Faulkner and the Native South - - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Contributions by Eric Gary Anderson, Melanie R. Anderson, Jodi A. Byrd, Gina Caison, Robbie Ethridge, Patricia Galloway, LeAnne Howe, John Wharton Lowe, Katherine M. B. Osburn, Melanie Benson Taylor, Annette Trefzer, and Jay Watson From new insights into the Chickasaw sources and far-reaching implications of Faulkner's fictional place-name "Yoknapatawpha," to discussions that reveal the potential for indigenous land-, family-, and story-based methodologies to deepen understanding of Faulkner's fiction (including but not limited to the novels and stories he devoted explicitly to Native American topics), the eleven essays of this volume advance the critical analysis of Faulkner's Native South and the Native South's Faulkner. Critics push beyond assessments of the historical accuracy of his Native representations and the colonial hybridity of his Indian characters. Essayists turn instead to indigenous intellectual culture for new models, problems, and questions to bring to Faulkner studies. Along the way, readers are treated to illuminating comparisons between Faulkner's writings and the work of a number of Native American authors, filmmakers, tribal leaders, and historical figures. Faulkner and the Native South brings together Native and non-Native scholars in a stimulating and often surprising critical dialogue about the indigenous wellsprings of Faulkner's creative energies and about Faulkner's own complicated presence in Native American literary history.

Bandits, Misfits, and Superheroes - Doug Singsen - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Bandits, Misfits, and Superheroes - Doug Singsen - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

American comics from the start have reflected the white supremacist culture out of which they arose. Superheroes and comic books in general are products of whiteness, and both signal and hide its presence. Even when comics creators and publishers sought to advance an antiracist agenda, their attempts were often undermined by a lack of awareness of their own whiteness and the ideological baggage that goes along with it. Even the most celebrated figures of the industry, such as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Jack Jackson, William Gaines, Stan Lee, Robert Crumb, Will Eisner, and Frank Miller, have not been able to distance themselves from the problematic racism embedded in their narratives despite their intentions or explanations. Bandits, Misfits, and Superheroes: Whiteness and Its Borderlands in American Comics and Graphic Novels provides a sober assessment of these creators and their role in perpetuating racism throughout the history of comics. Josef Benson and Doug Singsen identify how whiteness has been defined, transformed, and occasionally undermined over the course of eighty years in comics and in many genres, including westerns, horror, crime, funny animal, underground comix, autobiography, literary fiction, and historical fiction. This exciting and groundbreaking book assesses industry giants, highlights some of the most important episodes in American comic book history, and demonstrates how they relate to one another and form a larger pattern, in unexpected and surprising ways.

A Transatlantic History of Haitian Vodou - Benjamin Hebblethwaite - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

A Transatlantic History of Haitian Vodou - Benjamin Hebblethwaite - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Connecting four centuries of political, social, and religious history with fieldwork and language documentation, A Transatlantic History of Haitian Vodou analyzes Haitian Vodou''s African origins, transmission to Saint-Domingue, and promulgation through song in contemporary Haiti. Split into two sections, the African chapters focus on history, economics, and culture in Dahomey, Allada, and Hueda while scrutinizing the role of Europeans in fomenting tensions. The political, military, and slave trading histories of the kingdoms in the Bight of Benin reveal the circumstances of enslavement, including the geographies, ethnicities, languages, and cultures of enslavers and enslaved. The study of the spirits, rituals, structure, and music of the region''s religions sheds light on important sources for Haitian Vodou. Having royal, public, and private expressions, Vodun spirit-based traditions served as cultural systems that supported or contested power and enslavement. At once suppliers and victims of the European slave trade, the people of Dahomey, Allada, and Hueda deeply shaped the emergence of Haiti''s creolized culture. The Haitian chapters focus on Vodou''s Rada Rite (from Allada) and Gede Rite (from Abomey) through the songs of Rasin Figuier''s Vodou Lakay and Rasin Bwa Kayiman''s Guede , legendary rasin compact discs released on Jean Altidor''s Miami label, Mass Konpa Records. All the Vodou songs on the discs are analyzed with a method dubbed "Vodou hermeneutics" that harnesses history, religious studies, linguistics, literary criticism, and ethnomusicology in order to advance a scholarly approach to Vodou songs.

Black Rock - William A. Dodge - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Black Rock - William A. Dodge - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

To visiting geologists Black Rock, New Mexico, is a basaltic escarpment and an ideal natural laboratory. To hospital workers, Black Rock is a picturesque place to earn a living. To the Zuni, the mesas, arroyos, and the rock itself are a stage on which the passion of their elders is relived. William A. Dodge explores how a shared sense of place evolves over time and through multiple cultures that claim the landscape. Through stories told over many generations, this landscape has given the Zuni an understanding of how they came to be in this world. More recently, paleogeographers have studied the rocks and landforms to better understand the world as it once was. Archaeologists have conducted research on ancestral Zuni sites in the vicinity of Black Rock to explore the cultural history of the region. In addition, the Anglo-American employees of the Bureau of Indian Affairs came to Black Rock to advance the federal Indian policy of assimilation and brought with them their own sense of place. Black Rock has been an educational complex, an agency town, and an Anglo community. Today it is a health care center, commercial zone, and multi-ethnic subdivision. By describing the dramatic changes that took place at Black Rock during the twentieth century, Dodge deftly weaves a story of how the cultural landscape of this community reflected changes in government policy and how the Zunis themselves, through the policy of Indian self-determination, eventually gave new meanings to this ancient landscape.

