Mapping the Total Value Stream A Comprehensive Guide for Production and Transactional Processes

Mapping the Total Value Stream A Comprehensive Guide for Production and Transactional Processes

Mapping the Total Value Stream defines and elaborates on the concepts of value stream mapping (VSM) for both production and transactional processes. This book reshapes and extends the lessons originally put forward in a number of pioneering works including the popular Value Stream Management for the Lean Office. It reinforces fundamental concepts and theoretical models with real-world applications and complete examples of the value stream mapping technique. To educate VSM mappers on the specific mechanics of the technique the text provides in-depth explanations for commonly encountered situations. The authors also provide a more complete perspective on the concept of availability. While they discuss availability of equipment in transactional processes they extend the concept by elaborating on availability as it applies to employees. The calculation of process lead time for work queues is taken to an advanced level not only is the calculation of this lead time explained but the text also covers the very real possibility of having more work in the queue than available time. While previous books have focused on only production process VSM or transactional process VSM this work meets the real needs of both manufacturers and service sector organizations by dealing with both types. It goes beyond explaining each scenario to teach readers what techniques are commonly applicable to both and also explains areas of difference so that mappers will be able to readily adapt to whatever unique situations present themselves. | Mapping the Total Value Stream A Comprehensive Guide for Production and Transactional Processes

The Toyota Production System Journey The Continuously Changing Features of TPS and Lean Thinking

The Toyota Production System (TPS) is regarded as a sophisticated concept that helps us understand the world of manufacturing. It evolved from the system of mass-producing cars established by Ford and the Japanese have since endeavored to make their own universal production system. Though much has been accomplished TPS’ progress is a continuous process. The theme of this book is how to understand and learn TPS. There is a TPS concept that seems to elude many and that is that manufacturers should be able to make a product available at the moment a customer comes and asks for it. There are various ways and various tools that can be used to pursue the ideal state and therefore we need to focus on the basic principles of TPS. This book tries to explain those Toyota Production System concepts that may otherwise be elusive. This book focuses on the factory to help readers understand the fundamental ideology of TPS. The main character started his career as a technical expert in the R&D division of an automotive Company and eventually becomes an Instructor of TPS. His broad career in companies is used to vividly describe the form of the Toyota Production System. To explain the growth of apprentices of various titles and positions this story is woven with several short stories presented from the perspective of the main character who grows from being a group leader to section leader to manager to general manager. Essentially this book describes the Toyota Production System as based on the philosophy: “Always sketching out and pursuing the ideal state of manufacturing. ” | The Toyota Production System Journey The Continuously Changing Features of TPS and Lean Thinking

Disruptive Leadership Apple and the Technology of Caring Deeply-Nine Keys to Organizational Excellence and Global Impact

Disruptive Leadership Apple and the Technology of Caring Deeply-Nine Keys to Organizational Excellence and Global Impact

Disruptive leadership is a topic generating intense interest. Companies all over the world are trying to upend their industry through innovative products and services. Becoming a disruptive organization however is easier said than done. Even more difficult is being a company that continually disrupts. Is it possible to discern a code for how companies can achieve this? In this highly readable and engaging book a disruptive leadership framework is proposed in which caring deeply is placed at the center of the model. By turning care into a focal point a triphasic model is proposed that moves from the personal sphere (individual) to the corporate arena (organizational) and then to the global stage (impact). Nine keys are identified along this path for how companies can realize organizational excellence. While care may seem like a soft concept in the rough and tumble world of business it is argued how it is actually an inspired manner for providing direction structure and know-how that leads to powerful outcomes. Apple is profiled as a leading example of leveraging what is termed the technology of caring deeply. Other companies such as Nike IKEA Zappos Starbucks are also profiled. Finally a leadership canvas is provided to help activate the lessons shared in the book. | Disruptive Leadership Apple and the Technology of Caring Deeply-Nine Keys to Organizational Excellence and Global Impact

Quality Function Deployment and Systems Supportability Achieving Key Performance Parameters and Ensuring Functional Alignment

Quality Function Deployment and Systems Supportability Achieving Key Performance Parameters and Ensuring Functional Alignment

