Resilient Post Disaster Recovery through Building Back Better

Resilient Post Disaster Recovery through Building Back Better

Building Back Better (BBB) has been a popular slogan in disaster recovery efforts around the world including the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami the 2009 Samoan Tsunami the 2010 Haiti Earthquake and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. BBB has recently been identified as one of four priorities of action for disaster risk reduction globally in the next 15 years by the United Nations Sendai Framework. However there has consistently been a mismatch and confusion in the interpretation of the phrase and what BBB encapsulates which has made proper implementation difficult and unsuccessful at times. This book explains the concept of Building Back Better as an innovative holistic approach to rebuilding a community following a disaster event in order to develop resilience. It begins by exploring the background development and definitions of BBB. The theory behind establishing BBB as a holistic concept is explained and the internationally recognised BBB Framework developed by the authors is introduced and described. Each of the components of the Framework are explained in detail with findings from international research and case studies from the US Haiti Indonesia Samoa Sri Lanka Vanuatu Gaza China Australia UK and New Zealand providing practical recommendations for implementation in recovery projects. There is a focus on the translation of BBB theory into practice to assist implementers to use the BBB Framework and BBB Indicators introduced in this book as an effective tool to plan and implement disaster recovery projects. This publication can be used as a handbook by government non-governmental and private industry practitioners to prepare for and implement post disaster recovery projects that benefit and strengthen local communities and as a core text on international Disaster and Energy Management courses. | Resilient Post Disaster Recovery through Building Back Better

Al Jazeera and the Global Media Landscape The South is Talking Back

This book analyzes how and why Al Jazeera English (AJE) became the channel of choice to understand the massive protests across the Arab world 2011. Aiming to explain the ‘Al Jazeera moment ’ it tracks the channel’s bumpy road towards international recognition in a longitudinal in-depth analysis of the channel’s editorial profile and strategies. Studying AJE from its launch in mid-November 2006 to the ‘Arab Spring’ it explains and problematizes the channel’s ambitious editorial agenda and strategies examines the internal conflicts practical challenges and minor breakthroughs in its formative years. The Al Jazeera-phenomenon has received massive attention but it remains under-researched. The growth of transnational satellite television has transformed the global media landscape into a complex web of multi-vocal multimedia and multi-directional flows. Based on a combination of policy- production- and content analysis of comprehensive empirical data the book offers an innovative perspective on the theorization of global news contra-flows. By problematizing the distinctive characteristics of AJE it examines the strategic motivation behind the channel and the ways in which its production processes and news profile are meant to be different from its Anglo-American competitors. These questions underscore a central nexus of the book: the changing relationship between transnational satellite news and power. | Al Jazeera and the Global Media Landscape The South is Talking Back

Prospects for Sustainable Development in the Chinese Countryside The Political Economy of Chinese Ecological Agriculture

Prospects for Sustainable Development in the Chinese Countryside The Political Economy of Chinese Ecological Agriculture

This title was first published in 2000: An examination of the potential for Chinese ecological agriculture providing a basis for sustainable development in the Chinese countryside. Richard Sanders involves primary research in seven villages and four countries in China that have adopted ecological agriculture. He examines the concept of sustainable development generally and analyses China’s political-economic policies towards the countryside since 1949 the impacts on the environment and the state of China’s environmental protection. The study addresses three main questions: 1. Is Chinese ecological agriculture worth adopting - specifically does CEA promise a form of sustainable rural development? 2. To the extent that it does what are the social political and economic conditions in the Chinese countryside which most favour its extension? 3. To the extent that these conditions are restrictive what can the Chinese authorities do to make them less so and thus encourage its extension? The study concludes that the CEA despite certain difficulties and problems holds out the prospect of a more sustainable future for the rural economy than more usual forms of activity in the Chinese countryside. It finds that the conditions for adopting CEA are restrictive and that while the Chinese government is in favour of extending CEA it must reconsider questions of land management and ownership and assess long-term needs. | Prospects for Sustainable Development in the Chinese Countryside The Political Economy of Chinese Ecological Agriculture

Building a Programmable Logic Controller with a PIC16F648A Microcontroller

Building a Programmable Logic Controller with a PIC16F648A Microcontroller

Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are extensively used in industry to perform automation tasks with manufacturers offering a variety of PLCs that differ in functions program memories and the number of inputs/outputs (I/O). Not surprisingly the design and implementation of these PLCs have long been a secret of manufacturers. Unveiling the mysteries of PLC technology Building a Programmable Logic Controller with PIC16F648A Microcontroller explains how to design and use a PIC16F648A-microcontroller-based PLC. The author first described a microcontroller-based implementation of a PLC in a series of articles published in Electronics World magazine between 2008 and 2010. This book is based on an improved version of the project including:Updates to the hardware configuration with a smaller CPU board and two I/O extension boards that now support 16 inputs and 16 outputs instead of 8An increased clock frequency of 20 MHzImprovements to several macrosFlowcharts to help you understand the macros (functions)In this book the author provides detailed explanations of hardware and software structures. He also describes PIC Assembly macros for all basic PLC functions which are illustrated with numerous examples and flowcharts. An accompanying downloadable resources contain source files (. ASM) and object files (. HEX) for all of the examples in the book. It also supplies printed circuit board (PCB) (Gerber and . pdf) files so that you can have the CPU board and I/O extension boards produced by a PCB manufacturer or produce your own boards. Making PLCs more easily accessible this unique book is written for advanced students practicing engineers and hobbyists who want to learn how to build their own microcontroller-based PLC. It assumes some previous knowledge of digital logic design microcontrollers and PLCs as well as familiarity with the PIC16F series of microcontrollers and w | Building a Programmable Logic Controller with a PIC16F648A Microcontroller

Neuroaesthetics

Neuroaesthetics

The beginning of psychological aesthetics is normally traced back to the publication of Gustav Theodor Fechner's seminal book Vorschule der Aesthetik in 1876. Following in the footsteps of this rich tradition editors Martin Skov and Oshin Vartanian view neuroaesthetics - the emerging field of inquiry concerned with uncovering the ways in which aesthetic behavior is caused by brain processes - as a natural extension of Fechner's 'empirical spirit' to understand the link between the objective and subjective worlds inherent in aesthetic experience. The editors had two specific aims for this book. The first was to highlight the diversity of approaches that are underway under the banner of neuroaesthetics. Currently this topic is being investigated from experimental evolutionary neuropsychological and neuroimaging perspectives to tackle problems in the visual arts literature music and film. Its quintessentially interdisciplinary nature has functioned as a breeding ground for generating and testing hypotheses in multiple domains. The second goal was more integrative and involved distilling some of the key features common to these diverse strands of work. The book presents a possible framework for neuroaesthetics by highlighting what the contributors consider to be its defining features and offering a working definition of neuroaesthetics that captures these features. Neuroaesthetics will provide an empirical and theoretical framework to motivate further work in this area. Ultimately the hope is that puzzles in aesthetics can be solved through insights from biology but that the contribution can be truly bidirectional.
