Beginning with pop and rock music, Chris was soon drawn to the country blues. After exploring that tradition, he studied classical and jazz music, the traditional music of the British Isles, bluegrass and old-time Appalachian music, and, finally, began to investigate the world of the 12-string guitar.In 1982, Chris won the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship and released his first recording, ?Runoff.? This lesson features a mixed bag of six songs arranged in a variety of ways with the idea of adding some spicy seasoning to the fingerpicker’s cookbook. The lesson employs tricks and licks that Cory has picked up over the years in his quest to find his own “style”. In this almost four hour lesson each song has it’s own built-in exercises for fingerpicker’s looking to head in new directions. The old standard A Sin To Tell A Lie becomes a highly arpeggiated waltz with some fun licks up the neck. Somebody Stole My Gal incorporates counterpoint, chord inversions, and nice bass movement. The old jug band tune Sadie Green (The Vamp of New Orleans) gets revamped with a feel that bounces from down low New Orleans rumba to punchy ragtime picking and back again. A highly unorthodox treatment of Blind Willie McTell’s East St Louis Blues gets deep into Cooder-esque syncopation, and a chorus was added to make it a little less repetitive. The instrumental “showpiece” No Hiding Place was influenced by Cool John Ferguson’s virtuosic zinger off of a Music Maker Relief Foundation music compilation (likely Ferguson’s take on the old gospel number No Hiding Place Down Here), and then taken on a bunch of detours. Those looking to “Africanize” their playing will enjoy Cory’s take on The Parting Glass which takes this old Celtic drinking ballad on a trip to east Africa, featuring funky polyrhythms and muted strings in 12/8. The British folk club scene is a fairly huge and unique underground institution. At anytime since the early 1960's you would have been able to find a thousand or so weekly or monthly clubs gathering in all sizes of pub rooms around the land and in the Universities and colleges. In the great majority of these the guitar has been the commonest instrument; picked, strummed, thrashed and caressed in a multitude of styles and levels of competence. Fashions and fads come and go, but certain players have such a widespread influence that their own styles become part of the mainstream. When I heard the tapes of this album it impressed me as the essential John James. Probably because he was a working musician, "live" that is, I never felt that his earlier studio albums (except for "Sky In My Pie" with Peter Berryman) did him full justice. His recent Kicking Mule debut "Descriptive Guitar Instrumentals" was probably the first to really showcase what a lively, fluent, creative and dynamic player he really is. This one not only does all that but really catches the essence of a John James performance. I'm a great believer in albums which truly represent the artist and if you've never seen John "live" you can take my word for it that this one does. What's more, it has a real cross section of the favourite tunes and songs from his stage repertoire over the past decade, plus a selection of newer goodies to join that company. ? Jackson, Mississippi attracted a host of blues musicians in the period 1910-1940. Many players from small towns made their way to Jackson, which as the capital of Mississippi and a much larger city, held forth the promise of more and better work opportunities, and the possibility of making a living playing music rather than driving a mule or chopping cotton. Some call it the greatest irony of all and some call It folk music. Remember the cowboy's love for his horse? Can you hear the wind whistling through the rigging of a 3-masted ship heading out of Liverpool to someplace distant and mysterious? Nothing strange there except that the singer Is an American.
