Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart Ivy Paddy's Pride Persian Ivy

Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart Ivy Paddy's Pride Persian Ivy

Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart, also known as Ivy Sulphur Heart and Ivy Paddy’s Pride and also Persian Ivy, is a self-clinging evergreen climber valued for its variegated foliage and exceptional hardiness. Large and vigorous, this striking climber is perfect for covering walls or camouflaging bare patches of land as a ground cover plant. The evergreen, variegated foliage of this ivy cultivar offers multiple seasons of interest. The dark green leaves with a central streak of golden yellow are ovate and quite large when compared to other Ivy varieties, reaching up to 20 centimetres in length. Fully mature specimens of this evergreen climber have insignificant, spherical, green flowers. In the winter, the inconspicuous flowers are replaced by discreet clusters of black berries, which attract birds and pollinators.Ivy Sulphur Heart thrives in full sun to partial shade. However, to ensure that the foliage keeps its vivid, contrasting shades, plant it in a sunny location, as the colour of the leaves tends to lose its vibrancy in dimly lit spots. This vigorous climber performs best in alkaline and acidic soils that are fertile, hummus-rich and well-drained, but it is not fussy when it comes to soil type. The ideal location for Ivy Paddy’s Pride is definitely a sun-facing wall, where this large climber can spread undisturbed and a show of its spectacular golden-green foliage. A Middle East native, Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart is well known as a robust, tough climber. Fully hardy in Britain and Ireland (hence the nickname Paddy’s Pride), this cultivar can survive even when the temperatures drop to -15 degrees. Much more rugged than most Ivy varieties, Sulphur Heart is relatively resistant to pest and diseases. As a testimony to its good constitution, this vigorous climber received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society.A self-clinging climber, this plant has aerial roots, that enable it to cling easily to the surface beneath it. With a quick growth rate, this vigorous climber can grow up to be 4 to 8 metres high and up to 4 metres wide in just a few years. To keep Ivy Sulphur Heart tidy and in perfect shape, occasionally trim the overgrown and unwanted shoots. With a year-round interest and spectacular, variegated foliage, Hedera Colchica Sulphur Heart is a vigorous climber that’s ideal for hiding unseemly walls or for cottage gardens, where climbing ivy is the essential part of the charm. Hardy and highly decorative, this large leaved cultivar can be used as a ground cover plant, ideal for hiding unseemly parts of your garden.

Magnolia Kobus Tree Northern Japanese Magnolia Tree

Magnolia Kobus Tree Northern Japanese Magnolia Tree

Magnolia Kobus or the Northern Japanese Magnolia is a beautiful, slender small magnolia tree that reaches a maximum height of just 10 metres. It fits into almost all gardens schemes and particularly likes chalky soils.Magnolia Kobus is a popular deciduous small Japanese tree. Its fragrant white flowers are one of the first colours to emerge in April, sometimes March, after a long dark winter. The flowers are large, pure white blooms measuring up to 10 cm wide. Each bloom is individually comprised of six distinct snow white petals. This is not a tree for the impatient gardener though, because it can take up to 12-15 years for flowers to emerge. It is a slow growing beauty that’s in it for the long run. However, once you have waited out its maturity this is a regular, abundant bloomer. Flowers are followed by foliage and pink fruits with scarlet seeds that appear in late summer. The large leaves measuring up to 15 cm long are borne in thin ovals of a mid-green hue. They turn yellow in autumn and fall with the frosts. How Hardy is Magnolia KobusNorthern Japanese Magnolia is beautiful but it is extremely tough. Pruning is not required, but you can remove broken or crossed stems in mid-summer after the flowers have finished and the leaves have appeared.Although tough, flower buds may be damaged by late frosts, so it is best to site your Magnolia Kobus in a sheltered position with full sun that is free from freezing winds. Picea Abies Excelsa Norway Spruce Living Christmas Tree

