Hawker and the King's Jewel - Ethan Bale - Bog - Canelo - Plusbog.dk

‘A brutal, brilliant tale, told with verve and pace’ Bernard Cornwell In the twilight of the Wars of the Roses, one knight carries out a final mission for his fallen king… HAUNTED BY A SIN August, 1485. Grizzled knight Sir John Hawker carries a heavy burden on his soul: a decision taken, a deed committed that cannot be undone. When his liege lord, King Richard III, charges Hawker with two secret missions, a chance for atonement beckons. A RACE ACROSS EUROPE... Then Richard falls at the Battle of Bosworth Field, and Hawker puts spurs to his horse, ready to discharge his final duty to the king. But the usurping Tudors have discovered Hawker’s quest, and are hot on his heels. ...FOR THE FATE OF A KINGDOM The Tudors know that Hawker carries with him two things; the king’s priceless ruby, rumoured to be cursed, and a Plantagenet heir… And they know where he’s going. A breath-taking cat and mouse chase across medieval Europe, from Bosworth to Venice. Packed with intricate plotting and beautifully realised characters, this is perfect for fans of Christian Cameron and David Gilman. Praise for Hawker and the King’s Jewel ‘A brutal, brilliant tale, told with verve and pace. Hawker is a terrific creation’ Bernard Cornwell ‘Bale takes the reader from the terror of battle where a crown is lost and won to the sparkling jewel that is Venice, teeming with intrigue and treachery. Great storytelling’ David Gilman, author of the Master of War series ''An absolute gem of a novel. I was taken aback by Bale''s skill and talent. Meticulously researched, with a totally authentic medieval feel, the novel fizzes with action, romance and intrigue. A gripping yarn'' Angus Donald, author of the Outlaw series ‘Hawker is an ageing, flawed character and it is in his description of the man''s inner turmoil, his bursts of energy and, above all, loyalty that the author has created a living soul… Compelling, authentic characters, a tight narrative which drives the story with verve; dialogue which is neither mock Gothic nor anachronistic, all allow the reader to feel part of the sounds and sights of the late fifteenth century. The novel deserves high praise’ The Ricardian

Runner - Lizzy Hawker - Bog - Quarto Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This is the complete story of long-distance runner Lizzy Hawker’s journey from a school girl running the streets of London to a world record-breaking athlete racing on mountains. Scared witless and surrounded by a sea of people, Lizzy Hawker stands in the church square at the centre of Chamonix on a late August evening, waiting for the start of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. The mountains towering over the pack of runners promise a gruelling 8,600 metres of ascent and descent over 158 kilometres of challenging terrain that will test the feet, legs, heart and mind. These nervous moments before the race signal not just the beginning of nearly twenty-seven hours of effort that saw Lizzy finish as first woman, but the start of the career of one of Britain’s most successful endurance athletes. She went on to become the 100km Women’s World Champion, win the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc an unprecedented five times, hold the world record for 24 hours road running and become the first woman to stand on the overall winners’ podium at Spartathlon. An innate endurance and natural affinity with the mountains has led Lizzy to push herself to the absolute limits, including a staggering 320 kilometre run through the Himalayas, from Everest Base Camp to Kathmandu in Nepal. Lizzy’s remarkable spirit was recognised in 2013 when she was a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. These ultimate challenges ask not just what the feet and legs can do, but question the inner thoughts and contemplations of a runner. Lizzy’s astonishing story uncovers the physical, mental and emotional challenges that runners go through at the edge of human endurance – inspiring us to get out of the chair and go running in the mountains.

