It is filled with all sorts of aliens, sometimes with tasks for us to do, and sometimes with hostile intentions towards us. Tactical combat takes place in real-time side view, like in FTL, and takes place not only between ships, but also on board ships. The permadeath mechanic has been implemented in Shortest Trip to Earth. After losing a fight, the game ends and you have to start over. A player who loses a skull and fails to retrieve it before another player scores for it is out of the game. The struggle, presented from the camera hanging above the character's head, takes place in twenty-five arenas.
