Buttoned Up - Erynn Masi De Casanova - Bog - Cornell University Press - Plusbog.dk

Who is today’s white-collar man? The world of work has changed radically since The Man in the Gray Flannel Sui t and other mid-twentieth-century investigations of corporate life and identity. Contemporary jobs are more precarious, casual Friday has become an institution, and telecommuting blurs the divide between workplace and home. Gender expectations have changed, too, with men’s bodies increasingly exposed in the media and scrutinized in everyday interactions. In Buttoned Up , based on interviews with dozens of men in three U.S. cities with distinct local dress cultures—New York, San Francisco, and Cincinnati—Erynn Masi de Casanova asks what it means to wear the white collar now. Despite the expansion of men’s fashion and grooming practices, the decrease in formal dress codes, and the relaxing of traditional ideas about masculinity, white-collar men feel constrained in their choices about how to embody professionalism. They strategically embrace conformity in clothing as a way of maintaining their gender and class privilege. Across categories of race, sexual orientation and occupation, men talk about "blending in" and "looking the part" as they aim to keep their jobs or pursue better ones. These white-collar workers’ accounts show that greater freedom in work dress codes can, ironically, increase men’s anxiety about getting it wrong and discourage them from experimenting with their dress and appearance.

All this is your World - Anne E. Gorsuch - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

All this is your World - Anne E. Gorsuch - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

In the Khrushchev era, Soviet citizens were newly encouraged to imagine themselves exploring the medieval towers of Tallinn''s Old Town, relaxing on the Romanian Black Sea coast, even climbing the Eiffel Tower. By the mid 1960s, hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens each year crossed previously closed Soviet borders to travel abroad. All this is your World explores the revolutionary integration of the Soviet Union into global processes of cultural exchange in which a de-Stalinizing Soviet Union increasingly, if anxiously, participated in the transnational circulation of people, ideas, and items. Anne E. Gorsuch examines what it meant to be "Soviet" in a country no longer defined as Stalinist. All this is your World is situated at the intersection of a number of topics of scholarly and popular interest: the history of tourism and mobility; the cultural history of international relations, specifically the Cold War; the history of the Soviet Union after Stalin. It also offers a new perspective on our view of the European continent as a whole by probing the Soviet Union''s relationship with both eastern and western Europe using archival materials from Russia, Estonia, Hungary, Great Britain, and the United States. Beginning with a domestic tour of the Soviet Union in late Stalinism, the book moves outwards in concentric circles to consider travel to the inner abroad of Estonia, to the near abroad of eastern Europe, and to the capitalist West, finally returning home again with a discussion of Soviet films about tourism.

The Political Economy of Bureaucracy - Steven Richardson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Political Economy of Bureaucracy - Steven Richardson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Political Economy of Bureaucracy applies Public Choice theory and a complex systems view of government institutions to analyze policy implementation as an economic process. It addresses the common and vexing question of why managing federal agencies for results is so difficult by challenging traditional assumptions of institutional design and policy analysis. Using creative methods that focus on relationships that constrain the choices of executives and managers in a political hierarchy, the author reveals control and coordination as goals that are imperfectly achieved and often conflicting with one another. Despite decades of intense study, serious reform efforts and impressive technological advances, the U.S. government remains a typical bureaucracy that fails to meet citizens’ expectations. Clearly, policy analysis is missing something. The problem may rest with "machine" models of government. Rules, especially those governing expenditures, are assumed to be feasible and effective. Analysis of the federal government as a complex system of relationships between semi-autonomous agents helps explain the disconnect between policy and results. The solution is to roll back micro-management of ends and means; policymakers should focus on objectives and facilitate implementation by selectively relaxing constraints that prevent experimentation needed to determine the most effective methods. This book devotes unusual attention to the interaction between executive and legislative branches of government and between political appointees and career civil servants. Most studies of government policy take existing institutional structure for granted. Different conclusions emerge from this analysis by virtue of the systems view that accepts status quo hierarchies but questions the effectiveness of the rules that govern policy implementation. This book will be of interest to postgraduates and researchers focussing on Economic Theory, Public Choice, Institutional Economics and Political Science, as well as to those working in the public sector interested in Public Administration, Public Policy, and Organizational Behavior.

