For companies to be successful, the management of an organization needs to understand how competence evolves and how it can be utilized and linked to the organization’s goals. When executive managers understand this, there is a higher probability that the people working in the organization will be more satisfied with their working situation. Satisfaction increases because competence will likely be central in the organization, with focus on motivating people to develop new competence, healthy internal mobility, and organizational learning. Positively managing competence in most cases leads to a win–win situation for the company and the individual. This book describes how we as individuals, as well as organizations, can be efficient in the development and utilization of competence. It takes two perspectives of competence and connects them in a project-intensive and knowledge-intensive context. The first perspective is the "Lemon," which focuses on individual competence and the role of organizational culture. The Lemon framework takes the concept of competence based on knowledge and experience and explains how a person can apply knowledge and experience to different contexts. It changes the concept of competence from being static to being agile and dynamic. The second perspective of competence is the "Loop," which models how organizations can manage not only to the benefit of organizational strategies and goals but also to an individual’s future career. The Lemon and the Loop are the basic tools to make competence and performance management agile and effective. This book presents practical ways to acquire new knowledge and skills. One method is REPI (Reflection, Elaboration, Practicing/Participation, and Investigation), which can be used for training, coaching, competence development, agile performance management, and much more. Readers of the book are given new insight into the concept of competence and how both people and organizations ca

Constructing (in)competence - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Constructing (in)competence - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Competence and incompetence are constructs that emerge in the social milieu of everyday life. Individuals are continually making and revising judgments about each other''s abilities as they interact. The flexible, situated view of competence conveyed by the research of the authors in this volume is a departure from the way that competence is usually thought about in the fields of communication disabilities and education. In the social constructivist view, competence is not a fixed mass, residing within an individual, or a fixed judgment, defined externally. Rather, it is variable, sensitive to what is going on in the here and now, and coconstructed by those present. Constructions of competence are tied to evaluations implicit in the communication of the participants as well as to explicit evaluations of how things are going. The authors address the social construction of competence in a variety of situations: engaging in therapy for communication and other disorders, working and living with people with disabilities, speaking a second language, living with deafness, and giving and receiving instruction. Their studies focus on adults and children, including those with disabilities (aphasia, traumatic brain injury, augmentative systems users), as they go about managing their lives and identities. They examine the all-important context in which participants make competence judgments, assess the impact of implicit judgments and formal diagnoses, and look at the types of evaluations made during interaction. This book makes an argument all helping professionals need to hear: institutional, clinical, and social practices promoting judgments must be changed to practices that are more positive and empowering.

Intercultural Communication Competence - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Intercultural Communication Competence - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Published in cooperation with the Speech Communication Association Division on International and Intercultural Communication "The editors should be commended, as the volume presents the latest thinking and research from scholars within the intercultural field and, more broadly, from the speech communication discipline. For those interested in learning more about various communication-based theories and approaches to the study of intercultural competence I highly recommend they take a close look at this book. I found the introductory chapter by Koester, Wiseman, and Sanders extremely valuable in integrating the various perspectives represented by the authors. Their discussion of the starting points for the study of the intercultural communication competence. . . was very well written. Part I focused on conceptual issues, and it includes and excellent review article by Judith Martin about the various approaches taken in the study of intercultural communication competence. William Gudykunst′s anxiety/uncertainty management chapter is perhaps the clearest and most practical extension to date of his extensive theoretical research program on uncertainty and anxiety reduction processes. It is tightly written with examples and elaborated explanations of key constructs that relate to intercultural effectiveness. I found this chapter [Myron Lustig and Brian Spitzberg′s methodological concerns relevant to the study of intercultural communication competence] to be one of the most targeted analyses of research methods for examining communication competence within the distinctly different intercultural arena. This chapter provides a blueprint for research design decision making on studying the difficult phenomenon of intercultural communication competence. . . .Donal Carbaugh′s ethnographic approach for identifying the verbal means and meanings in social interaction is exciting, creative, insightful, and practical. I highly recommend Intercultural Communication Competence for a graduate-level theory course in intercultural communication and, more generally, for any course that focuses on cross-cultural interaction. Further, this book would be a welcome addition for a graduate-level intercultural research course.Overall, Wiseman and Koester have edited a high-quality intercultural book that focuses on a complex communication phenomenon. I urge anyone interested in this important topic to read Intercultural Communication Competence. --Mitchell R. Hammer, The American University, International Journal of Intercultural Relations Contemporary societies have witnessed the greatest migration of human populations in recorded history. Accordingly, interactions among citizens of these societies are becoming increasingly intercultural. By gathering the most current research, theories, and methods from the leading scholars in the field, Intercultural Communication Competence is the state-of-the-art study on intercultural communication competence and effectiveness. Part I analyzes the conceptual decisions made in intercultural communication competence research by examining decisions regarding conceptualization, operationalization, research design, and sampling. In Part Two, the contributors present four different theoretical orientations while illustrating how each person′s theoretical bias directs the focus of research. The essays in the final section examine both qualitative and quantitative approaches to intercultural communication competence research. With exemplary conceptual and empirical studies, scholars, researchers, teachers, and students alike will find a wealth of information in this tightly edited book.
