"Balkanization" is a modern term describing the fragmentation and re-division of countries and nations in the Balkan Peninsula, as well as a dynamic meaning "the Balkan way of doing things." The Roots of Balkanization describes the historical changes that took place in the Balkan Peninsula after the collapse of the Roman Empire and their impact in Eastern lands. It develops conclusions reached in the author''s previous book, Dacia: Land of Transylvania, Cornerstone of Ancient Eastern Europe, covering 500 B.C.-A.D. 500. Balkan multi-ethnicity was formed after the fifth century, when barbarian invaders settled and violently mixed with the native ancient nations. By the use of sword and terror, warlords became kings and their confederations of tribes became state nations. New societies emerged under the blessing of the Orthodox Church, only to fight against each other over disputed land that eventually came to be occupied by other invaders. The involvement of western powers and the Ottoman expansion triggered more grievances and violence, culminating with the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the end of the Byzantine Empire. The medieval culture of the Balkans survived and continues to play a major role in how business and political life is conducted today in Eastern Europe.

In Rediscovering Japan, Reintroducing Christendom Japan''s unvoiced Christian history and cultural roots are examined from an alternative perspective. It is commonly believed that Christianity was introduced to Japan by the Spanish and Portuguese missionaries during the 1500s; however, Samuel Lee draws on various forms of cultural, religious and linguistic evidence to argue that Christianity was introduced to Japan through the Lost Tribes of Israel, who were converted to Christianity through the missionary efforts of the Assyrian Church of the East around A.D. 500. Much of the evidence he discusses has become submerged into many Japanese folkloric songs, festivals and is to be found in temples. There are, for example, approximately 300 words in Japanese and Hebrew/Aramaic that are similar. Further, Dr. Lee outlines the history of Catholicism in Japan during the 1500s, the systematic persecution of Christians from 1600s to the 1800s, and the rise of Protestant Church in Japan. The historical portion of the book ends with an analysis and discussion of 21st century Japanese society. Lastly, in Rediscovering Japan, Reintroducing Christendom, Samuel Lee questions the missiological methods of Western Christianity and advocates an approach based in dialogue between Christianity and other cultures.

In addition to deconstructing misogynist archetypes of Eve, Escofet and Allende explore the figure of Adam''s sexually active ex-partner Lillith, who has typically been portrayed as the negative Other. For generations the she-devil myth which surrounds her has resurfaced in the media, where she assumes the roles of innumerable evil female characters. Alongside Eve and Lillith, black and indigenous characters express dissent by retelling their stories in words and performance. These stories weave new ways of understanding female sexuality by reclaiming female divinities or heroines.

Why is it that for so many to validate their beliefs they must deny the beliefs of others? Religious extremism is driven by fear, in many cases authentic, that is initiated by the certainty of death. Death is an unknown that every faith must negotiate and overcome in order for its adherents to achieve peace of mind. Because of death''s inherent insecurity, any rival concept that threatens a religion''s "safe haven" can prompt dramatic reactions. It is these reactions that threaten any chance of religious tolerance and perpetuate today''s increasingly polarized and contentious environment. Visceral protective emotions notwithstanding, there have been notable eras of relative religious tolerance. Two examples are the reigns of Asoka the Buddhist King of Magadha, present Northern India, from 273 to 232 B.C.E.; and Al Andalus in Muslim Spain from 750 to 100 C.E. Ecumenism and genuine inter-religious dialogue that still exist today characterized these and other periods of history.
