First Published in 1980, London Patidars presents the case study of the Patidars, a landowning caste from the Indian state of Gujarat, in London. Patidars being the landowning caste has taken over much of the ideology of the merchant castes. This ‘merchant ideal’ is a central part of their self-image. It is an incitement to initiative in business and to some extent their actual economic behaviour does reflect the ideal. But the cases studied do not all conform to this ideal, and they pose questions: How does this particular type of ethnic boundary relate to the opportunities of the individual Patidar? Why and how is this boundary maintained? Harald Tambs-Lyche concludes that the form given to the ethnic boundary is advantageous to many Patidars but not to all in the same degree. This raises problems which potentially could change the present pattern. Other potential problems relate to their relationship with the English. As successful merchants they risk becoming objects of envy like, formerly, the Jewish community. This book is a must read for scholars of ethnic and race relations and sociology.

Medieval authors seemingly did not devote many pages to the question of textual variation, certainly because they had little interest in the question of how individual hadiths were historically formed, yet contemporary researchers have shown interest in the issue of textual variation in hadith. They agree that many hadiths were reformulated since their initial circulation and aim to trace the process of reformulation with regard to individual hadiths. Methodologically, the most successful is the isnād-cum-matn analysis proposed by Harald Motzki and Gregor Schoeler. This method consists of determining whether a correlation lies between the transmission process of a hadith, obtained from the analysis of isnāds (chains of transmission), and its textual development, obtained from the examination of its matn (text), sometimes complemented by biographical sources. However, despite the existence of many excellent studies based on this method, presenting the general pattern of variant generation with accuracy is far from being achieved. Reconstructing the Variant Generation Process of Hadith seeks to precisely reconstruct the process of variant generation by analyzing isnāds from various quantitative perspectives, in addition to using the isnād-cum-matn analysis.

L. Albert Hahn published the first edition of the Economic Theory of Bank Credit in 1920 and a radically revised third edition in 1930. A theory of credit recognizes that banks are not only intermediaries of savings but in fact create money themselves. It thus completes the two-part catalogue of over 4,200 coins (those of the Anglo-Saxon period to 1016 were published in volume 65 of the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles) in eight museum collections.This important material is made available for analysis by archaeologists, historians and numismatists of the Viking Age and Anglo-Saxon England for the first time. Finds of English coins constitute some of the most important Norwegian evidence for Viking activity, and for economic life in Norway before the first royal coinage was issued by King Harald Hardrada in the mid-eleventh century. Anglo-Saxon coins made their way to Norway in such numbers through Viking raiding activity, trade and payments of tribute over many years; consequently these collections provide a broad perspective of the late Anglo-Saxon coinage. The volume also includes significant groups of Anglo-Scandinavian and Hiberno-Scandinavian imitative coins, six Scottish and one Irish coin. Rarities include two Hiberno-Manx coins, and further coins from the B. F. Brekke collection of Anglo-Scandinavian imitative coins. Appendices summarise information on the very small fragments from hoards, which are exceptionally well preserved in the Norwegian collections. Cumulative indexes of mints and moneyers include all the coins published in both volumes.

The merit of the authors of this volume is that they are starting to address which strategies children may use both to strengthen and utilize this agency, and not the least point at limitations of agency. · Harald Beyer Broch, University of Oslo Overall this is a strong volume with a coherent narrative and some very rich ethnography. I enjoyed reading it-all the contributors write well and have focused on the themes of the book. The links made between academic and practitioner work were very well done and the personal voices of the authors come through strongly. This is often an extremely hard task to pull off without becoming self-indulgent but in this case it worked very well. · Heather Montgomery, The Open University, UK Children and youth, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds, are experiencing lifestyle choices their parents never imagined and contributing to the transformation of ideals, traditions, education and adult-child power dynamics.