Time-Inconsistent Control Theory with Finance Applications - Agatha Murgoci - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Time-Inconsistent Control Theory with Finance Applications - Agatha Murgoci - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book is devoted to problems of stochastic control and stopping that are time inconsistent in the sense that they do not admit a Bellman optimality principle. These problems are cast in a game-theoretic framework, with the focus on subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium strategies. The general theory is illustrated with a number of finance applications. In dynamic choice problems, time inconsistency is the rule rather than the exception. Indeed, as Robert H. Strotz pointed out in his seminal 1955 paper, relaxing the widely used ad hoc assumption of exponential discounting gives rise to time inconsistency. Other famous examples of time inconsistency include mean-variance portfolio choice and prospect theory in a dynamic context. For such models, the very concept of optimality becomes problematic, as the decision maker''s preferences change over time in a temporally inconsistent way. In this book, a time-inconsistent problem is viewed as a non-cooperative game between the agent''s current and future selves, with the objective of finding intrapersonal equilibria in the game-theoretic sense. A range of finance applications are provided, including problems with non-exponential discounting, mean-variance objective, time-inconsistent linear quadratic regulator, probability distortion, and market equilibrium with time-inconsistent preferences. Time-Inconsistent Control Theory with Finance Applications offers the first comprehensive treatment of time-inconsistent control and stopping problems, in both continuous and discrete time, and in the context of finance applications. Intended for researchers and graduate students in the fields of finance and economics, it includes a review of the standard time-consistent results, bibliographical notes, as well as detailed examples showcasing time inconsistency problems. For the reader unacquainted with standard arbitrage theory, an appendix provides a toolbox of material needed for the book.

After Critique - Mitchum (visiting Assistant Professor Of English Huehls - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

After Critique - Mitchum (visiting Assistant Professor Of English Huehls - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

After Critique identifies an ontological turn in contemporary U.S. fiction that distinguishes our current literary moment from both postmodernism and so-called post-postmodernism. This turn to ontology takes many forms, but in general After Critique highlights a body of literature--work from Colson Whitehead, Uzodinma Iweala, Karen Yamasthia, Helena Viramontes, Percival Everett, Mat Johnson, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Tom McCarthy--that favors presence over absence, being over meaning, and connection over reference. These authors'' interest in producing literary value ontologically rather than representationally stems from their sense that neoliberalism''s capacious grasp on contemporary language and discourse--its ability to control both sides of a conceptual debate or argument--has made it nearly impossible to write beyond neoliberalism''s grip. This is particularly distressing for authors invested in contemporary politics as neoliberalism renders any number of political problems circularly undecidable. Taking up four different political themes--human rights, the relation between public and private space, racial justice, and environmentalism--After Critique suggests that the ontological forms emerging in contemporary U.S. fiction articulate a version of politics that might successfully evade neoliberal appropriation. This is a politics which replaces critique and its reliance on representation with ontology and its ever-shifting configurations and assemblages.

International Trade Policy Formation: Theory And Politics - Wolfgang Mayer - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

