Dynamics of Deflagrations and Reactive Systems: Heterogeneous Combustion - A.a. Borisov - Bog - American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics -

The four companion volumes on Dynamics of Deflagrations and Reactive Systems and Dynamics of Detonations and Explosions present 91 of the149 papers given at the Twelfth International Colloquium on the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems (ICDERS) held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor during July 1989. Four volumes: Dynamics of Deflagrations and Reactive Systems: Flames (Volume 131) and Dynamics of Deflagrations and Reactive Systems: Heterogeneous Combustion (Volume 132) span a broad area, encompassing the processes of coupling the exothermic energy release with the fluid dynamics occurring in any combustion process. Dynamics of Detonations and Explosions: Detonations (Volume 133) and Dynamics of Detonations and Explosions: Explosion Phenomena (Volume 134) principally address the rate processes of energy deposition in a compressible medium and the concurrent nonsteady flow as it typically occurs in explosion phenomena. In this volume, Dynamics of Detonations and Explosions: Detonations, the papers have been arranged into chapters on gaseous detonations, detonation initiation and transmission, nonideal detonations and boundary effects, and multiphase detonations. Although the brevity of this preface does not permit the editors to do justice to all papers, we offer the following highlights of some of the especially noteworthy contributions.

Analytical Thermodynamics - Dongqing Li - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This second edition presents an enriched and expanded exploration of the fundamental principles of thermodynamics tailored for graduate-level studies. Drawing on over three decades of academic teaching experience, the author has refined the content, making it more accessible and comprehensive. Chapter 1 has been restructured for clarity, delineating "Legendre Transformation" and "Thermodynamic Potentials" into separate sections, while the treatment of "Chemical Potentials" has been significantly augmented, encompassing two-component ideal gas mixtures and a re-derivation of chemical potentials for dilute solutions. Additionally, the section on thermodynamic stability now boasts enhanced explanations and illustrative figures. Chapter 2 introduces a groundbreaking section, "Electrolyte Solution in Electric Field as a Non-Uniform System," providing fresh insights into unexplored realms. Chapter 3, now enriched with several new sections, delves into topics such as "Contact Angles on Heterogeneous Surfaces and Rough Surfaces," "Elastic Liquid-Fluid Interface," "Curvature Effect on Surface Tension," "Solute Effect on Equilibrium Pressure," and "Heterogeneous Bubble Nucleation in a Dilute Solution." Chapter 4 features new elucidations and discussions aimed at bolstering comprehension, while the entirely new Chapter 5 offers solutions to selected homework and exam questions, adding a practical dimension to the theoretical framework. This edition, encompassing approximately 50% new content, expands the book by 131 pages, rendering it an even more invaluable resource for professors instructing advanced thermodynamics and graduate students delving into this intricate subject matter.

The Galitzin Quartets of Beethoven - Daniel K. L. Chua - Bog - Princeton University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Galitzin Quartets of Beethoven - Daniel K. L. Chua - Bog - Princeton University Press - Plusbog.dk

This study is an analysis of the first three of Beethoven''s late quartets, Opp. 127, 132, and 130, commissioned by Prince Nikolai Galitzin. The five late quartets, usually considered as a group, were written in the same period as the Missa solemnis and the Ninth Symphony, and are among the composer''s most profound musical statements. Daniel K. L. Chua believes that of the five quartets the three that he studies trace a process of disintegration, whereas the last two, Opp. 131 and 135, reintegrate the language that Beethoven himself had destabilized.Through analyses that unearth peculiar features characteristic of the surface and of the deeper structures of the music, Chua interprets the "Galitzin" quartets as radical critiques of both music and society, a view first proposed by Theodore Adorno. From this perspective, the quartets necessarily undo the act of analysis as well, forcing the analytical traditions associated with Schenker and Schoenberg to break up into an eclectic mixture of techniques. Analysis itself thus becomes problematic and has to move in a dialectical and paradoxical fashion in order to trace Beethoven''s logic of disintegration. The result is a new way of reading these works that not only reflects the preoccupations of the German Romantics of that time and the poststructuralists of today, but also opens a discussion of cultural, political, and philosophical issues.Originally published in 1995.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Prime Ministers in Central and Eastern Europe - Corinna Kroeber - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Prime Ministers in Central and Eastern Europe - Corinna Kroeber - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Prime Ministers (PMs) are the most influential, powerful, and visible politicians in parliamentary democracies. Their prominent role has been increasing in Western democracies due to the ''presidentialization of politics''. But is this also true for new democracies, such as those in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)? As politics in CEE has been characterized by high personalization, weak voter-party linkages, and strong media influence of political leaders, prime-ministerial performance may be even more important for the functioning of parliamentary democracy in those countries. At the same time, conventional wisdom suggests that prime ministers in CEE perform weakly because they lack political experience and operate in an extraordinarily difficult context, but this assumption has not been systematically examined. To close this research gap, this book presents a new conceptual approach to measuring prime-ministerial performance and offers a novel dataset of 131 cabinets in eleven CEE countries between 1990 and 2018. The comparative analyses of this data reveal that the political experience of post-communist prime ministers varies considerably-they range from politically inexperienced outsiders to insiders with long-standing careers in parliament, government, and party leadership. At the same time, multivariate analyses of the quantitative data and qualitative cases demonstrate that variations in the careers, contexts, and performance of prime ministers are systematically connected. In this way, the book not only qualifies conventional assumptions about prime ministers in CEE but also substantiates the theoretical relationship between their careers, contexts, and performance. Prime Ministers in Central and Eastern Europe thus contributes to an enhanced understanding of the functioning of post-communist democracies and provides new insights for scholarly work engaging with political leadership.Comparative Politics is a series for researchers, teachers, and students of political science that deals with contemporary government and politics. Global in scope, books in the series are characterized by a stress on comparative analysis and strong methodological rigour. The series is published in association with the European Consortium for Political Research. For more information visit: www.ecprnet.eu.The series is edited by Nicole Bolleyer, Chair of Comparative Political Science, Geschwister Scholl Institut, LMU Munich and Jonathan Slapin, Professor of Political Institutions and European Politics, Department of Political Science, University of Zurich.
