Bands of Sisters - Jill M. Sullivan - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

On Saturday, November 14, 1944, radio listeners heard an enthusiastic broadcast announcer describe something they had never heard before: Women singing the "Marines' Hymn" instead of the traditional all-male United States Marine Band. The singers were actually members of its sister organization, The Marine Corps Women's Reserve Band of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Today, few remember these all-female military bands because only a small number of their performances were broadcast or pressed to vinyl. But, as Jill Sullivan argues in Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women's Military Bands during World War II, these gaps in the historical record can hardly be treated as the measure of their success. The novelty of these bands—initially employed by the U.S. military to support bond drives—drew enough spectators for the bands to be placed on tour, raising money for the war and boosting morale. The women, once discharged at the war's end, refused to fade into post-war domesticity. Instead, the strong bond fostered by youthful enthusiasm and the rare opportunity to serve in the military while making professional caliber music would come to last some 60 years. Based on interviews with over 70 surviving band members, Bands of Sisters tells the tale of this remarkable period in the history of American women. Sullivan covers the history of these ensembles, tracing accounts such as the female music teachers who would leave their positions to become professional musicians—no easy matter for female instrumentalists of the pre-war era. Sullivan further traces how some band members would later be among the first post-war music therapists based on their experience working with medical personnel in hospitals to treat injured soldiers. The opportunities presented by military service inevitably promoted new perspectives on what women could accomplish outside of the home, resulting in a lifetime of lasting relationships that would inspire future generations of musicians.

The Science of Long-Term Weight Loss - Laurie A. Milliken - Bog - Human Kinetics Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The Science of Long-Term Weight Loss provides a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to help clients and patients achieve long-term weight loss success. Taking into consideration decades of research from experts in the field, it embraces a multidisciplinary approach and use of the complexity science approach to better understand the issues surrounding long-term weight loss. The current obesity epidemic, which began in the 1980s and continues into the 21st century, has significantly affected the U.S. population and communities throughout the world. The Science of Long-Term Weight Loss counters the public health crisis with long-term weight loss solutions modified for individual lifestyles (rather than strategies that only offer evidence for short-term success). The text covers a broad range of topics, including food addiction, exercise resistance, night eating syndrome, emotional regulation, continuous care, problem-solving, accountability, and group support. Throughout the text, case studies offer a glimpse into the struggles and successes involved with long-term weight loss. Putting It Into Perspective and Expert Perspective sidebars provide additional context to complex topics, and Do You Know? elements call out important information for readers. Each chapter contains objectives and summaries to aid in knowledge retention. The Science of Long-Term Weight Loss begins by discussing the origins of the obesity epidemic and theoretical strategies to support weight loss. The authors use the complexity science approach to explain the factors that contribute to the prevalence of obesity, such as genetics and public policy. The text goes on to explore behavioral influences on body composition, such as physical activity and nutritional intake. Sustainable, long-term weight loss solutions and the prevention of weight regain are studied in depth, and societal factors such as the environment and food production are considered. Health care practitioners will find alternative approaches to weight loss that can be customized to the individual as well as practical advice to achieve client goals. As a resource for understanding the multifaceted issues surrounding obesity and weight loss, this book will be invaluable to researchers and practitioners in fields studying or encountering obesity, including registered dietitians and nutritionists, as well as fitness and health professionals working with clients or patients who need long-term strategies for weight management. The Weight of Reasons - Chris Tucker - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In his comprehensive guide to weighing reasons, Chris Tucker explains how to weigh reasons well, from daily choices to complex ethical puzzles. There are two central claims in the book. The first concerns the weights of reasons, namely Weight Pluralism, the idea that reasons have more than one weight value and these values are not always equal. A reason''s justifying weight is how well it makes an act permissible. A reason''s requiring weight is how well it makes a permissible act required. For instance, the self-interested reasons that make it permissible to go out for dinner one night generally do not also make it impermissible or wrong to stay home instead. This fact is to be explained, Tucker argues, by holding that self-interested reasons have more justifying than requiring weight. The second central claim concerns weighing reasons. The most natural model for weighing reasons is Single Scale: the idea that reasons are weighed on a single two-sided scale. Since our reasons to eat out have more justifying weight than requiring weight, Single Scale distorts how those reasons work. If one were to put the reasons to go out on the left pan and the reasons to stay home on the right pan, and the reasons to go out are weightier, then Single Scale incorrectly entails that you are required to eat out--i.e., eating out is permissible/okay and staying home is impermissible/wrong. This verdict is incorrect because the self-interested reasons that make it permissible to go out to eat tonight generally do not also make it wrong to stay home instead. To properly represent such reasons, Tucker replaces Single Scale with Dual Scale, which is the idea that reasons are weighed on two scales rather than one.The book also addresses what the general issue of weighing reasons is, whether they have commending weight, whether weight values are context sensitive, how to tell what the weights of reasons are, how reasons for are related to reasons against, and how the weights of reasons aggregate.

Elastic Waves in Anisotropic Laminates - Z. C. Xi - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE) plays an increasingly important role in determining properties and detecting defects in composite materials, and the analysis of wave behavior is crucial to effectively using NDE techniques. The complexity of elastic wave propagation in anisotropic media has led to a reliance on numerical methods of analysis-methods that are often quite time-consuming and whose results yield even further difficulties in extracting explicit phenomena and characteristics. Innovative and insightful, Elastic Waves in Anisotropic Laminates establishes a set of high-performance, analytical-numerical methods for elastic wave analysis of anisotropic layered structures. The treatment furnishes a comprehensive introduction, sound theoretical development, and applications to smart materials, plates, and shells. The techniques, detailed in both the time and frequency domains, include methods that combine the finite element method (FEM) with the Fourier transform approach and the strip element method (SEM). These -methods can also be used for expediently finding the Green''s function for anisotropic laminates useful for inverse problems related to wave propagation, and methods for inverse analyses, including conjugate gradient methods, and genetic algorithms are also introduced. The text is complemented by many examples generated using software codes based on the techniques developed. Filled with charts and illustrations, Elastic Waves in Anisotropic Laminates is accessible even to readers from non-engineering backgrounds and offers a unique opportunity to discover methods that can lead to an understanding of the dynamic characteristics and wave motion behaviors of advanced composite materials.
