This masterful work by Jay Bocook was composed for fellow South Carolinian and highly regarded educator Scott Rush, known for his accomplishments with the nationally acclaimed Wando High School band program. Employing a minimalistic approach, this dynamic piece uses layers of constantly evolving textures and rhythmic devices, while propelled throughout by an energetic underlying pulse. Sprinkled with surprises and dramatic effects, and culminating with the full force of the entire ensemble, Head Rush is a dramatic and unique addition to the repertoire for mature ensembles. In Charge was commissioned by the Home Guard Band of Eksjö to honour Thomas Samuelsson, whose efforts with the orchestra have been of great significance. He was a driving person within Swedish military music and furthermore project manager for Eksjö International Tattoo. Thomas worked at Eksjö Energy and the title of this work hints both to his occupation and his administrative leadership in the band. The first part of this concert march concentrates a lot on syncopation, while the second part is more robust with a traditional and lyrical trio part. In Charge was premiered by the Home Guard Band of Eksjö on the 22th of December 2018, conducted by Maria Sandberg.

Fostedina : De Sage van de Gouden Kap

The legend of ‘Fostedina and the golden hood’ is about the imprisonment of archbishop Willibrord (658-739), ‘Apostle to the Frisians’, and several dozen Danes converted to Christianity. The young woman Fostedina took pity on them and liberated them. As a punishment, she had to stand the entire day in the market square with a crown of thorns on her head. The thorns left severe scars, but on her wedding day she was given a golden cap that covered her scars: the later ear iron.

Guardians of the Waves

Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.

Voyages Extraordinaires

A work for orchestra commissioned by Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The composer writes "I have borrowed the title 'Voyages extraordinaires' from the writer Jules Verne and his famous novel series depicting fantastic or in reality impossible journeys. The title seemed fitting as my work is intended as fantastical musical voyages on which the listener encounters new worlds of sound through recurring orchestral transformations. I see the work somewhat as a tribute to how art has the abilities to transcend the limits of life. Some years ago I composed a horn trio, 'Diagonal Musik' (2017), inspired by the Swedish artist Olle Baertling. Baertling’s paintings consist of large, brighttriangular shapes, and although the lines gradually approach one another, the intersecting point is often placed outside the frame. Consequently, the spectator will try to complete the angle in their own head. In my horn trio, I wanted to transfer this to music: the lines that gradually approach each other but rarely meet, except perhaps in the listener’s head. In 'Voyage Extraordinaires' I have tried to develop these techniques even further, this time for orchestral forces, and combine them with the magical transformations, an important structural element of the piece. The fantastic journeys also refer to travels in our own imagination: what we believe and picture in our mind. From Russia with Love : Medley of Three Russian Love Songs

A characteristic of many Russian folksongs is the emotion that they contain - sometimes exceptionally fierce, sometimes, in contrast, resigned and melancholic. This makes the music captivating and gives it its special, distinctive atmosphere. The same can also be said for From Russia with Love, in which Roland Kernen has made use of three beautiful Russian love songs. In the cheerful and stirring Kalinka, the singer tells of a girl whom he fell head over heals in love with, so much so that she is always on his mind. Lutshje Bulo is the story of a man who wants to break up with his girlfriend and in Otschi Tschornije attention is focused on a dangerous woman who can seduce many menwith her piercing black eyes.

Poul Ruders: Break-Dance (Parts)

Break-Dance is an obvious next of kin to the two Clarinet trios Vox In Rama and Tattoo For Three. This piece, however, combines the roaring despair of the first trio with the twisted rhythmical display of the latter. The title, of course, is a reference to the modern street-dance electric boogie, but the very music itself takes the naming most literally indeed: formally and rhythmically, after a straightforward head-on opening, it breaks into isolated, jagged fragments, winding up in a bouncing piano cadenza. Albeit not an obvious piano concerto, the piano part hovers in the front line, the same way the horizontal guy, ringing himself on the pavement, is doubtless an eye-catcher to passers-by. The springy 'body-language' that kicks off the piece suddenly stiffens and freezes into hard-edged blocks and the real 'dance of breaks' emerges into focus. Break-dance is commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff and Spectrum. Arranged for 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, and Piano.