Uniting Mississippi - Eric Thomas Weber - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Uniting Mississippi - Eric Thomas Weber - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Uniting Mississippi applies a new, philosophically informed theory of democratic leadership to Mississippi's challenges. Governor William F. Winter has written a foreword for the book, supporting its proposals. The book begins with an examination of Mississippi's apparent Catch-22, namely the difficulty of addressing problems of poverty without fixing issues in education first, and vice versa. These difficulties can be overcome if we look at their common roots, argues Eric Thomas Weber, and if we practice virtuous democratic leadership. Since the approach to addressing poverty has for so long been unsuccessful, Weber reframes the problem. The challenges of educational failure reveal the extent to which there is a caste system of schooling. Certain groups of people are trapped in schools that are underfunded and failing. The ideals of democracy reject hierarchies of citizenship, and thus, the author contends, these ideals are truly tested in Mississippi. Weber offers theories of effective leadership in general and of democratic leadership in particular to show how Mississippi's challenges could be addressed with the guidance of common values. The book draws on insights from classical and contemporary philosophical outlooks on leadership, which highlight four key social virtues: wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice. Within this framework, the author approaches Mississippi's problems of poverty and educational frustration in a novel way that is applicable in and beyond the rural South. Weber brings to bear each of the virtues of democratic leadership on particular problems, with some overarching lessons and values to advance. The author's editorial essays are included in the appendix as examples of engaging in public inquiry for the sake of democratic leadership.

Uniting Mississippi: Democracy and Leadership in the South applies a new, philosophically informed theory of democratic leadership to Mississippi''s challenges. Governor William F. Winter has written a foreword for the book, supporting the proposals that it presents. The book begins with an examination of Mississippi''s apparent Catch-22, namely the difficulty of addressing problems of poverty without fixing issues in education first, and vice versa. The author argues that this apparent difficulty can be overcome. Since the approach to addressing poverty has for so long been unsuccessful, the problem of poverty is reconsidered. The challenges of educational failure are explored to reveal the extent to which there appears to be a caste system of schooling, in which certain groups of people are educated in schools that are underfunded and failing. The ideals of democracy reject hierarchies of citizenship, and thus are tested in Mississippi. Theories of good leadership in general and of democratic leadership in particular are introduced to show how Mississippi''s challenges could be addressed with the guidance of democratic values. The book draws on insights from classical and contemporary philosophical outlooks on leadership, which highlight four key social virtues: wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice. Within this framework, Mississippi''s problems of poverty and educational frustration are approached in a novel way that is applicable in and beyond the rural South. Each of the virtues of democratic leadership is emphasized with regard to particular problems, and the book includes some overarching lessons to draw and values to advance. The Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi - - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Contributions by Chris Myers Asch, Emilye Crosby, David Cunningham, Jelani Favors, Françoise N. Hamlin, Wesley Hogan, Robert Luckett, Carter Dalton Lyon, Byron D'Andra Orey, Ted Ownby, Joseph T. Reiff, Akinyele Umoja, and Michael Vinson Williams Based on new research and combining multiple scholarly approaches, these twelve essays tell new stories about the civil rights movement in the state most resistant to change. Wesley Hogan, Françoise N. Hamlin, and Michael Vinson Williams raise questions about how civil rights organizing took place. Three pairs of essays address African Americans' and whites' stories on education, religion, and the issues of violence. Jelani Favors and Robert Luckett analyze civil rights issues on the campuses of Jackson State University and the University of Mississippi. Carter Dalton Lyon and Joseph T. Reiff study people who confronted the question of how their religion related to their possible involvement in civil rights activism. By studying the Ku Klux Klan and the Deacons for Defense in Mississippi, David Cunningham and Akinyele Umoja ask who chose to use violence or to raise its possibility. The final three chapters describe some of the consequences and continuing questions raised by the civil rights movement. Byron D'Andra Orey analyzes the degree to which voting rights translated into political power for African American legislators. Chris Myers Asch studies a Freedom School that started in recent years in the Mississippi Delta. Emilye Crosby details the conflicting memories of Claiborne County residents and the parts of the civil rights movement they recall or ignore. As a group, the essays introduce numerous new characters and conundrums into civil rights scholarship, advance efforts to study African Americans and whites as interactive agents in the complex stories, and encourage historians to pull civil rights scholarship closer toward the present.

