Hence, the present ICOLD Bulletin 177 supersedes ICOLD Bulletin 126 (‘Roller-compacted concrete dams - State of the art and case histories’, published in 2003) and ICOLD Bulletin 75 (‘Roller-Compacted Concrete for Gravity Dams’ published in 1989). While roller-compacted concrete technology could have still been considered a new technology in 2003, it is now true to say that construction by roller-compaction has become the standard approach for large concrete gravity dams. This Bulletin addresses all aspects of the planning, design, construction and performance of RCC in dams. Mixture proportioning and quality control are discussed and a comprehensive listing of references is included. Many aspects of RCC in dams have become better understood since the publication of Bulletin N o 126 and the present Bulletin contains less information on the particular approaches applied in different countries, but includes more comprehensive information particularly in relation to design, mixture proportioning and construction. With greater understanding, it has further been possible to highlight more definitively the requirements of successful RCC dams, as well as the pitfalls and difficulties that can be associated with RCC dam design and construction. Around the year 1800, independent Native groups still effectively controlled about half the territory of the Americas. How did they maintain their political autonomy and territorial sovereignty, hundreds of years after the arrival of Europeans? In a study that spans the eighteenth to twentieth centuries and ranges across the vast interior of South America, Heather F. Roller examines this history of power and persistence from the vantage point of autonomous Native peoples in Brazil. The central argument of the book is that Indigenous groups took the initiative in their contacts with Brazilian society. Rather than fleeing or evading contact, Native peoples actively sought to appropriate what was useful and potent from outsiders, incorporating new knowledge, products, and even people, on their own terms and for their own purposes. At the same time, autonomous Native groups aimed to control contact with dangerous outsiders, so as to protect their communities from threats that came in the form of sicknesses, vices, forced labor, and land invasions. Their tactical decisions shaped and limited colonizing enterprises in Brazil, while revealing Native peoples' capacity for cultural persistence through transformation. These contact strategies are preserved in the collective memories of Indigenous groups today, informing struggles for survival and self-determination in the present.

This study investigates how that identity affected each stage of Presley''s career. Elvis Presley''s career can be divided into three phases, each of which is signified by a specific image. Each image is coded by a certain style of music, mode of dress, and arena of performance. The evolution from one career phase to another was instigated by a specific event and represented a deliberate calculation on the part of Presley''s manager to attract a wider audience. The first stage spans the years 1956 through 1958, after the singer was introduced to a national audience and before he was drafted into the army. His image as a notorious rock ''n'' roller created a national controversy and was spurred by negative depictions of Presley in the media-many attributing his controversial performing style and appearance to his Southern background. His music was a fusion of rhythm and blues and country-western; or, two types of music indigenous to the South and foreign to the mainstream entertainment industry based in New York City. The second phase of Elvis'' career included his stint as a movie star, in which most aspects of his Southern identity were extracted from his leading man image to enhance his appeal to the mainstream. And, finally, the last stage of his career focused on his image as a Las Vegas performer. Despite the gaudy costumes, Elvis reconnected to his identity as a Southerner in the 1970s by returning to country music and songwriters as a source of inspiration.
