Bridge of the Gods

Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland, Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanicmountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement (“Saghalie”) pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The second movement captures the beauty ofthe maiden “Loowit,” with haunting flute and English horn solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement, “Tanmahawis,” utilizes stark clusters, jagged melodic fragments, and rhythmicpercussive energy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Northwest Saga

The opening theme portrays the beauty and grandeur of the Pacific Northwest, with its majestic mountains, verdant forests, sparkling lakes and rivers that flow to the sea. To depict the lives and times of the courageous pioneers and rugged lumberjacks who helped cut a swathe into this territory by way of the Oregon Trail and other routes, three regional popular tunes of the period have been used: To the West, The Timbertown Logger, and Once More A-Lumb'ring Go.

Arkansas : Suite based on a folk song from Arkansas

The American state of Arkansas is often called ‘the natural state’ and ‘the land of opportunity.’ This piece belongs to Jacob de Haan’s series of musical montages depicting various states in the USA, including Dakota, Oregon and Virginia. Arkansas is a suite in three movements based on a well-known native American folk song. It appears as a ballade, variations and finally accompanies a jazzy rhythm. The folk song helps provide continuity throughout the three movements. A perfect addition to any concert.

Fires of Mazama

Mazama was the imposing mountain peak in southwest Oregon that erupted7000+ years ago and became the serene and beautiful present day Crater Lake. Fires of Mazama opens with bold sounds and powerful melodies before the “eruption” changes everything. Afterwards, a calm chorale leads tothe exciting final strains in this ingenious and impressive piece for beginners! Dur: 3:20

This piece was commissioned by the Dutch province of Groningen for the celebrations commemorating the liberation festivities in 1987. In the composition, the dream of a world without war is symbolized. It is the first composition in a series in which Jacob de Haan combines concert music with pop music in a style, which reminds one of film music. Later compositions in which he has reaped much success with the same formula in style are Oregon, La Storia and Utopia.

Messiah : Understanding and Performing Handel's Masterpiece

This book on Handel's Messiah reflects Helmuth Rilling's remarkable skills, both as a conductor and as an educator. Sven-David Sandström: Messiah : Helmuth Rilling gewidmet

The Messiah, by the Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström, was commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival and the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart to commemorate the Handel anniversary year 2009. In accordance with the wishes of these two institutions, the work is based on Charles Jennen’s English libretto which Handel set in his famous oratorio more than 260 years ago. Great expression and orchestral color characterize this Messiah of the 21st century, in which for Sandström modernity and euphony do not represent a contradiction corresponding to his artistic credo: “My music should be understandable on first hearing and should touch people.”

The Dorsey Brothers: 1955

The Dorsey Brothers: 1955 features 19 tracks from the Dorseys’ orchestra, recorded in Portland, Oregon in June 1955. It is perhaps the last great recording of these two swing masters, taken at the height of their all-too-brief joint revival from 1953 until their tragic deaths in 1956 and 1957. Trombonist Tommy Dorsey (1905-1956) and saxophonist Jimmy Dorsey (1904-1957) were two of the biggest names of the American Big Band era. They rose to fame with their shared studio orchestra in 1928, a brand which they successfully transferred to live performances in 1934. However, an argument over tempo shortly after led the two to split up, with both forming their own successful orchestras.