The Port Royal Experiment - Kevin Dougherty - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

The Port Royal Experiment - Kevin Dougherty - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

The Port Royal Experiment builds on classic scholarship to present not a historical narrative but a study of what is now called development and nation-building. The Port Royal Experiment was a joint governmental and private effort begun during the Civil War to transition former slaves to freedom and self-sufficiency. Port Royal Harbor and the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina were liberated by Union Troops in 1861. As the Federal advance began, the white plantation owners and residents fled, abandoning approximately 10,000 black slaves. Several private northern charity organizations stepped in to help the former slaves become self-sufficient. Nonetheless, the Port Royal Experiment was only a mixed success and was contested by efforts to restore the status quo of white dominance. Return to home rule then undid much of what the experiment accomplished. While the concept of development is subject to a range of interpretations, in this context it means positive, continuously improving, and sustained change across a variety of human social conditions. Clearly such an effort was at the heart of the Port Royal Experiment. While the term ""nation-building"" may seem misplaced given that no ""nation"" was the beneficiary of these efforts, the requirement to build institutions critical to nation-building operations was certainly a large part of the Port Royal Experiment and offers many lessons for modern efforts at nation building. The Port Royal Experiment divides into ten chapters, each of which is designed to treat a particular aspect of the experience. Topics include planning considerations, philanthropic society activity, civil society, economic development, political development, and resistance. Each chapter presents the case study in the context of more recent developmental and nation-building efforts in such places as Bosnia, Somalia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan and incorporates recent scholarship in the field. Modern readers will see that the challenges that faced the Port Royal Experiment remain relevant, even as their solutions remain elusive.

A History of the Mississippi Governor's Mansion - David G. Sansing - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

A History of the Mississippi Governor's Mansion - David G. Sansing - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

A History of the Mississippi Governor''s Mansion by David G. Sansing and Carroll WallerSince 1842, when Governor Tilghman M. Tucker and his family occupied the Mansion shortly after his inauguration on January 10, the Mississippi Governor''s Mansion has served as the state''s official executive residence. Designed by William Nichols in the popular classical style, the Mansion soon became a Jackson landmark, and a legendary hospitality surrounded its early years. Mississippi''s First Families "threw open the door" of the Mansion and shared its hospitality with plain citizens as graciously and generously as they did with celebrities. This tradition was interrupted only during the Civil War when the state capital was moved to eastern Mississippi to escape the advance of Union troops. Although much of Jackson was burned during the Vicksburg campaign in the summer of 1863, the Mansion was spared. General William T. Sherman used it briefly as a command post, and his troops bivouacked on its spacious grounds. At the beginning of the twentieth century, advancing real estate prices in Jackson caused the legislature to consider the disposal of the Mansion to make its downtown location available for commercial development. This proposal prompted various civic and patriotic organizations across the state to wage a "Save the Mansion" campaign. The legislature was implored not to destroy "what Sherman would not burn." Sentiment prevailed over commerce, and the Mansion was saved. However, structural deterioration over the next seventy years was left uncorrected, and by 1971 was so advanced that the First Family was advised to vacate the building. During the following election campaign, Carroll Waller, wife of gubernatorial candidate Bill Waller, called upon the women of Mississippi to join her in an effort to preserve the "home of our heritage" and to restore it to its past splendor. Following his election, Governor Waller and the First Lady initiated a three-year project that restored the Mansion to the historical period of its construction and guaranteed its continued use for many years to come. The Mansion was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.David G. Sansing is professor emeritus of history at the University of Mississippi. Carroll Waller, wife of former Mississippi governor Bill Waller, is a native of Jackson and a graduate of Mississippi College. While first lady, she was one of the leading forces that initiated and coordinated the restoration of the Mississippi Governor''s Mansion.

Roger Corman - - Bog - University Press of Mississippi - Plusbog.dk

Roger Corman (b. 1926) is known by many names-craftsman, artist, maverick, schlockmeister, mini-mogul, mentor, cheapskate, and King of the B''s. Yet his commitment to filmmaking remains inspired. He learned his craft at the end of the studio system, only to rebel against Hollywood and define himself as the true independent. And the list of directors and producers who learned under his tutelage--Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, and many more--is astonishing. Collected here are many of the most honest and revealing interviews of his epic career, several of which have never been seen in print. Roger Corman: Interviews brings into focus a life committed to the entertaining art of motion pictures. Corman''s rare talent combined artistic drive with business savvy, ensuring a successful career that was constantly in motion. At a remarkable pace more akin to silent movies than modern Hollywood, he directed over fifty films in less than fifteen years, some entertaining ( Not of This Earth ), trendsetting ( The Wild Angels ), daring ( The Intruder ), workmanlike ( Apache Woman ), stylized ( The Masque of the Red Death ) and even profound (X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes). In a single year, Corman famously shot a cult classic in two and a half days ( The Little Shop of Horrors ), reinvigorated the American horror film with a dash of Poe and Price ( House of Usher )--and still turned out a few more films shot across the globe. Recently awarded an honorary Oscar for his lifetime contribution to cinema, the self-made Corman has created a legacy as a defining filmmaker.
