Lost in the Grooves - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Lost in the Grooves - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Do you remember these great pop stars and their hits? Deerhoof''s The Man , The King , The Girl Butch Hancock''s West Texas Waltzes and Dust Blown Tractor Tunes, Swamp Dogg''s Cuffed, Collared and Tagged, Michael Head''s The Magical World Of The Strands, John Trubee''s The Communists Are Coming to Kill Us, John Phillips''s Wolf King of L.A., and Michel Magne''s Moshe Mouse Crucifiction ? You will when you read Lost in the Grooves, a fascinating guide to the back alleys off the pop music superhighway. Pop music history is full of little-known musicians, whose work stands defiantly alone, too quirky, distinctive, or demented to appeal to a mass audience. This book explores the nooks and crannies of the pop music world, unearthing lost gems from should-have-been major artists (Sugarpie DeSanto, Judee Sill), revisiting lesser known works by established icons (Marvin Gaye''s post-divorce kissoff album, Here My Dear ; The Ramones'' Subterranean Jungle ), and spotlighting musicians who simply don''t fit into neat categories (k. mccarty, Exuma). The book''s encyclopedic alphabetical structure throws off strange sparks as disparate genres and eras rub against each other: folk-psych iconoclasts face louche pop crooners; outsider artists set their odd masterpieces down next to obscurities from the stars; lo-fi garage rock cuddles up with the French avant-garde; and roots rock weirdoes trip over bubblegum. This book will delight any jukebox junkie or pop culture fan.

Seizing the Future - Michael G. Zey - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Seizing the Future - Michael G. Zey - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Our encounters with the physical world are filled with miraculous puzzles-wind appears from somewhere, heavy objects (like oil tankers) float on oceans, yet smaller objects go to the bottom of our water-filled buckets. As adults, instead of confronting a whole world, we are reduced to driving from one parking garage to another. The Child''s Conception of Physical Causality, part of the very beginning of the ground-breaking work of the Swiss naturalist Jean Piaget, is filled with creative experimental ideas for probing the most sophisticated ways of thinking in children. The strength of Piaget''s research is evident in this collection of empirical data, systematically organized by tasks that illuminate how things work. Piaget''s data are remarkably rich. In his new introduction, Jaan Valsiner observes that Piaget had no grand theoretical aims, yet the book''s simple power cannot be ignored. Piaget''s great contribution to developmental psychology was his "clinical method"-a tactic that integrated relevant aspects of naturalistic experiment, interview, and observation. Through this systematic inquiry, we gain insight into children''s thinking.Reading Piaget will encourage the contemporary reader to think about the unity of psychological phenomena and their theoretical underpinnings. His wealth of creative experimental ideas probes into the most sophisticated ways of thinking in children. Technologies change, yet the creative curiosity of children remains basically unhindered by the consumer society. Piaget''s data preserve the reality of the original phenomena. As such, this work will provide a wealth of information for developmental psychologists and those involved in the field of experimental science.

B-Sides, Undercurrents and Overtones: Peripheries to Popular in Music, 1960 to the Present - George Plasketes - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd -

B-Sides, Undercurrents and Overtones: Peripheries to Popular in Music, 1960 to the Present - George Plasketes - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd -

There are undercurrents and peripheral taste preferences that are a defining part of our individual and collective cultural experience. Music is no exception. George Plasketes adapts the iconic "A-side/B-side" dichotomy from the 45 r.p.m. for use as a unique conceptual, critical, historical, and cultural framework for exploring and threading together a variety of popular music and media texts. The profiles and perspectives focus on the peripheries; on texts which might be considered "B-sides"”overlooked, underappreciated, and unsung cases, creators, patterns and productions that have unassumingly, but significantly, marked popular culture, music and media during the past 40 years. The underappreciated yet enduring contributions of a variety of creative individuals in music, television and film are a centerpiece of this volume: actress Doris Day''s son, Terry Melcher, a 1960s music producer whose imprint is on the surf, country blues, garage pop and most importantly the folk rock genre; Hans Fenger''s kid chorus cover project, a musical variation of "outsider art" that became representative of the tribute wave that began in the 1990s and continues today; versatile guitarist virtuoso Ry Cooder''s extensive film soundtrack work; World Music "missionary efforts" of American artists beyond Paul Simon''s Graceland, including Neil Diamond''s precursor with Tap Root Manuscript in the 1970s and the exotic adventures of Henry Kaiser and David Lindley in Madagascar and Norway”to name just a few examples. These B-sides represent undercurrents, but they resonate as overtones in the mainstream of music and culture, many as historical hinges. Collectively, these B-sides are an A-side antidote of outskirt observations, individual snapshots of artists, artifacts and rituals, genres and generations, producers and musical productions in television, film and video. They constitute an important connect-the-dots cultural chronicle with a multi-layered context”social, legal, historic, economic, technological, generational, aesthetic”for interpreting the interrelations between creators and institutions, the music market place, the production of culture and important connections between the peripheral and the popular.
