Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Focusing on notions of diaspora identity and agency this book examines ethnicity in war-torn Sri Lanka. It highlights the historical development and negotiation of a new identification of Up-country Tamil amidst Sri Lanka’s violent ethnic politics. Over the past thirty years Up-country (Indian) Tamils generally have tried to secure their vision of living within a multi-ethnic Sri Lanka not within Tamil Eelam the separatist dream that ended with the civil war in 2009. Exploring Sri Lanka within the deep history of colonial-era South Asian plantation diasporas the book argues Up-country Tamils form a diaspora next-door to their ancestral homeland. It moves beyond simplistic Sinhala-Tamil binaries and shows how Sri Lanka’s ethnic troubles actually have more in common with similar battles that diasporic Indians have faced in Fiji and Trinidad than with Hindu-Muslim communalism in neighbouring India Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shedding new light on issues of agency citizenship displacement and re-placement within the formation of diasporic communities and identities this book demonstrates the ways that culture workers including politicians trade union leaders academics and NGO workers have facilitated the development of a new identity as Up-country Tamil. It is of interest to academics working in the fields of modern South Asia diaspora violence post-conflict nations religion and ethnicity. | Everyday Ethnicity in Sri Lanka Up-country Tamil Identity Politics

Handbook of Nutraceuticals Volume II Scale-Up Processing and Automation

Handbook of Nutraceuticals Volume II Scale-Up Processing and Automation

Due in part to an absence of universally accepted standardization methods nutraceuticals and functional foods face regulatory ignorance marketing incompetence and ethical impunity. Even though many researchers believe that there is a connection between nutraceuticals and functional foods and reduced health care expenses as well as disease prevention the credibility and quality control challenge remains. The industry needs more standardized testing reliable reproducible clinical studies to prove the efficacies of products in vivo and in-process controls to maintain universal product quality. The first volume of the Handbook of Nutraceuticals re-defined Nutraceuticals covering the regulatory aspect as well as insisting on the cGMP’s and SOP’s for the nutraceutical manufacturing. This second volume focuses on the scale up processing and automation of nutraceutical production under cGMP production regulations. It covers: Advancements in extraction methods Unit operations involved in scaling up and processing Rheological and flow properties of products as characterization parameters Fortification and value enhancement using nanotechnology Green concepts in food industry Flavoring of nutraceuticals Clinical batch nutraceutical manufacturing New technologies to prevent counterfeiting Automation in nutraceutical industry The nutraceutical market is at the crossroads. With a nearly $200 billion market for nutraceuticals and functional foods by end of 2013 and promising developments in product design and discovery the industry must be ready for intense scrutiny. The standardization of testing clinical studies and adherence to rigorous industry and scientific methods is necessary for the advancement acceptance and development of high quality effective nutraceuticals. With contributions from leading authorities this book brings together hundreds of years of combined experience to provide guidance on how to increase the quality and credibility of nutraceutical products. | Handbook of Nutraceuticals Volume II Scale-Up Processing and Automation

Hydroponic Food Production A Definitive Guidebook for the Advanced Home Gardener and the Commercial Hydroponic Grower

The eighth edition of Hydroponic Food Production: A Definitive Guidebook for the Advanced Home Gardener and the Commercial Hydroponic Grower serves as a comprehensive guide to soilless culture (hydroponics) for hobby and commercial growers. Extensively updated from the seventh edition published in 2013 this bestseller is a methods book to show the reader how to set up a hydroponic operation with the options of using any of many hydroponic cultures presently used in the industry to grow vegetable crops. Written by Dr Howard M. Resh a recognized authority worldwide on hydroponics the book presents detailed information on hydroponic growing systems and features more than 600 photographs (200 in full color) drawings and tables. New to this edition: Presents greenhouse environmental control systems and examples of sustainable greenhouse technology and demonstrates uses of automation and robotics in harvesting grading and packing. Introduces indoor vertical farming and vertical growing systems as well as the expansion of tropical hydroponics and rooftop greenhouses. Provides information on automation in large-scale raft culture and nutrient film technique (NFT) operations in the growing of lettuce leafy greens and herbs. A new chapter 12 discusses control of environmental factors in greenhouses. It covers information on systems to regulate temperature relative humidity carbon dioxide enrichment lighting and fertigation with examples of sustainable greenhouse technology. This chapter demonstrates automation in the regulation of the greenhouse environment to crop production methods with emphasis on robotics in harvesting to transporting grading and packing equipment. The use of retractable roof structures in tropical humid climates is an alternative for growing greenhouse crops. A new chapter 14 describes vertical indoor farming. It presents background information on early vertical greenhouses and sack culture systems to present vertical systems used by greenhouses and existing vertical greenhouses and future concepts. Vertical indoor farming reviews systems of vertical tiers of shelving growing lettuce leafy greens and herbs under LED lighting in large warehouses. The chapter exemplifies automation in these vertical farms with each specific system and it contains information on vertical growing in containers and/or modular units. The Future of Wireless Networks Architectures Protocols and Services

The Future of Wireless Networks Architectures Protocols and Services

The exponential increase in mobile device users and high-bandwidth applications has pushed the current 3G and 4G wireless networks to their capacity. Moreover it is predicted that mobile data traffic will continue to grow by over 300 percent by 2017. To handle this spectacular growth the development of improved wireless networks for the future has been of paramount importance. The Future of Wireless Networks: Architectures Protocols and Services discusses the future of wireless networks including the emerging network architectures underlying protocols services and applications. The first part of the book focuses on new wireless network architectures that are being developed such as mobile SDN wireless local area networks (i. e. 802. 11) and wireless sensor networks for the Smart Grid. In the second part of the book the authors discuss the new protocols and enabling technologies for the different wireless network architectures. These include wireless MAC protocols resource allocation in cognitive radio networks multicast transmission and femtocells which provide enhanced indoor coverage and increased network capacity. The book’s final section discusses several new services and applications that are springing up such as multisource selection for wireless peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and device-to-device (D2D) content sharing which reduces duplicated downloads of the same contents on cellular links by offloading the traffic onto other networks. This section also covers the next generation of wireless security and privacy control techniques that service providers can use to ensure that their infrastructures and services are adequately protected against all kinds of threats. | The Future of Wireless Networks Architectures Protocols and Services