International Trade Policy Formation: Theory And Politics - Wolfgang Mayer - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Over the last four decades, the direction of research on international trade policy formation has been significantly influenced by Wolfgang Mayer's contributions to both the positive and normative theory of international trade and, in particular, to the political economy of actual policy formation. This volume consists of a collection of Mayer's original articles, selected with the objective to further facilitate the study and advancement of the theory of trade policy formation.Part I of this book deals with the pure theory of international trade, as the theoretical underpinning for the formation of trade policies. Specifically, it explores the robustness of the Heckscher-Ohlin framework and its two core propositions - the Stolper-Samuelson and Rybczynski theorems - by relaxing its underlying assumptions in four ways: limiting the inter-industry mobility of factors of production in the short run; allowing for industry economies of scale; introducing uncertainty of commodity prices; and endogenizing a country's supply of labor.Part II addresses issues related to first-best trade policies which had gained prominence during the period of multilateral trade liberalization under the auspices of the GATT, such as: the scope and limits of negotiated tariff agreements; first-best policy justifications for import restrictions and export promotions; and the use of import-quality standards as a substitute for tariffs.Part III explores the political economy of trade policy formation. It is a response to the observation that, in spite of wide agreement on a country's welfare-maximizing policies, they continue to deviate quite markedly from actually adopted policies. The models of Part III account for the political environment in which governments operate, with particular emphasis on majority voting by individuals with heterogeneous policy preferences.Part IV introduces a political-economy approach to explain the mixed success of conditional assistance programs, as designed by International Financial Institutions (IFIs). It calls for explicit incentives to motivate assistance-receiving governments to reform their economies when interest groups are powerful and IFIs have limited information on the competence and willingness of governments to implement reforms.

American Graphic - Rebecca B. Clark - Bog - Stanford University Press - Plusbog.dk

American Graphic - Rebecca B. Clark - Bog - Stanford University Press - Plusbog.dk

What do we really mean when we call something "graphic"? In American Graphic, Rebecca Clark examines the "graphic" as a term tellingly at odds with itself. On the one hand, it seems to evoke the grotesque; on the other hand, it promises the geometrically streamlined in the form of graphs, diagrams, and user interfaces. Clark's innovation is to ask what happens when the same moment in a work of literature is graphic in both ways at once. Her answer suggests the graphic turn in contemporary literature is intimately implicated in the fraught dynamics of identification. As Clark reveals, this double graphic indexes the unseemliness of a lust—in our current culture of information—for cool epistemological mastery over the bodies of others. Clark analyzes the contemporary graphic along three specific axes: the ethnographic, the pornographic, and the infographic. In each chapter, Clark's explication of the double graphic reads a canonical author against literary, visual and/or performance works by Black and/or female creators. Pairing works by Edgar Allan Poe, Vladimir Nabokov, and Thomas Pynchon with pieces by Mat Johnson, Kara Walker, Fran Ross, Narcissister, and Teju Cole, Clark tests the effects and affects of the double graphic across racialized and gendered axes of differences. American Graphic forces us to face how closely and uncomfortably yoked together disgust and data have become in our increasingly graph-ick world.

Occupational Health and Social Estrangement in China - Wing Chung Ho - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

Occupational Health and Social Estrangement in China - Wing Chung Ho - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

This book examines the experiences of individuals suffering from occupational diseases in contemporary China. It illustrates how the experience of most Chinese sick workers can be understood as examples of Agamben’s notion of homo sacer – the ultimate biopolitical subject whose life is located within a domain of ‘double ambivalence’ in which they are constantly and disturbingly caught in-between the public and private, the productive and unproductive, and the culturally normative and the culturally deviant. The study looks at two of the most common occupational diseases in China – pneumoconiosis and heavy metal poisoning. Through a corpus of qualitative, ethnographic data solicited from one hundred individuals, this study details the experiences of four different groups of employees – battery workers, gemstone and jewellery workers, Japanese mat workers, and coalminers – as well as their family members, non-governmental organization workers, and healthcare and legal professionals in Guangdong, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Beijing, and Hong Kong.Covering a wide range of issues related to occupational disease in China, this book focuses on the lived experiences of occupationally sick workers at the actor-power interface. Through their stories as well as the descriptions of their life-worlds and power relations they are living with, this book aims to shed light on how the socially marginalized encounter and understand domination in their everyday life in China, now and in the foreseeable future.
