Multi-Label Dimensionality Reduction - Jieping (arizona State University Ye - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Multi-Label Dimensionality Reduction - Jieping (arizona State University Ye - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Similar to other data mining and machine learning tasks, multi-label learning suffers from dimensionality. An effective way to mitigate this problem is through dimensionality reduction, which extracts a small number of features by removing irrelevant, redundant, and noisy information. The data mining and machine learning literature currently lacks a unified treatment of multi-label dimensionality reduction that incorporates both algorithmic developments and applications. Addressing this shortfall, Multi-Label Dimensionality Reduction covers the methodological developments, theoretical properties, computational aspects, and applications of many multi-label dimensionality reduction algorithms. It explores numerous research questions, including: - - How to fully exploit label correlations for effective dimensionality reduction - How to scale dimensionality reduction algorithms to large-scale problems - How to effectively combine dimensionality reduction with classification - How to derive sparse dimensionality reduction algorithms to enhance model interpretability - How to perform multi-label dimensionality reduction effectively in practical applications - The authors emphasize their extensive work on dimensionality reduction for multi-label learning. Using a case study of Drosophila gene expression pattern image annotation, they demonstrate how to apply multi-label dimensionality reduction algorithms to solve real-world problems. A supplementary website provides a MATLAB ® package for implementing popular dimensionality reduction algorithms.

Off-Stage Groups in Athenian Drama - Alexandra Hardwick - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Off-Stage Groups in Athenian Drama - Alexandra Hardwick - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Despite the crucial roles they often play, no study yet compares the off-stage assemblies, armies, and populations found in surviving Athenian dramatic works. Covering fifth- and early fourth-century tragedy and comedy, Off-Stage Groups in Athenian Drama analyses how off-stage groups influence and respond to events on stage, and how characters interact with these groups. Drama exploits these groups'' off-stage nature by depicting them through different characters'' viewpoints: characters often struggle to define, predict, or control off-stage groups, which obscures and challenges the audience''s ability to interpret them. The interaction between multivalent and sometimes contradictory narratives of off-stage groups demands a new interpretive framework. Off-Stage Groups in Athenian Drama provides this framework, offering new readings of several prominent comedies and tragedies. However, the importance of this framework extends beyond drama. The first chapter surveys depictions of group decision-making in fifth-century prose, in order to demonstrate how Athenian drama responds to prose depictions of group psychology. Athenian drama engages with the early ideas of group psychology circulating in fifth- and early fourth-century Athens; it creates fictive worlds where stereotypical depictions of collective emotion can be probed, explored and taken to their logical extremes. Studying off-stage groups therefore allows us to rethink our understanding of narrative, politics, and social psychology in drama, and the ways in which these fields intersect.

Off-Grid Solar Electrification in Africa - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Off-Grid Solar Electrification in Africa - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book evaluates off-grid solar electrification in Africa by examining how political, economic, institutional, and social forces shape the adoption of off-grid solar technologies, including how issues of energy injustice are manifested at different levels and spaces. The book takes a historical, contemporary, and projective outlook using case studies from pre- and ongoing electrification communities in non-Western countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Malawi, Tanzania, and Nigeria. Beyond the diverse nature of these countries in terms of their geographical location in West, East, and Southern Africa, each offers a different experience in terms of colonial history, economic and institutional infrastructure, social and cultural context, and level of adoption of off-grid solar technologies. Notably, the book contributes to the off-grid solar and energy justice scholarship in low-income non-Western contexts. It examines various approaches to energy justice and does so by engaging with Western and non-Western philosophical notions of the concept. It takes into consideration the major principles of Ubuntu philosophy with the adoption of off-grid solar technologies, hence enriching the energy justice framework. Finally, the book interrogates the degree to which the social mission that catalysed the expansion of the off-grid solar sector is being undermined by broader structural dynamics of the capital investment upon which it is reliant. It also argues that the ascendance of off-grid solar electrification in Africa is transformative in that it enables millions of people without access to or facing uncertainties linked to centralised grid energy to have access to basic energy services.

