Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet

This publication marks the first-ever symphonic wind band edition of the Dance of the Knights, from Scene 2 Capulet's Ball of Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet. [The ballet] led to one of the most beloved dance works in the repertory and a series of famous orchestral suites... but the celebrated legacy of Romeo and Juliet belies its tortured history: It left Prokofiev broken and emerged from a period that left many of his colleages dead. (New York Times). Nathan Jones' scoring for symphonic wind band faithfully captures the magic of the original orchestraion of this famous work, which has been heard in numerous films and TV shows, including The Simpsons, Warm Machine, GoodMorning Britain and Gotham, among many others. This piece is an ideal opener or closer for intermediate to advanced band.

Vidda : Solo for Trumpet and Brass Band

I composed the song "Vidda" after I got my ultimate boy's dream fulfilled; To fly one of the Air Force's F-16 fighter jets! We flew out from Norwegian city Bodø on to the Finnmark plateau, where we flew so-called "low level" (at low altitude). It was such a great experience for me that I immediately wrote the song "Vidda" based on my experience of the trip. Here, I try to describe the meeting between the technical perfection of a machine that surpasses most of the various forces in it’s escape through the magnificent scenery passing at great speed, and the pilot who is alone with both the adventure and responsibility. The drums which start the song is meant to describes theenergy in the power of the plane, while the lonely and kind of melancholy melody from the trumpet in the beginning describes the feelings of the pilot. As the song develop, we pass both the mountains and big beautiful plateaus with g-forces quivering body. Hopefully you will share some of my experiences through this song. Have a nice flight! Per Nørgård: String Quartet No.9 - Into The Source (parts)

PrefaceThe three movements of the quartet may be perceived as three different expressions of an unstable core: an inherent unrest leads to frequent changes of direction. The first movement is full of dramatic contrasts; it is followed by a second movement, whose basic mood of meditative rest is challenged by occasional centrifugal utbursts, while the third movement takes the inherent conflicts to a higher level, contrasting material of introspective lyricism with excessively pathetic moods.The final ?way out? is a retrograde one, (back) ?into the source?: through a constant accelerando-diminuendo the piece disappears into a vanishing point. The ?into the source? of the title may be visualized as a reversed fountain-action: the broad fan-like spread of the first movement, a more coherent-solid second movement, and finally - in the third movement - a return-run, ever more vehemently, like a suction into the spring itself ?The musical motifs are varied; there are traffic-situations (which I heard!) with stomping and machine-like rhythms in different, but simultaneous tempi, and there are more abstract upwards and downwards half-tone-scales, with changing accents, creating glimpses of melodies.INTO THE SOURCE, String Quartet No. 9, was composed on a double-commission from the Orion Quartet and the Vertavo Quartet. Naturals for 'safety'.Programme NotesIn this day and age, when faced with the challenge of writing a 'Piano Concerto', e.g. a piece for symphony orchestra and an all-dominating and virtuosic solo Piano part, one has two options: either: DO, or do NOT go for it wholesale, exploiting and enjoying the conrnucopia of sonorous treasures offered by the combination of the orchestra and the 'Grand Piano'. I have opted to go for it. When writing for one of our great young international Piano stars, it would be absurd, and a waste, to do anything less and only 'nibble at the goodies'.However, the piece is not a big, clunky 'machine'. Rather it is a transparently orchestrated neo-classic (for the lack of a better work) composition in three movements, lastign approximately 25 minutes.The piece begins with a moderately paced opening, in which the Piano gradually gathers momentum and strength, beginning with the most gentle of motifs. In this movement the soloist and orchestra fo not always agree, and the vigilant listener will observe the disparity between the two. Following a swift, up-beat coda, the movement stops, almost in mid-breath, on one of the gentle Piano chords taken from the very opening.The extreme simplicity of the second movement, 'Semplice' (the opening Piano solo bears the marking: 'slightly hesitant - like a child practicing') is, after having been joined by the Vibraphone, Harp and solo Violin, suddenly violated with unprecedented brutality by the rest of the orchestra, which virtually 'lies in wait - panting to pounce'. But eventually calm and order is restored.The finale is a crazy rondo of sorts. The marking 'Avanti Risoluto' (Forward with Resolve) is a bit of an understatement. It is a full throttle, no hold barred ride - and hopefully lots of fun for everybody.         - Poul Ruders, February 2010
