A provocative and wide-ranging exploration of wax as cultural metaphorLondon, 1921. The world’s greatest wax sculptor watches in horror as flames consume his museum and melt his uncannily lifelike creations. Twelve years later, he opens a wax museum in New York. Crippled, disfigured, and driven mad by the fire, he resorts to body snatching and murder to populate his displays, preserving the bodies in wax. “In a thousand years you will be as lovely as you are now,” he assures one victim. In The Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933), director Michael Curtiz perfectly captures the macabre essence of realistic wax figures that have excited the darker aspects of the public’s imagination ever since Madame Tussaud established her famous museum in London in 1802. Artists, too, have been fascinated by wax sculptures, seeing in them—and in the unique properties of wax itself—an eerie metaphoric power with which to address sexual anxiety, fears of mortality, and other morbid subjects. In Waxworks, Michelle E. Bloom explores the motif of the wax figure in European and American literature and art. In particular, she connects the myth of Pygmalion to the obsession with wax statues of women in the nineteenth-century fetishization of prostitutes and female corpses and as depicted in such “wax fictions” as Dickens’s The Old Curiosity Shop (1841). Filmmakers, too, have sought inspiration from wax museums, and Bloom analyzes works from the silent era to such waxwork-themed Hollywood horror films as Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) and Mad Love (1935). Bringing her discussion to the present, Bloom examines the work of contemporary artists who use the medium of wax in ways never imagined by Madame Tussaud. As extravagant new wax museums open in Las Vegas, Times Square, and Paris, Waxworks offers a provocative cultural history of this enduring—and disturbing—art form.

Mr Percy: Portrait Modeller in Coloured Wax: The Miniatures and Tableaux of Samuel Percy - Ruth Ord Hume - Bog - ACC Art Books - Plusbog.dk

"Erudite, while still being fun to read." — Professor Tim Neild , physiologist and medical educator "A triumph of Social History in the Georgian period." — Dr Nigel Cooke FRCP , physician and ceramic historian This is the first biography and reference book dedicated to Samuel Percy, a modeller who produced an impressive oeuvre of wax portraits and tableaux in the mid-to-late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Based in part on the author''s own substantial collection of Percy waxes, this book follows Percy from his beginnings in Dublin, at the Dublin Society Drawing Schools, working with the famed statuary John Van Nost; to England, where he journeyed from town to town, putting advertisements in regional newspapers. These revealing advertisements have been gathered here for the first time, in order to track his travels. Whether taking the likeness of Princess Charlotte of Wales, or falling victim to a highway robber in Birmingham, these fragments of Percy''s history paint a fascinating picture of his life as a wandering artisan. As well as a chronological narrative of Percy''s life, this book commits an entire chapter to an area of his work that has never been studied before: his miniature tableaux. These portray various subjects, both religious and secular, from Christ on the Cross to playing children. They are catalogued in an appendix, and almost thirty are illustrated. Based entirely on original research, Mr. Percy: Portrait Modeller in Coloured Wax features over a hundred illustrations, celebrating both Percy''s accomplishments and the works of other modellers for comparison.

Understanding Dialogical Leadership - Rens J. P. Van Loon - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Understanding Dialogical Leadership - Rens J. P. Van Loon - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Understanding Dialogical Leadership emphasizes the power of dialogue, self-reflection, and shared decision-making in navigating the complexities of collaborative leadership, especially in the face of evolving challenges in modern life. The book underscores the importance of being conscious and open to diverse perspectives. The four pillars of dialogical leadership, which form the foundation of its philosophy, focus on flexible application of internal and external dialogues, self-awareness in leadership roles, proactive interchange of influence styles, and creating conditions for meaningful dialogues. A dialogue approach can provide answers to critical questions and wicked issues in the contemporary world, such as the balance between intellect and wisdom in the age of advanced technologies. The book positions dialogue as a dynamic force that brings people together, fostering an environment where valuable insights can emerge. The authors intertwine the ideas of Yuval Harari, David Bohm, Kenneth Gergen, Hubert Hermans, and other leadership authorities, highlighting the importance of relational reflection, with the practice of self-observation, meta-consciousness, and meditation. The objective is to create a collaborative and empowering environment that fosters innovation, trust, and the well-being of others. Transcending traditional leadership models by acknowledging the need for adaptability, self-awareness, and open communication, and including a chapter on dialogical leadership and artificial intelligence, this book encourages leaders to engage in conversations that bridge diverse perspectives and foster a deeper understanding of the self in a relational world and the complex challenges faced by humanity. It will appeal to leaders, coaches, and HR professionals, as well as those studying and looking to develop leadership.

Insect-Plant Biology - Joop J. A. Van Loon - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Insect-Plant Biology - Joop J. A. Van Loon - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Half of all insect species are dependent on living plant tissues, consuming about 10% of plant annual production in natural habitats and an even greater percentage in agricultural systems, despite sophisticated control measures. Plants possess defences that are effective against almost all herbivorous insect species. Host-plant specialization, observed in over 80% of these animals, appears to be an effective adaptation to breach these defence systems. The mechanisms underlying plant defence to invading herbivores on the one side, and insect adaptations to utilize plants for nutrition, defence and shelter on the other, are the main subjects of this book. In the case of plants exposed to insect herbivores, they include the activation of defence systems in order to minimize damage, as well as the emission of chemical signals that may attract natural enemies of the invading herbivores and may be exploited by neighbouring plants that mount defences as well. For insects, they include complex bevioural adaptations and their underlying sensory systems (with their implications for learning and nutritional plasticity), as well as the endocrinological aspects of life cycle synchronization with host-plant phenology.Insect-Plant Biology discusses the operation of these mechanisms at the molecular and organismal levels and explicitly puts these in the context of both ecological interactions and evolutionary processes. In doing so, it uncovers the highly intricate antagonistic as well as mutualistic interactions that have evolved between plants and insects. The book concludes with a chapter on the application of our knowledge of insect-plant interactions to agricultural production. This multidisciplinary approach will appeal to students in biology, agricultural entomology, ecology, and indeed anyone interested in the principles underlying the relationships between the two largest groups of organisms on earth: plants and insects.