Off-Grid Electrical Systems in Developing Countries - Henry Louie - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Off-Grid Electrical Systems in Developing Countries - Henry Louie - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book provides students and practicing engineers with a comprehensive guide to off-grid electrification: from microgrids and energy kiosks to solar home systems and solar lanterns. As the off-grid electrification industry grows, universities are starting and expanding courses and programs in humanitarian engineering and appropriate technology. However, there is no textbook that serves this growing market. This book fills that gap by providing a technical foundation of off-grid electrical systems, putting into context the technical aspects for developing countries, and discussing best practices by utilizing real-world data. Chapters expertly integrate the technical aspects of off-grid systems with lessons learned from industry-practitioners taking a pragmatic, data-driven perspective. A variety of off-grid systems and technologies are discussed, including solar, wind, hydro, generator sets, biomass systems, battery storage and converters. Realistic examples, case studies and practical considerations from actual systems highlight the interaction of off-grid systems with the economic, environmental, social and broader development aspects of rural electrification. Whole chapters are dedicated to the operation and control of mini-grids, load and resource estimation, and design of off-grid systems. Special topics focused on electricity access in developing countries are included, such as energy use in rural communities, technical and economic considerations of grid extension, electricity theft, metering, and best practices devoted to common problems. Each chapter is instructor friendly and contains illustrative examples and problems that reinforce key concepts. Complex, open-ended design problems throughout the book challenge the reader to think critically and deeply. The book is appropriate for use in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses related to electrical and energy engineering, humanitarian engineering, and appropriate technology. - Provides a technical foundation of off-grid electrical systems; - Contextualizes the technical aspects for developing countries; - Captures the current and state-of-the art in this rapidly developing field.

Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919 - Thomas S. Hischak - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919 - Thomas S. Hischak - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

Although the venue Off Broadway has long been the birthplace of innovative and popular musicals, there have been few studies of these influential works. Long-running champs, such as The Fantasticks and Little Shop of Horrors, are discussed in many books about American musicals, but what of the hundreds of other Off-Broadway musicals? In Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919, Thomas Hischak looks at more than 375 musicals, which are described, discussed, and analyzed, with particular attention given to their books, scores, performers, and creators. Presented chronologically and divided into chapters for each decade, beginning with the landmark musical Greenwich Village Follies (1919), the book culminates with the satiric The Toxic Avenger (2009). In this volume, any work of consequence is covered, especially if it was popular or influential, but also dozens of more obscure musicals are included to illustrate the depth and breadth of Off Broadway. Works that introduced an important artistic talent, from performers to songwriters, are looked at, and the selection represents the various trends and themes that made Off Broadway significant. In addition to essential data about each musical, the plot and score are described, the success (or lack of) is chronicled, and an opinionated commentary discusses the work''s merits and influences on the musical theatre in general. The first book of its kind, this highly readable volume will please both the theatre scholar and the average musical theatre patron or fan.

Off Book - - Bog - Intellect - Plusbog.dk

Off Book - - Bog - Intellect - Plusbog.dk

In the theatre world, ''off book'' signifies a deadline in the creative process: the date by which performers are to have memorised their lines and will no longer be allowed to carry their play script - the ''book'' - on stage. As such, Off Book makes a strangely appropriate title for a book about devised performance in higher education. In its usual context, ''off book'' captures the tension between ephemeral, live performance and durable, authorized literature: in one sense, the book - the written play - is the essential core, the seed that gives the performance life and meaning. Yet the opposite could be equally true: an ''on book'' performance would not really be a play at all, and an actor reciting lines out of a script in hand is not really acting. A play is only realised in, or through, a performance. We cannot really learn, or play, our part until we can put the book down and enter the stage without it. Devised performance might be described as ''theatre without the book.'' Yet devisors also often use books - books like this one, practical guidebooks and how-to manuals, as well as a myriad of literature outside the discipline mined for inspiration. This is particularly manifest when devising in the context of higher education - a milieu, like theatre, wherein books traditionally signify authority, status, and meaning. So, to the extent that theatres and campuses are places where one expects everything to be done ''by the book,'' devising on campuses is rebellious, even sacrilegious. But on the other hand, both the theatre and the university are expected to challenge tradition, defy expectations, and conduct experiments. The book is presented in four sections reflecting the range of roles devising plays in higher education. The first section, Devising Pedagogy: Teaching Transferable Tools , examines how and why practitioners, educators, and programs conceptualise and plan for devising with adult learners in a range of higher education contexts. The second, Devising Friction: Ensembles, Individuals, and the Institution, shifts the discussion to the classroom, where abstract, pedagogical rubber meets the road of concrete reality. The third, Devising (by) Degrees, Practice-led postgraduate devising project s features contributions by emerging scholar-practitioners who engage with devising as both an object and method of creative scholarship. Finally, the chapters in Devising Bridges: University-Community Engagement explore how devising connects higher education institutions with the public they are intended to serve - particularly in populations and communities that are marginalised within, or even explicitly excluded from participating in, higher education, such as children and people with intellectual disabilities. A valuable and unique resource for drama educators in universities, university students in education, drama, and arts managements, graduate students conducting research, theatre historians, practicing devised theatre artists.