Picea Abies Excelsa Norway Spruce Living Christmas Tree

Picea Abies Excelsa (Norway Spruce) is a large evergreen conifer with soft glossy green needles and traditional cones in winter. It’s an excellent landscaping tree that needs space. This handsome conifer is better known as the Norway Spruce. It’s native to Europe from the Alps to the Carpathian Mountains growing from sea level up to 3,000 metres in altitude. It’s a hardy, versatile tree and one we tend to associate with Christmas, often used as the quintessential Christmas tree. Young Picea Abies Excelsa grows upright and conically spreading in width as it matures. Its strong branches are covered in soft 2.5-centimetre glossy green needles on branchlets that are safe for pets and small children to touch. In autumn, traditional-style cones appear on branch tips. To start with they are scaly red-green cylinders but they mature into tapered, orange-brown cones that reach up to 15 centimetres long and five centimetres wide.Height And Spread of Picea Abies ExcelsaPicea Abies Excelsa is a large conifer that needs space to grow because it can reach 20 metres tall by eight metres in spread over 20 – 50 years.  If this is too large, we have cultivars such as Picea Pungens Hoopsii that reaches around two metres or Colorado Spruce Iseli Fastigiate that reaches three meters in height, but only 75 centimetres in width. How Hardy Is Picea Abies ExcelsaThis is a very hardy conifer that copes with the coldest winters if its roots are well drained and it receives full sun. Trees are rarely lower maintenance than Norway Spruces. How To Care For Picea Abies ExcelsaAn easy-care, low-maintenance Norway Spruce needs little attention once it’s established.Choose a spot in full sun with neutral to acidic soil because it won’t thrive in the shade or on chalk. Ensure it has plenty of room to grow. The number one killer of newly planted trees is lack of water. Give Norway Spruce a watering can full each day until you spot new growth, even if it’s been raining. Trees need lots of water to establish their root system.Pruning isn’t required, but a thick layer of acidic mulch (bracken, pine or ericaceous compost) each year will boost its nutrient intake and seal in moisture.

Pterocarya Fraxinifolia Caucasian Wingnut Caucasian Walnut

Pterocarya Fraxinifolia Caucasian Wingnut Caucasian Walnut

The Caucasian Wingnut tree, botanically known as Pterocarya Fraxinifolia, is a large, fast growing deciduous tree suitable for big spaces. It is native to Eastern Turkey and Iran but was introduced to Britain in the 1780s, taking to the climate and growing conditions well.In spring the Caucasian Wingnut tree buds out its mid-green pinnate leaves which are exceedingly large - sometimes measuring up to 60cms in length with 19-21 pointed leaves each measuring 15cms. These leaves often cause confusion with Ash trees as they are the same shape, however Caucasian Wingnut is actually a member of the walnut family. In late spring small green flowers in hanging racemes of 50cms long attract pollinators in an unusually large display. These small flowers develop into the wingnut seeds that are loved by children as they abundantly helicopter to the ground in early autumn along with its rich yellow foliage. During winter the fissured bark and strong branching framework adds interest and texture to an empty garden. Often wingnut seeds remain on the tree, draping through its branches and swaying in the winter winds.Height and spread of Pterocarya FraxinifoliaThis is a large tree that will reach 17-22 metres in height and spread over 8 within 20-50 years depending on soil conditions. It needs room to spread and is most suitable for larger, open spaces. How Hardy Is Pterocarya FraxinifoliaCaucasian Wingnut is hardy throughout the UK down to sub-zero temperature s. It will tolerate temporary flooding and exposed conditions too.How To Use Pterocarya FraxinifoliaThis is a large tree, so it’s important to make sure you have sufficient room. If you have  enough space it’s the perfect tree to lie beneath on a hot sunny day looking up at its swaying foliage. How To Care For Pterocarya FraxinifoliaPterocarya Fraxinifolia likes moist, well drained soil best but it will grow in most conditions including clay, sand, loams of any pH. It will grow in sheltered and exposed areas, but as the tree becomes established you will need to stake it firmly against rocking winds. Young specimens need regular watering and mulching too. No pruning is required, but you can cut out dead or crossed branches in winter. Some suckers may appear in spring, and these can be cut back easily if you don’t want them.Pterocarya Fraxinifolia is not often spotted in UK gardens but its unusual foliage, flowers and fruits make it highly desirable if you have room. Larger gardens in need of a focal point can’t go wrong with the quirky and low maintenance Pterocarya Fraxinifolia.