This book not only presents the overall development of quality function deployment (QFD) and what it has been used for to date but a new product support orientation by which it can be employed. It is product and service “system” focused and presents how blending the processes and elements of supportability and analysis into a QFD-modeled methodology can achieve optimal cost savings and performance efficiency and effectiveness. In addition a working model is provided that will assist those that elect to use such an approach to current/new product and/or service development. QFD is widely spreading throughout the world because of its outstanding usefulness. It is aimed to fulfill the customer’s expectation of a product or service design. Organizations of all sizes are using it to (1) save product and service design and development time (2) focus on how the product or service might satisfy the customer and (3) improve communication at all levels of an organization during the development process. Based on these three reasons today's traditional QFD can be divided into three branches and analyzed. First QFD can be implemented effectively for developing new products and designs by establishing the linkage between design stages through the manufacturing environment. However research has found that traditional QFD is quite weak in implementing modifications to existing product and service design during its predicted lifecycle. Second most research to this point has been squarely focused on the “voice of the customer” for prioritizing customer needs. While certainly needed the “voice of the system” that is being used to produce the product/service and how they operate during its intended life cycle has been given less attention. Third QFD is often viewed as overly labor-intensive and thus costly and because of its team-based development logic manual in nature by those involved during its development and implementation. Research has shown that life cycle sustainment planning and support for current or proposed products and/or services requires a seamless and balanced life cycle support methodology. To achieve this type of support twelve functional elements have been identified that form the product support infrastructure. A new approach one that views product support as an integrative activity where all twelve product support elements are assessed over the entire product and/or service life cycle is being deployed. With this deployment comes a need to ensure Key Performance Parameters (KPPs) are achieved and functional alignment obtained by balancing supportability element cost and provisioning throughout the entire product and/or service lifecycle not just during the development stage and to view the system as the “customer” and thus listen to the “Voice of the System” when assessing supportability requirements. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is such a tool. This book contains four sections. Section 1 provides an initial overview of QFD origins and history and highlights some of its use today. It addresses how QFD fits within the organization increasing revenue and reducing cost. It outlines a step-by-step strategy for successfully deploying QFD within the organization. Section 2 examines the evolving product and/or service requirement creating the design solution using QFD assessing supportability characteristics using QFD and performing functional supportability analysis using QFD. Section 3 provides a guide for developing the life cycle supportability solution using QFD methodology on an ongoing basis and managing processes throughout the systems lifecycle. Section 4 addresses using QFD in an imperfect world and will provide insight into how to use QFD beyond the standard “house of quality” concept. | Quality Function Deployment and Systems Supportability Achieving Key Performance Parameters and Ensuring Functional Alignment

Cognitive Readiness in Project Teams Reducing Project Complexity and Increasing Success in Project Management

Cognitive Readiness in Project Teams Reducing Project Complexity and Increasing Success in Project Management

Issues surrounding business complexity plague organizations throughout the world. This situation is particularly true of the numerous complex projects and programs upon which organizations embark on a regular basis. Current project management processes and standards are based on Newtonian/Cartesian principles such as linearity reductionism and single source problem causation. However complex projects exhibit both Newtonian/Cartesian characteristics and complex systems characteristics such as emergence self-organization non-linearity non-reductionism and multi-source problem causation. To conduct successful projects complementary ways of approaching projects are required and new competencies for those who manage projects and for those on project teams are required as well. There are a number of books available to help project managers and teams address the issue of systems behavior. However there are none that approach complex projects from a neuroscience-based approach to human behavior and ambiguity. This book does exactly that in order to reduce project complexity and thereby increase the probability of project success. Cognitive Readiness in Project Teams looks to the concept of cognitive readiness (CR) first developed by the United States Department of Defense to better prepare and manage teams of individuals in complex battlefield situations. Its intent is to make project managers and teams more focused responsive resilient and adaptive through self-mastery and the mastering of interpersonal relationships. It introduces a CR framework for project managers and teams. This framework has neuroscience fundamentals and theorems as the foundation for the three pillars of CR: mindfulness emotional intelligence and social intelligence. The book is a compendium of chapters written by renowned authors in the fields of project management neuroscience mindfulness and emotional and social intelligence. | Cognitive Readiness in Project Teams Reducing Project Complexity and Increasing Success in Project Management

The Lean Approach to Digital Transformation From Customer to Code and From Code to Customer

The Lean Approach to Digital Transformation From Customer to Code and From Code to Customer

The Lean Approach to Digital Transformation: From Customer to Code and From Code to Customer is organized into three parts that expose and develop the three capabilities that are essential for a successful digital transformation: 1. Understanding how to co-create digital services with users whether they are customers or future customers. This ability combines observation dialogue and iterative experimentation. The approach proposed in this book is based on the Lean Startup approach according to an extended vision that combines Design Thinking and Growth Hacking. Companies must become truly customer-centric from observation and listening to co-development. The revolution of the digital age of the 21st century is that customer orientation is more imperative - the era of abundance usages rate of change complexity of experiences and shift of power towards communities - are easier using digital tools and digital communities. 2. Developing an information system (IS) that is the backbone of the digital transformation – called “exponential information system” to designate an open IS (in particular on its borders) capable of interfacing and combining with external services positioned as a player in software ecosystems and built for processing scalable and dynamic data flows. The exponential information system is constantly changing and it continuously absorbs the best of information processing technology such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. 3. Building software “micro-factories” that produce service platforms which are called “Lean software factories. ” This “software factory” concept covers the integration of agile methods tooling and continuous integration and deployment practices a customer-oriented product approach and a platform approach based on modularity as well as API-based architecture and openness to external stakeholders. This software micro-factory is the foundation that continuously produces and provides constantly evolving services. These three capabilities are not unique or specific to this book they are linked to other concepts such as agile methods product development according to lean principles software production approaches such as CICD (continuous integration and deployment) or DevOps. This book weaves a common frame of reference for all these approaches to derive more value from the digital transformation and to facilitate its implementation. The title of the book refers to the “lean approach to digital transformation” because the two underlying frameworks Lean Startup and Lean Software Factory are directly inspired by Lean in the sense of the Toyota Way. The Lean approach is present from the beginning to the end of this book - it provides the framework for customer orientation and the love of a job well done which are the conditions for the success of a digital transformation. | The Lean Approach to Digital Transformation From Customer to Code and From Code to Customer

