In Shadowgrounds, the debut project of the Finnish company Frozenbyte, the player will play the role of a colonist who has to face a horde of aliens attacking the outpost on Ganymede. In many respects, the whole thing refers to the legendary production of Team 17 called Alien Breed - only that its performance is of the 21st century.
We observe the action in isometric projection, the struggles take place in a fully three-dimensional environment. Our daredevils (there are several characters to choose from) will travel through huge colony complexes and try to get rid of all the aggressors. The opponents, divided into several species, are controlled by giant creatures that perform the function of the so-called "Bosses". Of course, we will have to face them from time to time. Despite the rich arsenal of extermination measures, the fight will not be easy and the enemy will certainly have time to bleed some blood.
An extremely interesting feature of Shadowgrounds is the ability to freely refine the means of extermination. The players decide for themselves what element they will need at the moment and, accordingly, adapt their weapons to the threat. We test the firepower of weapons not only on opponents, but also on interior items that can be completely destroyed. Some of the objects, such as barrels with fuel, will help us in combat, others, in turn, will reveal a hidden passage after destruction.
The Finns made sure that the fast-paced action harmonized with a pleasant audiovisual setting. There are tons of graphic effects included in the program, including dynamic lighting, natural representation of water and lava, and high-quality textures. The game is constantly accompanied by music that drains the brain, which speeds up in crisis situations, increasing our heartbeat.
