Geocryology Characteristics and Use of Frozen Ground and Permafrost Landforms

Geocryology Characteristics and Use of Frozen Ground and Permafrost Landforms

This book provides a general survey of Geocryology which is the study of frozen ground called permafrost. Frozen ground is the product of cold climates as well as a variety of environmental factors. Its major characteristic is the accumulation of large quantities of ice which may exceed 90% by volume. Soil water changing to ice results in ground heaving while thawing of this ice produces ground subsidence often accompanied by soil flowage. Permafrost is very susceptible to changes in weather and climate as well as to changes in the microenvironment. Cold weather produces contraction of the ground resulting in cracking of the soil as well as breakup of concrete rock etc. Thus permafrost regions have unique landforms and processes not found in warmer lands. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 provides an introduction to the characteristics of permafrost. Four chapters deal with its definition and characteristics the unique processes operating there the factors affecting it and its general distribution. Part 2 consists of seven chapters describing the characteristic landforms unique to these areas and the processes involved in their formation. Part 3 discusses the special problems encountered by engineers in construction projects including settlements roads and railways the oil and gas industry mining and the agricultural and forest industries. The three authors represent three countries and three language groups and together have over 120 years of experience of working in permafrost areas throughout the world. The book contains over 300 illustrations and photographs and includes an extensive bibliography in order to introduce the interested reader to the large current literature. Finalist of the 2019 PROSE Awards. | Geocryology Characteristics and Use of Frozen Ground and Permafrost Landforms

Ethics and the Practice of Forensic Science

Ethics and the Practice of Forensic Science

While one would hope that forensic scientists investigators and experts are intrinsically ethical by nature the reality is that these individuals have morality as varied as the general population. These professionals confront ethical dilemmas every day some with clear-cut protocols and others that frequently have no definitive answers. Since the publication of the first edition of Ethics and the Practice of Forensic Science the field of forensic science has continued to see its share of controversy. This runs the gamut of news stories from investigators lab personnel or even lab directors falsifying results committing perjury admitting to fraud to overturned convictions questions about bias ethics and what constitutes an expert on the witness stand. This fully updated edition tackles all these issues—including some specific instances and cases of unethical behavior—and addresses such salient issues as accreditation requirements standardization of ethical codes examiner certification and standards for education and training. The new edition provides:A new chapter on the Ferguson Effect faced by the criminal justice systemThe context of forensic science ethics in relation to general scientific ethics measurement uncertainty and ethics in criminal justice Ethical conundrums and real-world examples that forensic scientists confront every day The ethics and conduct codes of 20 different forensic and scientific professional organizations An outline of the National Academies of Science (NAS) recommendations and progress made on ethics in forensic science since the release of the NAS reportEthics and the Practice of Forensic Science Second Edition explores the range of ethical issues facing those who work in the forensic sciences—highlights the complicated nature of ethics and decision-making at the crime scene in the lab and in the courts. The book serves both as an essential resource for laboratories to train their employees and as an invaluable textbook for the growing number of courses on ethics in criminal justice and forensic science curricula. Accompanying PowerPoint® slides and an Instructor’s Manual with Test Bank are available to professors upon qualifying course adoption.

Small-Scale Synthesis of Laboratory Reagents with Reaction Modeling

Small-Scale Synthesis of Laboratory Reagents with Reaction Modeling

The in-lab preparation of certain chemical reagents provides a number of advantages over purchasing various commercially prepared samples. This is especially true in isolated regions where acquiring the necessary substances from overseas can cause undue delay and inconvenience due to restrictions on the transportation of hazardous chemicals. An invaluable resource for chemists in a variety of environments Small-Scale Synthesis of Laboratory Reagents with Reaction Modeling presents efficient sensible and versatile methods for the laboratory preparation of common chemical reagents. Rapid reliable synthesis Designed to facilitate smooth experimentation in the lab this volume presents preparations chosen for their short duration availability of apparatus high yield and high purity of the product. Adding an educational component the book also discusses fundamental processes in inorganic chemistry presenting original modeling of reactions and their practical implementation. Theoretical aspects are discussed to a greater extent than is usual in synthetic literature in cases where there is a direct impact on experimental parameters such as the reaction time yield and purity of the product. More than 30 convenient time-saving preparationsFocusing on simple synthesis of high-purity reagents the book contains over 30 presentations a substantial number of which are mathematically modeled for the first time. Most syntheses can be carried out in one day using common laboratory equipment making this volume a valuable and time-saving tool.