Acer Negundo Box Elder Tree Mature Trees for Sale Online UK

Acer Negundo Box Elder Tree Mature Trees for Sale Online UK

Acer Negundo Box Elder TreeThe Acer Negundo, commonly called the Box Elder tree, is a type of maple tree. It is exceptionally hardy and tough. Box Elder trees often grow where other trees fail such as in bottomlands and areas that frequently flood. It is native to much of the United States and commonly found growing prolifically along streambanks and around other bodies of water. The Box Elder Tree is a popular, fast growing bushy headed mid to large sized deciduous tree. We sell these specimens as mature trees. The foliage of the Acer Negundo features pinnate leaves that have five to nine leaflets. Each leaflet measures up to 10 centimeters in length and 7 centimeters in width. The top sides of the leaves are a bright green and the undersides are a shade lighter. The margins of the leaves are slightly serrated. The new growth shoots of the Box Elder are ornamental and appear a bright, mint green. They often also feature a light white, purple, or pink coating when young. In the early spring, nondescript flowers appear that droop in racemes that measure up to 20 centimeters in length. Following flowering, seeds develop. The seeds are slender samaras that measure about 2 centimeters in length and grow in clusters. Many people think that the clusters of seeds resemble a bunch of keys hanging on a key ring. Only female trees produce the seed clusters. During the autumn months, the seeds provide visual interest until they drop from the tree. The tree's autumn colours are either bright yellow in areas with cold winters or a more bronze-orange in regions with mild winters. The Box Elder tree grows rapidly to a height of almost 25 metres with a canopy width of equal proportion which makes it an ideal shade choice. It is also commonly used in shelterbelts or to stabilize flood-prone areas such as along rivers. The diameter of the Acer Negundo’s trunk is relatively slender and rarely exceeds 50 centimeters in diameter. These trees are sold root-balled with a multi-stem shape or form. The several trunks can form a virtually impenetrable barrier when fully grown.Plant the Box Elder in full sun for best growth. Ideally, it should receive at least six hours of sun or more per day. Although this tree is stalwart and succeeds where very few other trees will survive, it still requires good care to establish a strong root system. It should be planted in an area that provides it with plenty of room to grow to its full potential. If you are seeking a tenacious tree that adapts to a variety of situations, then look no further than the Acer Negundo. Its rapid growth and ability to tolerate adverse conditions makes it a perfect low maintenance shade tree choice. See also Acer Negundo Kelly's Gold and Acer Negundo Flamingo.

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut Tree Multi Stemmed

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut Tree Multi Stemmed

Aesculus Hippocastanum Horse Chestnut TreeAesculus Hippocastanum, more commonly known as Common Horse Chestnut, is widely recognised as the conker tree. It is native to the Balkans, but has become well-established in the UK since its introduction in the late 16th century. The Horse Chestnut is named for the horse-shoe shaped scar its fallen leaves make on the twig. In turn this led to the belief that ground up conkers could relieve respiratory problems in horses. Smooth dark brown conkers are not the sole reason to choose this stunning deciduous tree because it also has beautiful spring flowers which are some of the most ornamental in late spring to early summer.  In May to June creamy-white flowers burst through in upright panicles with each individual flower containing up to five fringed petals that gradually mature into a pinky-red at the base. In September, if the flowers are pollinated, they develop into the green-spiked casings that contain its fruit – the legendary conker. Throughout the summer the Common Horse Chesnut has a broad canopy of large, easily recognisable palmate leaves that hang from a central stem. The leaves are grouped into five to seven fingered ‘palms’ which turn yellow-brown in autumn and begin to fall as the temperatures change. Autumnal leaf fall leaves behind a solid structural framework in winter.Height and Spread of Aesculus HippocastanumThis is a large tree and really only suitable for a large garden. It can reach heights of 30 metres and spread over eight metres. How Hardy Is Aesculus HippocastanumThis is a fully hardy tree in all of the UK, it can withstand sub zero temperatures, some drought and exposed locations. How To Use Aesculus HippocastanumThe Aesculus Hippocastanum needs plenty of room to grow, so it is best suited to large gardens as a specimen in the lawn. These specific trees have been trained as multi-stemmed with several upright branches rather than one main leader. This gives more a wild and natural appearance making it suitable for wildlife and informal gardens. In summer the dense foliage provides privacy and noise reduction, but it not suitable for under planting because the foliage unfurls early in the year and cuts out light. It goes without saying that the Horse Chestnut is a great tree for children who universally love collecting and playing with conkers that fall in late summer to autumn. How To Care For Aesculus HippocastanumLittle care is needed by this tough and beautiful tree, it happily tolerates all soils and does not require pruning, although you can remove the lower branches to let in light as it matures. Your Common Horse Chestnut will be delivered root-balled ready for immediate planting. New specimens will require water until they are established, and in early spring a thick layer of mulch around the base will boost its health and vitality. If you’re looking for an instantly recognisable low maintenance tree with beautiful flowers the Aesculus Hippocastanum is a great choice – it is one of the most floral and attractive trees and produces family-friendly conkers.

Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia Golden Robinia False Acacia Tree

Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia Golden Robinia False Acacia Tree

Robinia Pseudoacacia Frisia or Golden RobiniaRobinia pseudoacacia Frisia (also known as False Acacia Tree or Golden Robinia) is a mid-sized tree naturally native to the South Eastern United States. Robinia is a deciduous tree with small white flowers and eye-catching golden yellow foliage, along with a strongly fissured bark with strident spines on the leaf stems which makes it easy to recognize. The tree belongs to the Fabaceace (pea) family. Its most suitable habitat is a sunny position under direct sunlight such as garden, roadside areas, urban bushland and open woodlands etc. As it matures, the bark on the main trunk of False Acacia trees takes on a grayish colour and ultimately becomes deeply furrowed over time. However, more than any other characteristic, it is for its attractive foliage that it is prized. Robinia Pseudoacaia Frisia has soft, draping leaves that remain golden-yellow throughout the growing season. Its consecutively arranged leaves are approximately 8-15 cm long. Each leaf has numerous leaflets on tiny stems and are oval or oblong in shape. The Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia tree has pea-shaped white flowers in late spring, early summer, which are organized in extended clusters. The Golden Robinia tree produces an elongated and flattened pod-like fruit that turns from green to brown as it matures. The fruits are normally hairless and are half-open when mature to ultimately release seeds of black or dark brown colour. Golden Robinia Trees grows up to 10 meters tall. The elegant broad-crowned Robinia pseudoacacia Frisia Tree is best grow where direct exposure to wind is avoided. It is not overly fussy about soil type. In fact, even white/chalky soils are extremely well tolerated. False Acacia is fully UK hardy.

Magnolia Heaven Scent. Magnolias Nursery. London & Online UK

Magnolia Heaven Scent is a flowering magnolia with pale pink globlet shaped flowers with a waxy appearance. The scent from these magnolias is very delicate citrus. We rate this variety as an amazing early flowering magnolia that developes into a small upright ornamental tree. One of the most popular, Heaven Scent is best known for its profusion of fragrant flowers in the spring. Unfolding from large, vase-shaped buds, the blossoms are blush pink with a magenta stripe on the outside and delicate white on the inner side of the petals. Unlike most Magnolia varieties, this specific cultivar has a prolonged flowering season, allowing you to enjoy the remarkable scented blossoms for 4 to 6 weeks. The foliage develops after the flowers, and the glossy, dark green leaves completely envelop the upright branches.Growing Tip: Plant in a fairly sheltered area of the garden, these shrubs prefer full sun to partial shade and avoid over pruning. For best results, plant this large flowering shrub in acidic to neutral soil, moist but well-drained. Avoid transplanting or unsettling the soil around it, since this cultivar does not appreciate disturbance. This ornamental shrub with a columnar habit can grow to be 8 to 12 metres high and spread wider than 12 metres, when fully mature. However, most specimens of this cultivar do not exceed 4 metres, both in height and width, even in optimal conditions. Ginkgo Biloba Tit (also Ginkgo biloba 'Chi Chi') is a rare, dwarf variety of the ancient genus Ginkgo Biloba or Maidenhair tree). Although dwarf, the sense of drama as the leaves change colour is no less dramatic.Ginkgo trees have long been prized for their autumn foliage when the beautiful Ginkgo Biloba fan-shaped leaves turn a magnificent deep rich yellow. The effect can be quite breath-taking, particularly stunning on patios, terraces or courtyards. The Ginkgo genus is an ancient one, dating from the Jurassic era. At one point in fact, it was believed to be extinct, but was luckily re-discovered in the early 18th Century. Although most gardeners grow quince for the edible fruit, they are decorative and fragrant enough to provide a focal point from spring to late autumn. The versatile Quince Vranja looks stunning as a stand-alone shrub in an ornamental lawn, as part of a deep flower border, or trained against a wall. It will reach a maximum height of four metres and similar spread, but this will take ten to twenty years depending on growing conditions. Cydonia Oblonga Vranja is self fertile, but several quince of a different variety means chances of pollination, and therefore fruit, are even greater. How To Care For Cydonia Oblonga VranjaThis is a tough quince but warm conditions are needed to maximise fruit ripening, so choose a sunny spot for your Quince Vranja. Quince will tolerate most soils preferring moisture tentative, but not water-logged.  A thick layer of well -rotted manure in early spring will help produce fruit and keep it healthy.  Little pruning is required, but if you are fan-training tie back stems and cut out any forward growing or damaged shoots in late winter or early spring.

