Postharvest Extension and Capacity Building for the Developing World - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Postharvest Extension and Capacity Building for the Developing World - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

It is estimated that around 1.3 billion tons per year of food produced for human consumption, which is about one-third of all food produced, is either lost or wasted globally. Reduction of the postharvest losses is being considered as one of the sustainable ways to ensure world food security. Postharvest Extension and Capacity Building for the Developing World provides information on postharvest extension/outreach programs, capacity building, and practical methodologies for postharvest extension professionals and food science teachers, food processing trainers, and outreach specialists who work in the field. The book provides information on training of postharvest trainers, food loss assessment methods, capacity building in universities and agro-industry, distance education methods, models for cost effective postharvest/food processing extension work, success stories, and lessons learned from past projects and programs. The book is divided into four sections. Section I explains postharvest loss assessments methods, Section II is on capacity building, and Sections III and IV focus on training and postharvest extension models. Food loss assessment methodologies are highlighted from several high-profile institutions and it is envisioned that researchers and postharvest extension personnel will benefit from the development and field testing of a hybrid methodology, incorporating the strengths and utilizing the best practices from each of the methodologies in current use. Chapters cover postharvest extension work and capacity building in a wide range of regions.

The Cooperative Extension Service - James A Christenson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Cooperative Extension Service - James A Christenson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Cooperative Extension Service, a publicly supported educational agency, is continually struggling to define its proper function and purpose in our changing society. Should its mission be broadly based or narrowly focused? Should staff members be generalists or specialists? Should its clients be primarily rural or urban, farm or nonfarm? What role should Extension play in the information networks of the twenty-first century? Professors Warner and Christenson take a broad look at these and other questions concerning where the Extension Service has been, how well it is doing, and where it ought to go. Theirs is, first, the only comprehensive national survey that looks at the total Extension organization rather than at just one program area. Second, it expresses the viewpoint of Extension clients and the public, rather than that of the organization''s staff; and third, it combines outside survey information with data recorded in the Extension Management Information System (EMIS) and other routine agency reports. The authors evaluate, among other things, the extent of public awareness of the agency and its four major program areas (agriculture, home economics, 4-H, and community development), determine the users and nonusers of the programs and the accessibility of programs to the general population, identify the level of satisfaction with existing programs, and outline priorities and policy issues for the future.

Focusing on how a machine "feels" and behaves while operating, Machine Elements: Life and Design seeks to impart both intellectual and emotional comprehension regarding the "life" of a machine. It presents a detailed description of how machines elements function, seeking to form a sympathetic attitude toward the machine and to ensure its wellbeing through more careful and proper design. The book is divided into three sections for accessibility and ease of comprehension. The first section is devoted to microscopic deformations and displacements both in permanent connections and within the bodies of stressed parts. Topics include relative movements in interference fit connections and bolted joints, visual demonstrations and clarifications of the phenomenon of stress concentration, and increasing the load capacity of parts using prior elasto-plastic deformation and surface plastic deformation. The second part examines machine elements and units. Topics include load capacity calculations of interference fit connections under bending, new considerations about the role of the interference fit in key joints, a detailed examination of bolts loaded by eccentrically applied tension forces, resistance of cylindrical roller bearings to axial displacement under load, and a new approach to the choice of fits for rolling contact bearings. The third section addresses strength calculations and life prediction of machine parts. It includes information on the phenomena of static strength and fatigue; correlation between calculated and real strength and safety factors; and error migration.

Machine Learning and its Applications - Peter Wlodarczak - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

In recent years, machine learning has gained a lot of interest. Due to the advances in processor technology and the availability of large amounts of data, machine learning techniques have provided astounding results in areas such as object recognition or natural language processing. New approaches, e.g. deep learning, have provided groundbreaking outcomes in fields such as multimedia mining or voice recognition. Machine learning is now used in virtually every domain and deep learning algorithms are present in many devices such as smartphones, cars, drones, healthcare equipment, or smart home devices. The Internet, cloud computing and the Internet of Things produce a tsunami of data and machine learning provides the methods to effectively analyze the data and discover actionable knowledge. This book describes the most common machine learning techniques such as Bayesian models, support vector machines, decision tree induction, regression analysis, and recurrent and convolutional neural networks. It first gives an introduction into the principles of machine learning. It then covers the basic methods including the mathematical foundations. The biggest part of the book provides common machine learning algorithms and their applications. Finally, the book gives an outlook into some of the future developments and possible new research areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence in general. This book is meant to be an introduction into machine learning. It does not require prior knowledge in this area. It covers some of the basic mathematical principle but intends to be understandable even without a background in mathematics. It can be read chapter wise and intends to be comprehensible, even when not starting in the beginning. Finally, it also intends to be a reference book. Key Features: Describes real world problems that can be solved using Machine Learning Provides methods for directly applying Machine Learning techniques to concrete real world problems Demonstrates how to apply Machine Learning techniques using different frameworks such as TensorFlow, MALLET, R

Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning - Yuri S. Popkov - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning - Yuri S. Popkov - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning presents a new approach to machine learning—entropy randomization—to obtain optimal solutions under uncertainty (uncertain data and models of the objects under study). Randomized machine-learning procedures involve models with random parameters and maximum entropy estimates of the probability density functions of the model parameters under balance conditions with measured data. Optimality conditions are derived in the form of nonlinear equations with integral components. A new numerical random search method is developed for solving these equations in a probabilistic sense. Along with the theoretical foundations of randomized machine learning, Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning considers several applications to binary classification, modelling the dynamics of the Earth’s population, predicting seasonal electric load fluctuations of power supply systems, and forecasting the thermokarst lakes area in Western Siberia. Features • A systematic presentation of the randomized machine-learning problem: from data processing, through structuring randomized models and algorithmic procedure, to the solution of applications-relevant problems in different fields • Provides new numerical methods for random global optimization and computation of multidimensional integrals • A universal algorithm for randomized machine learning This book will appeal to undergraduates and postgraduates specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning, researchers and engineers involved in the development of applied machine learning systems, and researchers of forecasting problems in various fields.
