Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Within linguistics there has been a great deal of interest in discourse particles for some time now especially within semantics and pragmatics. The term ‘discourse particles’ has been used to cover a broad range of phenomena including such things as ‘sentence final particles ’ ‘discourse adverbs’ and other related phenomena. However most research in the area (particularly within formal semantics and pragmatics) focuses on a restricted set of languages and there is little consensus on the proper formal treatment of particles partly due to the limited range of data available. In recent years there has been extensive development of the formal approach to discourse particles which often treats these words as devices for marking information update. Also important is the extension of data to non-Western languages like Japanese Korean or Chinese. These volumes are the first to give an exclusive focus on particles in non-European languages (in this case Asian languages) from the perspective of formal as well as non-formal semantics and pragmatics. These volumes include papers on Japanese Mandarin Tagalog Kimaragang Dusun Malay Singlish Thai and Vietnamese. The papers are informed by recent theoretical work in formal semantics and pragmatics relating to the meaning of particles. The collection contributes to our theoretical understanding of the meaning of discourse particles and to empirical knowledge of discourse particles in the languages of Asia. | Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Human Performance Workload and Situational Awareness Measures Handbook Third Edition - 2-Volume Set

Vector Analysis and Cartesian Tensors Third edition

The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy

The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy

Research on the growth of the precarious economy is of signifi cant interest as the economy increasingly becomes dependent on gig work. However as platform and automated service work has grown there remains a chasm in understanding the key aspects of digital labour. This handbook presents comprehensive theoretical empirical and historical accounts of the political economy of informal work from the late 20th century to the present. It examines the rich and varied analysis and critique of the informalisation of work focusing on its most signifi cant theories intellectual traditions and authors. It highlights the political social cultural and developmental impact of the deterioration of employment in the Global North and Global South as well as the extreme threat posed to the planet by the growth of contingent work poverty and enduring and increasing inequalities produced and reproduced by the reformation of capitalism in the contemporary age of neoliberal capitalism. The period from the 1980s to the present is marked by the expanded extraction of surplus value from workers through the creation of non-standard jobs and the restructuring of work. A central component of the restructuring of work is the extension of gig employment through the development of algorithmic platforms which direct labourers to perform discrete tasks. This is a definitive collection representing the primary reference work contributing to our understanding of the subject. The book is written and presented in a clear manner accessible to scholars and researchers of international political economy labour economics and sociology who are eager for new research examining this phenomenon as well as specialists in the field of labour relations. The Routledge Handbook of Indigenous Development

This Handbook inverts the lens on development asking what Indigenous communities across the globe hope and build for themselves. In contrast to earlier writing on development this volume focuses on Indigenous peoples as inspiring theorists and potent political actors who resist the ongoing destruction of their livelihoods. To foster their own visions of development they look from the present back to Indigenous pasts and forward to Indigenous futures. Key questions: How do Indigenous theories of justice sovereignty and relations between humans and non-humans inform their understandings of development? How have Indigenous people used Rights of Nature legal pluralism and global governance systems to push for their visions? How do Indigenous relations with the Earth inform their struggles against natural resource extraction? How have native peoples negotiated the dangers and benefits of capitalism to foster their own life projects? How do Indigenous peoples in diaspora and in cities around the world contribute to Indigenous futures? How can Indigenous intellectuals artists and scientists control their intellectual property and knowledge systems and bring into being meaningful collective life projects? The book is intended for Indigenous and non-Indigenous activists communities scholars and students. The Routledge Handbook of Wine and Culture

The Routledge Handbook of Wine and Culture

This title was a prize winner at the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) Awards 2023. The link between culture and wine reaches back into the earliest history of humanity. The Routledge Handbook of Wine and Culture brings together a newly comprehensive interdisciplinary overview of contemporary research and thinking on how wine fits into the cultural frameworks of production intermediation and consumption. Bringing together many leading researchers engaged in studying these phenomena it explores the different ways in which wine is constructed as a social artefact and how its representation and use acquire symbolic meaning. Wine can be analysed in different ways by varying disciplines involved in exploring wine and culture (anthropology economics and business geography history and sociology and as text). The Handbook uses these as lenses to consider how producers intermediaries and consumers use and create cultural significance. Specifically the work addresses the following: how wine relates to place belief systems and accompanying rituals; how it may be used as a marker of the identity and mechanisms of civilising processes (often in conjunction with food and the arts); how its framing intersects with science and nature; the ideologies and power relations which arise around all these activities; and the relation of this to wine markets and public institutions. This is essential reading for researchers and students in education for the wine industry and in the humanities and social sciences engaged in understanding patterns of human ingenuity and interaction such as sociology anthropology economics health geography business tourism cultural studies food studies and history.
