Modern roller derby has been theorised as a gendered leisure context, offering women opportunities for empowerment and growth, and enabling them to carve a space for themselves in sport. No longer a women-only sport, roller derby is now played by all genders and has been heralded as a model of inclusivity within sport. Identity, Belonging, and Community in Men’s Roller Derby offers an insight into how men’s roller derby culture is created and maintained, how members forge an identity for themselves and their team, and how they create feelings of belonging and inclusivity. Through in-depth ethnographic study of a specific, localised roller derby community, this book examines how practices of skills capital intersect with different configurations of masculinity in a continual struggle between traditional and inclusive models of sport. An interrogation of the ways a DIY sport can be seen to be achieved, experienced, and understood in everyday practice, this book will appeal to scholars of men, masculinities, and sport. Hence, the present ICOLD Bulletin 177 supersedes ICOLD Bulletin 126 (‘Roller-compacted concrete dams - State of the art and case histories’, published in 2003) and ICOLD Bulletin 75 (‘Roller-Compacted Concrete for Gravity Dams’ published in 1989). While roller-compacted concrete technology could have still been considered a new technology in 2003, it is now true to say that construction by roller-compaction has become the standard approach for large concrete gravity dams. This Bulletin addresses all aspects of the planning, design, construction and performance of RCC in dams. Mixture proportioning and quality control are discussed and a comprehensive listing of references is included. Many aspects of RCC in dams have become better understood since the publication of Bulletin N o 126 and the present Bulletin contains less information on the particular approaches applied in different countries, but includes more comprehensive information particularly in relation to design, mixture proportioning and construction. With greater understanding, it has further been possible to highlight more definitively the requirements of successful RCC dams, as well as the pitfalls and difficulties that can be associated with RCC dam design and construction. This book is an ethnographic study of clay idol-makers of Kumartuli in Kolkata, India. Much of the visibility and identity of Kolkata’s creative culture has been dependent upon the clay artists of Kumartuli for the last 100 years or so. This book explores the nature of the carefully constructed identity of these idol-makers as mritshilpis , or clay artists, who, as opposed to ordinary potters, work with their hands instead of a wheel. It looks at how the mritshilpis consciously embrace and expand their market based on this variation and elevated status as artists instead of artisans and studies the embeddedness of this identity within the commodity markets. It also shows that commodity markets, in this case the market of clay idols, are an outcome of trends of urbanisation, popular demand, corporatisation and commodification of culture, all of which have shaped the contours of clay idol-making as not only an occupation but a brand identity. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and in-depth interviews, the book highlights the larger structural relationship between urbanisation, indigenous occupational categories and identity politics. It will be indispensable to scholars and researchers of sociology, social anthropology, political studies, cultural history, urban economy, art history, urbanisation, cultural studies and urban sociology.
