Sacrality and Materiality - - Bog - Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG - Plusbog.dk

Christian theology traditionally regards the sacramental as the polar opposite of the profane. The polarity is a memorial of contemporary desacralisation, profanisation, and sacralisation that stands as a portal to the story of modern reality. In our liminal space, we neither de-sacralise our environs nor re-sacralise the world. The lines are blurred and our perception of spirituality is neither immanent nor transcendent. While words fail to articulate the condition, stories are told and tales of experiences come together to form new theoretical nets, systems and categories. The conference volume, Sacrality and Materiality: Locating Intersections seeks to reply to the questions: Where does the sacred intersect with the material? What happens when they meet? First, however, does the sacral even exist? Would it be more productive to ignite sacramental discourse at the intersections of a new matrix? Historically, materiality is other than spirituality -- an intersection of the two is an intangible event of the intellect and spirit. We must engage a bipolar setting in the context of its own history in order to speak about the unspeakable. Despite that spirituality and materiality refuse to assume the categories assigned to the initial polarities of sacrality and profanity, the volume addresses the constrictions. Sacral materialism and sacral spiritualism both exist in their own right, and Christian theology has more to offer than polarities. The sacral is the meeting point for the fission of thought. Is the sacramental a topos for telling a postmodern story of spiritual experience? Is Evangelical sacramental theology relevant? Does theological talk about holy materiality belong in denominational and inter-religious dialogue?

Reconciliation and Refugees - - Bog - Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG - Plusbog.dk

The book continues the RIPAR series by focusing on the MENA region, which has not yet been dealt with. Because of the numerous wars and conflicts in this area, further volumes are planned. This volume is about refugees and their diverse needs for reconciliation with themselves and others. In particular, feelings of sadness and guilt for leaving home and parts of the family behind, bad experiences on the run, conflicts with other refugees and with local people, the loss of a large part of what gave meaning and meaning to life, and the difficulties of a Returning to a changed country, a home that may no longer feel like home, are the individual facets of this need for reconciliation. Activities of the UN, international refugee organizations, government agencies, municipalities, NGOs, religious and humanitarian organizations are presented in this book. Numerous researchers from the countries of the MENA region will have their say. They describe not only successful activities, but also difficulties for numerous societies in the MENA region in maintaining the originally hospitable attitude towards the refugees. Similar to Germany, descending curves of the acceptance of refugees can also be drawn for countries such as Jordan, Turkey or Lebanon. However, the book also shows how great a task these countries have to cope with due to the influx of refugees and what efforts have been made. In addition to authors from Morocco, Libya, Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, the volume also contains texts from German, Greek, Italian and American perspectives. The book shows a region ravaged by wars and conflicts, but it also shows initiatives and approaches towards reconciliation.

Philip Melanchthon - Nicole Kuropka - Bog - Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG - Plusbog.dk

Philip Melanchthon - Nicole Kuropka - Bog - Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG - Plusbog.dk

These twelve essays by international scholars investigate Melanchthons theological activities as teacher, confessor of the faith, and defender of his doctrine and ecclesiastical policies as they developed within the context of his service of society and church. In the past quarter century Melanchthon researchers have scrutinized older, mostly negative, interpretations of the Preceptor Germaniae. The editors present in this volume precisely focused appraisals of "Master Philip" in his role as theologian at the university and in the service of his own prince and others. By carefully placing his use of Aristotle, his understanding of the nature of training for pastoral ministry, his biblical exegesis in context, by analyzing four of his attempts to formulate Wittenberg teaching in public confession, by assessing how his own writings took on normative character for the church, and by tracing his thinking on the free will and the Lords Supper in the midst of controversy, these authors offer carefully etched portraits of Melanchthon as Preceptor ecclesiae. This volume contributes to the expansion of our understanding of Melanchthon as key figure in the Wittenberg Reformation and the currents of controversy that have long surrounded the interpretation of his contributions. The Synod of Dort - - Bog - Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG - Plusbog.dk

The Synod of Dort - - Bog - Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG - Plusbog.dk

The Synod of Dort was an international conference of Reformed leaders held in 16181619 in the Netherlands. It is famous for its so-called Five Points of Calvinism which were a refutation of the Five Remonstrances of the followers of Arminius on the nature of divine grace and the perseverance of believers unto eternal salvation. As an international Synod, Dort made a significant impact on the definition and development of Reformed orthodoxy for decades and centuries to come. In countries such as France, the Canons of Dort served as a confessional boundary for Reformed orthodoxy and all pastors had to swear allegiance to them. Despite its tremendous influence, the decisions of the Synod of Dort remain a mystery to many today and are subject to caricatures and stereotypes of an extreme divine determinism and the hijacking of Calvins pure theology. This volume seeks to shed light on various aspects of the Synod of Dort in order to inform the contemporary reader of its proper historical and theological context and its experiential emphases. Some leading scholars of post-Reformation Reformed thought and the Synod have contributed essays to this work. The book is divided into three major sections designed to deliver a better overall perspective on the Synod. The first section focuses on the reception of the Canons of Dort among the Reformed churches in France where they were accepted and enforced. However, there were some internal questions, concerns, and even objections to the canons which are detailed in these chapters. The second section hones in on the theology of the Canons of Dort with particular attention to the doctrines of election and the nature of the atonement. This section also includes an important chapter on the relationship between church and state, always a central concern in the Reformation and post-Reformation eras. Finally, the third major section looks at how believers could apply the theology to their daily lives and devotion to Christ. These chapters indicate that this was not merely a theological conference, but one that had practical and experiential implications as well. The book concludes with a chapter on the application of the Synod for believers today.
