Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a tactical turn-based RPG in the convention of horror. The whole was created by the independent studio Red Wasp Design, and the production was assisted by Chaosium, the publisher of the tabletop role-playing game Call of Cthulhu. Thanks to this, it was possible to transfer to the screens not only the atmosphere of the original paper, but also a lot of its mechanics.
The authors set their production in a dark reality created by the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft. In this vision, the universe is full of alien deities and ancient beings much older than the human species. Some of these entities ruled the Earth millions of years ago, and now lie dormant waiting to wake up.
Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land takes place during the First World War. The player takes command of a small group of six composed of detectives and soldiers. They will have to face a blasphemous ancient creature who stirs up conflict between powers and wants to use bloodshed to build their own army of the undead. Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land belongs to the genre commonly known as tactical RPGs.
The gameplay consists, in particular, in fighting turn-based battles. The game boasts a quite extensive combat system. Each character has its own number of action points that determine what actions, including attack and movement, can be performed. For example, we can fire a pistol twice in one turn. The rifle, on the other hand, requires reloading, so you can only pull the trigger once. We can improve accuracy by aiming for longer, which costs more points than shooting from the hip, but also gives you a better chance of hitting. The shield system plays a key role in reducing the risk of injury. We can also set ambushes for enemies. If, at the end of the turn, the heroes still have action points in reserve, then when one of the enemies is on the line of fire during the enemy's turn, our units will attack him automatically.
