examines the genetic epigenetic physiological pathological and structural factors of the gene that govern the highly variable metabolism of a number of drugs in clinical use. It highlights the impact of the functional roles of CYP2D6 on clinical practice and drug development and also discusses implications for precise medicine strategies to avoid adverse drug reactions and paths for future research. Cytochrome P450 2D6 is a unique valuable book focusing on a single but immensely powerful human gene. It provides the first single source of comprehensive information on CYP2D6 that serves as an important reference for medical biomedical pharmaceutical and nursing researchers practitioners and students. | Cytochrome P450 2D6 Structure Function Regulation and Polymorphism

Driving Behavior Managing Resources in a Complex Task

Driving Behavior Managing Resources in a Complex Task

In the U. S. drivers over the age of 65 now account for nearly 20% of licensed drivers. This number will increase by 25% to nearly 70 million by the year 2030. Some of these older drivers may not be capable of operating their vehicles safely in all conditions. The book investigates the key aspects of driving tasks and their relation to the sensory perceptual motor and cognitive processes. Effects on driving performance including aging are described with a view toward improving future vehicle and road design as well as driver training and evaluation. This title: Presents a comprehensive quantitative analysis of human physical and mental processes to driving behavior. Showcases recent review and analysis of driver vehicle and road environment design factors. Discusses the fundamentals of driving behavior in vehicle control and guidance collision avoidance and hazard perception. Examines the effects of design issues on vehicles and road environments. Highlights specific quantifiable attributes of physical and mental functions related to driving approaches. Written for professionals in diverse fields including ergonomics health and safety human factors transportation engineering and automotive engineering this book is the essential guide to driving practices and habits. Its appeal will extend to those involved in vehicle design roadway environments driver training and regulatory agencies. | Driving Behavior Managing Resources in a Complex Task

Coccidiosis in Livestock Poultry Companion Animals and Humans

Coccidiosis in Livestock Poultry Companion Animals and Humans

Coccidiosis is one of the most important diseases of livestock particularly poultry with billions of dollars spent on prevention worldwide. The disease is so important and pervasive that until recently all poultry feed was medicated with coccidiostats mainly antibiotics. With the rapid development of drug resistance the search is on for alternative methods of control of coccidiosis in poultry. With chapters authored by internationally renowned scientists this book covers coccidiosis in all major livestock species including cattle sheep and goats. Special emphasis is given to poultry coccidiosis given the significant economic impact and another chapter looks at intestinal coccidiosis in humans including Cyclospora. Chapters discuss techniques molecular biology host-pathogen immunobiology and immunoprophylaxis genetics and genomics biology and chemotherapy. Despite an explosion of research in the last 40 years there has been no new book published discussing conventional coccidiosis for more than 25 years. This comprehensive review therefore answers an urgent need for a book dealing exclusively with conventional coccidia (Cystoisospora Cyclospora). It provides concise authoritative up-to-date information on coccidiosis with particular attention given to research in the last 28 years. This book is essential reading for any practitioner or researcher involved in livestock production including biologists veterinarians parasitologists and researchers from government academia and industry. | Coccidiosis in Livestock Poultry Companion Animals and Humans