Lean for the Process Industries Dealing with Complexity Second Edition

Lean for the Process Industries Dealing with Complexity Second Edition

Compared to its widespread implementation across almost all areas of production Lean improvement efforts lag within the process industries. While many innovators have successfully applied Lean principles to these industries during the past three decades most of those pioneering efforts were never recorded to guide the improvement efforts of others. Drawing on more than 40 years of application experience at one of the world’s largest chemical and materials manufacturers coupled with 10 years in private practice Peter King corrects this void by providing the first comprehensive resource written explicitly for change agents within the process industries. Focusing on areas where the improvement needs of the process industry differ from parts assembly manufacturing Lean for the Process Industries: Dealing with Complexity Second Edition: Covers each of the eight wastes commonly described in Lean literature looking at how they manifest themselves in process operations. Explains how to adapt value stream mapping for process operations. Shows how to identify the root causes of bottlenecks and how to manage them to optimize flow until they can be eliminated. Provides practical techniques to overcome the barriers which have prevented the application of Cellular Manufacturing to process operations. Discusses the role of business leadership in a Lean strategy describing both enabling and counter-productive management behaviors Since the publication of the first edition of this book Peter King has been busy consulting with food beverage gasoline additive and nutraceutical companies - these new experiences have broadened his perspectives on certain Lean processes and have given him a richer set of examples to discuss in this new edition. While Value Stream Mapping is a very powerful tool to understand flow bottlenecks and waste in an operation the traditional format as presented in many other books does not describe all of the data required to fully understand process flow and its detractors. This new edition highlights the necessary additions with examples of why they are useful. Product wheel scheduling achieves production leveling in a far more comprehensive and effective way than traditional heijunka methods. This edition has a more thorough description of the wheel concept and design steps and more examples from actual applications. | Lean for the Process Industries Dealing with Complexity Second Edition

Nathan Tierney’s powerful storytelling is rarely seen in today’s health care business environment. We must redesign the health care delivery system-a team sport in service of patients hold it accountable with measurement to improve outcomes and quantify the resource costs over the full cycle of care. Value-based health care is a framework through which these goals are achieved and Tierney provides a detailed playbook to get your organization there. Outlined in incredible detail and clarity he presents core concepts and dives into the key metrics needed to build maintain and scale a successful value-based health care organization. Nathan shares a realistic vision of what any CEO should expect when developing their own Value Management Office. Nothing is more important to me than improving the lives of those I love. My personal mission is to create systemic change with an impact on the global stage. This playbook needs to be on the desk of every executive clinician and patient today. -Mahek Shah MD Senior Researcher and Senior Project Leader Harvard Business SchoolOur current healthcare system’s broken. The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) predicts health care costs could increase from 6% to 14% of GDP by 2060. The cause of this increase is due to (1) a global aging population (2) growing affluence (3) rise in chronic diseases and (4) better-informed patients; all of which raises the demand for healthcare. In 2006 Michael Porter and Elizabeth Teisberg authored the book ‘Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results. ’ In it they present their analysis of the root causes plaguing the health care industry and make the case for why providers suppliers consumers and employers should move towards a patient-centric approach that optimizes value for patients. According to Porter value for patients should be the overarching principle for our broken system. Since 2006 Professor Porter accompanied by his esteemed Harvard colleague Profesor Robert Kaplan have worked tirelessly to promote this new approach and pilot it with leading healthcare delivery organizations like Cleveland Clinic Mayo Clinic MD Anderson and U. S. Department of Veteran Affairs. Given the current state of global healthcare there is urgency to achieve widespread adoption of this new approach. The intent of this book is to equip all healthcare delivery organizations with a guide for putting the value-based concept into practice. This book defines the practice of value-based health care as Value Management. The book explores Profesor Porter’s Value Equation (Value = Outcomes/ Cost) which is central to Value Management and provides a step-by-step process for how to calculate the components of this equation. On the outcomes side the book presents the Value Realization Framework which translates organizational mission and strategy into a comprehensive set of performance measures and contextualizes the measures for healthcare delivery. The Value Realization Framework is based on Professor Kaplan's ground-breaking Balanced Scorecard approach but specific to healthcare organizations. On the costs side the book details the Harvard endorsed time-driven activity based costing (TDABC) methodology which has proven to be a modern catalyst for defining HDO costs. Finally this book covers the need and a plan to establish a Value Management Office to lead the delivery transformation and govern operations. This book is designed in a format where any organization can read it and acquire the fundamentals and methodologies of Value Management. It is intended for healthcare delivery organizations in need of learning the specifics of achieving the implementation of value-based healthcare. | Value Management in Healthcare How to Establish a Value Management Office to Support Value-Based Outcomes in Healthcare