‘Hawker is a terrific creation’ Bernard Cornwell Are they saving a prince, or unchaining a monster? December 1476. The infamous Vlad the Impaler – Dracula – is reported killed in a Turkish ambush: the brutal scourge of the Ottomans is no more… November 1485. Nine years later, mysterious Hungarian noblewoman Maria Hunyadi lays a quest at the feet of Sir John Hawker, loyal retainer to the fallen King Richard III and protector of Richard’s illegitimate son, Sir Giles Ellingham. The mission: to liberate her father from imprisonment in a remote Wallachian mountain fortress. The prisoner: Vlad Dracula. Indebted to Maria for saving his men’s lives in Venice, Hawker reluctantly accepts her story and agrees to come to her aid. But any rescue will be fraught with danger. There are powerful forces at work who would not want the great warlord found alive. But is Maria really who she says she is? Is she looking for more than just her father? And is the Impaler truly alive, after all this time – a lost prince? From the fringes of the Hungarian empire to the dark mountain forests of Saxon Transylvania, Hawker must contend with enemies on all sides, and those unseen within the company itself. The exciting sequel to Hawker and the King’s Jewel – described by Bernard Cornwell as ‘brilliant’ – perfect for fans of Christian Cameron and David Gilman. I don''t normally read historical fiction like this but was blown away by the experience - it was a great story, told at a good clip with wonderful characters, action and lovely historical touches that made you really “feel” and appreciate the period but without weighing down the whole. I more than surprised myself by sneaking in the odd hour of reading here and there in ways that I never normally do. It was an absolute treat’ ‘The characterisation and period detail are superb and with plenty of action. The pace is just right, making it a really good and engaging read’ ‘A rollercoaster ride full of twists and turns’ ‘I can honestly say the book grabs the reader’s attention and draws them in from the opening pages. It opens your mind to all sorts of possibilities to where the narrative is heading, then suddenly switches track, leaving you grasping for answers. It certainly had me riveted and enthralled’ ‘You will be drawn into the political intrigues of15th century Europe. Very informative and not too heavy. I would thoroughly recommend it.’ ‘Beautifully researched; an exciting & gripping tale of what might have been’ ‘Breathless and rollicking… This reader could hardly bear to put it down’

Three spirited wives in nineteenth-century Utah. One husband. A compelling novel of family, sisterhood, and survival by the Washington Post bestselling author of One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow . 1857. Three women—once strangers—come together in unpredictable Utah Territory. Hopeful, desperate, and willful, they’ll allow nothing on Earth or in Heaven to stand in their way. Following the call of their newfound Mormon faith, Tamar Loader and her family weather a brutal pilgrimage from England to Utah, where Tamar is united with her destined husband, Thomas Ricks. Clinging to a promise for the future, she abides an unexpected surprise: Thomas is already wedded to one woman—Tabitha, a local healer—and betrothed to still another. Orphaned by tragedy and stranded in the Salt Lake Valley, Jane Shupe struggles to provide for herself and her younger sister. She is no member of the Mormon migration, yet Jane agrees to marry Thomas. Out of necessity, with no love lost, she too must bear the trials of a sister-wife. But when the US Army’s invasion brings the rebellious Mormon community to heel, Tamar, Jane, and Tabitha are forced to retreat into the hostile desert wilderness with little in common but the same man—and the resolve to keep themselves and their children alive. What they discover, as one, is redemption, a new definition of family, and a bond stronger than matrimony that is tested like never before.

Hawker Siddeley HS.801 Nimrod - Chris Gibson - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Outside of the Spitfire, the Nimrod was without doubt the RAF aircraft most familiar to the general public thanks to its role in maritime rescue co-ordination. But this was not the Nimrod''s primary role.As the first jet-powered dedicated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft, Nimrod was the result of several failed attempts to develop a replacement for the Avro Shackleton. On entering service Nimrod gave the RAF an exceptional ASW capability that, especially in its MR2 variant, was a quantum leap ahead of anything in the NATO order of battle. The Nimrod MR1s entered service in 1969. Based in Moray, Cornwall and Malta, they could transit at high speed and altitude to a distant patrol area before descending to deploy their sensors to seek out submarines. The Nimrod MR1 had been a compromise on many levels and the intention had always been to upgrade the original specification. This arrived in the form of the Nimrod MR2 in 1982 which incorporated new radars, acoustic suite and weapons. Use of the MR2s in the South Atlantic led to operations in most of the conflict areas Britain''s armed forces found themselves including the Balkans, Persian Gulf and over the mountains of Afghanistan. This book examines the operation and development of the Nimrod - the RAF''s mighty hunter - across four decades, recognised as one of the finest maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) ever developed. Illustrated throughout with photos and artworks, it includes potted histories of each Nimrod and its ultimate fate, details of the survivors and where they can be seen today.