Populus Nigra Italica Black Poplar Italica Lombardy Poplar

Populus Nigra Italica Black Poplar Italica Lombardy Poplar

Populus Nigra Italica, Black Poplar Italica or Lombardy PoplarSynonymous with Populus Nigra Pyramidalis, Black Poplar Italica is a large, deciduous tree, appreciated for its elegant form. With a narrow, columnar habit, this elegant cultivar is often used to form a tall screen. The Lombardy Poplar is a male clone, meaning it will produce only decorative catkins and there will be no seeds that would litter your garden. Appearing on tree in the spring, the catkins are a lovely, deep red shade. The foliage unfolds soon after, and the medium green, ovate leaves retain their colour until they drop.Populus Nigra Italica is a cultivar that naturally occurs on forest margins, fields, and boggy lowlands. As such, when grown in the garden, this ornamental tree prefers humus-rich, fertile soils that are moist but well-drained. It thrives in full sun, both in sheltered and exposed locations. When planting this cultivar, make sure to choose a spot that is not near any buildings on your property, as its vigorous and shallow root system can cause problems in the long run.First discovered in the 18th century, in northern Italy, Black Poplar Italica originated as a single specimen. Now widely distributed across Europe and beyond, this fastigiate tree is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. It will withstand even severe winter temperatures and it is not bothered by frosts. For its extraordinary qualities, Lombardy Poplar has been given the Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society.Height & Width:Grand and impressive, the columnar habit of the Populus Nigra Italica only enhances its stature. This tree can grow to be up to 30 metres high, and 4 to 8 metres wide, which is why it is only recommended for large gardens.Maintaining Black Poplar Italica’s attractive shape requires little effort. It will not need any trimming to retain its fastigiated form, but you will have to remove its suckers every autumn and winter. If the suckers are not routinely removed, Lombardy Poplar can become invasive. The stately habit of Populus Nigra Italica makes it ideally suited for tall screens or hedges. Even though it is most often planted en masse, on larger estates where its imposing size adds architectural value, this cultivar can also be grown on its own. Isolated, this ornamental tree can be used to add drama to spacious lawns.Make sure to take a look at our selection of tall and mature trees, as well as our collection of trees for screening.

Cydonia Oblonga Vranja Quince Vranja Fruiting Quince Trees

Cydonia Oblonga Vranja Quince Vranja Fruiting Quince Trees

Cydonia Oblonga Vranja or Quince Vranja, is a beautiful single variety quince that produces sweet-smelling flowers and large showy fragrant fruit, golden-yellow when ripe. The RHS has given Vranja the Award of Garden Merit. A small deciduous fruit tree, Quince Vranja is a popular choice for its strong, upright habit. Its leaves are grey-green with a fluffy texture beneath, and they turn an attractive buttery yellow before falling in autumn. Beautiful pale pink flowers appear in May. They are bowl-shaped and showy measuring up to 5 cm across. These blooms turn into the pale green fruits that gradually sun-ripen into golden-yellow quince in late autumn. They are extremely fragrant and attractive fruits. How Hardy Is Cydonia Oblonga Vranja?Quince are native to south-western Asia and are particularly abundant in Iran and Serbia. This means they are used to harsh, cold winters and hot summers. Although this is a hardy shrub that will tolerate wet and cold conditions of the UK, during early spring the flowers are susceptible to late frosts. How To Use Cydonia Oblonga VranjaThis is the best variety of quince to fan train against a sunny wall, but it can also be grown as a shrub or small tree.
