American Artists On Art From 1940 To 1980

American Artists On Art From 1940 To 1980

From the Preface:The fact that so much of modern art has devoted itself to the exploration and assertion of its own identity is reflected in but does not explain the increasing amount of writing and talking on the part of contemporary artists. Rather the whole history of the changing role of art and artists in a democratic industrial and technological society stands behind the spate of artists' words and the public's hunger for them?even some of the general public out there beyond art's little circle. Statements by artists appeal somewhat the way drawings do: they bring us or at least they hold the promise of bringing us closer to the artist's thoughts and feelings and to an understanding of his or her modus operandi; they hold the keys to a mysterious realm. And sometimes they offer us the sheer pleasure of good reading. Such is the primary raison d'e of this book. Its other motivation is educational and stems from the frustrating lack in teaching contemporary art of any single compilation of statements by American artists from 1940 to the present. ? This anthology differs in several respects from those others that do include documents of American art since 1940. ? The selection I have made is devoted exclusively to statements of artists; it is limited to the last four decades; it presents in a single volume a representative and fairly comprehensive coverage of major developments in American art beginning with Abstract Expressionism; and whenever possible it cities the first or among the very earliest documents signalizing a shift in the definition intent or direction of art. ? | American Artists On Art From 1940 To 1980

Curating the Contemporary in the Art Museum

Curating the Contemporary in the Art Museum

Curating the Contemporary in the Art Museum investigates the art museum as a space where the contemporary is staged – in exhibitions collecting practices communication and policies. Curating the Contemporary in the Art Museum traces the art museum back to the postwar era. Including contributions by established and emerging art historians academics and curators the book proposes that the art museum is engaged in the contemporary in a double sense: it (re)presents contemporary art while the contemporary condition itself also has a significant impact on art and the museum that houses it. Presenting a diverse range of international cases of exhibitions and curatorial practices which hail primarily from Europe and Scandinavia the essays examine the politics of staging “national” “international” and “global” framings of modernism as well as the new public spaces shaped in digital practices and changing political frameworks. The book investigates both the seminal and the unknown exhibitions and institutions that created contemporary art as we know it today. Curating the Contemporary in the Art Museum provides a historical perspective on the museum of contemporary art. It constitutes a step towards differencing the canon of modernist and contemporary art and a more complex understanding of the politics of curating the contemporary in the art museum why it will be of interest to academics and students engaged in the study of museums curating exhibitions and art history.

Humanistic Management Organization and Aesthetics Art of Management and Management of Art

Humanistic Management Organization and Aesthetics Art of Management and Management of Art

The book is the first worldwide publication of a complex theory of management aesthetics in humanistic management based on the aesthetics and arts approach allowing for a complete and systemic understanding of the management art and art management phenomena. The methodology is based on the critical literature review and empirical research applying qualitative quantitative and autoethnographic approaches. The main goal of this monograph is to create a holistic model that organises the issues of management aesthetics and shows the interdependence of the components of this model. The role of this model should be to perform a central function for a complete and systemic understanding of the phenomenon of management aesthetics as well as to perform the function of a field based on which analysis of individual issues in the area of management aesthetics is conducted. The critical component of this holistic model is Maria Gołaszewska’s theory of the aesthetic situation. Two theses of the book are the following: (1) the theory of aesthetics and artistic practice have the potential to enrich the theory and practice of management with qualitative components through deep immersion in the world of values and (2) management theory and practice have the potential to enrich the theory of aesthetics and artistic practice with efficiency components. | Humanistic Management Organization and Aesthetics Art of Management and Management of Art
