Elin Wagner's Alarm Clock - Katarina Leppanen - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Elin Wagner's Alarm Clock - Katarina Leppanen - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

This book analyses the ideas of the Swedish journalist, feminist, and literary author Elin Wägner (1882-1949), as conveyed in her book Väckarklocka (1941), in a European feminist context. This context is presented in terms of three elements. Firstly, the German sociologist/educationalist Mathilde Vaerting and her sociology of power played an important role in Wägner''s development of a theory of matriarchy. Secondly, the influence of the Austrian feminist Rosa Mayreder and her theory of masculine civilization and feminine culture are analyzed in relation to Wägner''s development of what might be called an early ecological feminism. Thirdly, the mainly unknown Women''s Organization for World Order (WOWO) is presented. 0s and 1930s, which wanted to strengthen women''s position and confidence as political citizens by providing them with a historical past where women ruled (matriarchy). Thereby they not only reinvented a past, but also revitalized the emergence or eternity of patriarchy. These women discussed the possibility of women offering an alternative to the prevailing order. A special analysis is made of Mayreder''s and Wägner''s way of discussing what woman is and in what ways she can challenge the system. Both argued that women ought to have the same rights and duties as men, but that this should not require them to adapt to the distorted male system. This study argues that this position, easily characterized as "essentialist" in modern feminist terms, is in fact functional and strongly emancipatory in its time and context. In this reevaluation of Väckarklocka Katarina Leppänen has established this important Swedish novel as a text central to the development of the feminist movement. Elin Wägner''s Alarm Clock is a book suitable for students of Swedish Literature and European Feminism.

Circadian Clock - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

In this collection, the authors review temporal control of tissue homeostasis and repair by the circadian system. The molecular regulation of circadian timing has been well-characterized in several species as a highly conserved transcriptional feedback loop that maintains roughly 24-hour cellular periodicity. A current challenge is determining how the outputs of the master clock affect peripheral oscillators and numerous biological processes. A subsequent study seeks a more detailed understanding of the physiology and molecular mechanism underlying circadian changes in the plasma of glucose, which might allow for the identification of novel targets for the developing therapeutic approached to the diabetes and obesity diseases. Procambarus acanthophorus, a burrower crayfish, follows a nocturnal circadian rhythm due to the way it spends long periods of time building tunnels to reach the water table during the dry season. Therefore, it follows that this species must have a close relationship with soil. The authors suggest that soil might be an ecological factor with high perceived value, influencing ecological aspects, and physiological functions such as growth, reproduction, and organization of the circadian system. The genes involved in the maintenance of circadian rhythm and its impact on the immunological system are described as disruption of the circadian rhythm leads to significant alterations of the organism and is associated with several biological responses. In the concluding review, some of the most useful characteristics of zebrafish for studying the molecular, cellular, and behavioral aspects of the circadian clock system are described. Zebrafish have been established as an attractive vertebrate model for the examination of light signaling pathways and their impact on the cellular clock because zebrafish cellular clocks have an unusual attribute of being directly light responsive. Additionally, the molecular components of the mammalian and zebrafish cellular clocks are highly similar.

The King of the Great Clock Tower" and "A Full Moon in March" - W. B. Yeats - Bog - Cornell University Press - Plusbog.dk

"It takes years to get my plays right." So Yeats informed Margot Ruddock on October 11, 1934, from Rome, where he had begun to redraft The King of the Great Clock Tower to give her a role to act. In June of that year Yeats had begun to rewrite his first prose version of the play before it had even been staged (it was performed most successfully at the Abbey Theatre from July 30 that summer). Two versions of The King of the Great Clock Tower (one in prose and one in verse) and a new play, A Full Moon in March , derived from the first, were to emerge from a period of gestation that had started early in November 1933. The composition of each play was fueled by Yeats''s intense feeling for a woman. Both were performers: Ninette de Valois elected only to dance on stage and not to speak; Margot Ruddock was an actress possessed of a rich contralto voice who preferred not to dance (despite Yeats''s most enduring description of her as his "sweet dancer"). Yeats devised strategies for each of his dance plays to meet these prescriptions. While admiration for de Valois''s artistry helped to shape the first play, the second for Ruddock was the product of a deepening personal infatuation. The structure and content of the two plays and the differences between them reflect the wholly different emotions that stimulated their creation. This volume of the Cornell Yeats contains manuscript materials for both the prose and verse renditions of The King of the Great Clock Tower and all of the drafts that resulted in A Full Moon in March . It also includes drafts of Yeats''s prefaces and program notes for the plays, as well as staging information and cast photographs of the production of The King of the Great Clock Tower at the Abbey.

Handbook of Fire Control & Protection - Arun Kumar - Bog - SBS Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Handbook of Fire Control & Protection - Arun Kumar - Bog - SBS Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Fire Protection is the study and practice of mitigating unwanted effects of fires. It involves the study of behaviour, compartmentalisation, suppression and investigation of fire and its related emergencies, as well as the research and development, production, testing and application of mitigating systems. This book is like a reference book on the said subject. An introduction to fire and fire typology is provided with focus on fire classes, flash fire, explosive material, wildlife, bushfire, oil field fire etc. An introductory overview of fire alarm systems is given with special emphasis on still alarm, fire alarm box, fire alarm control panel, fire alarm pull station and fire alarm notification appliances. The handbook also discusses briefly the issues related to fire detectors, heat detectors, smoke detectors, flame detectors, aspirated smoke detectors, distributed temperature sensing and thermal imaging cameras. The fire control, suppression and extinguishing systems are described with focus on notifier. Major Fire apparatus, equipment and tools are covered. It also covers dimensions of fire safety standards, fire safety, campus fire safety, fireproofing, firewall, firestop pillow, endothermic, intumescent, fire door, dry riser, cold fire product and list of EN standards. Select case studies of fire fighting college and companies are provided herein with special analysis of fire service education and training. It provides readers with details of history of firefighting, world-wide firefighting, global historic fires and list of films on firefighting, as appendices. Besides presenting a glossary of terms, this book provides a detailed bibliography and elaborate index.
