Grandfather's Clock Variation : For Clarinet Quintet

In the 1870s, visiting American composer Henry Clay Work (1832-1884), from Connecticut, happened to stay at the George Hotel, in Piercebridge, in the North of England, and was told the story of the Jenkins brothers and the old clock. He was fascinated by the story, and using it as inspiration, composed a song which he published in 1878 after his return to the States. This song - My Grandfather?s Clock - is reputedly his own interpretation of the Piercebridge clock story, and became very famous, selling over a million copies. Japanese arranger Takao Shirikawa has produced this theme and variations, based on the famous melody, for four clarinets.

Throughout the 17-minute work, cello and piano lines constantly speed up or slow down relative to one another, whilst the violin has only one role – to accelerate throughout. The listener feels clunky gear changes, as previously reliable demarcations of time seem unsteady – even unsafe. The trio’s subtitle comes from The Corpus Clock in Cambridge, a clock that plays with exactly this perception. Completely accurate every five minutes, the clock lurches unevenly from second to second, the grinding mechanism driven by the terrifying metal insect escapement known as the ‘Chronophage’ (from the Greek meaning ‘time-eater’).

The New Bell - Die neue Glocke : Little Piano Pieces - Kleine Klavierstücke - Petites pièces pour piano

György Orbán (born 1947) is among the most frequently performed contemporary Hungarian composers. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he ''loves splashing about in tonality,'' which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he finds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifically intended for beginners. He composed close to 70 short children’s pieces for Ágnes Lakos’s four-volume Friendly Piano Tutor (EMBZ14749-14756), later published separately as Enchanted Forest (EMBZ14742). The New Bell includes a further 19 piano pieces for beginners; among others, we encounter a baby elephant now and again (perhaps paying a visit from Debussy’s Children’s Corner?) and we hear the awful clamor of a most outgoing granny’s alarm clock as well as the solemn tolling of a new church-bell. The pieces are arranged in order of difficulty and even include a few items for three hands, which may be played by a pupil with the teacher or another student.
