The orang-utan is a superb representative of a major sector of the structure of biological diversity in Sumatra and Borneo. Conservation of the living conditions of the orang-utan implies maintaining the integrity of the entire natural ecosystem of indigenous plant and animal species known as the West Malesian rainforest, i.e. the natural tropical evergreen forests of distinctive floral composition which stretch from the isthmus of Kra, in Thailand, across peninsular West Malaysia, south and eastwards, including Sumatra, Borneo and Java. The main question behind this study is: What is the current status of the orang-utan? Or in other words: • what is the current geographical distribution range? • what have been the trends in the size of its range and numbers? • to what extent is this range covered by (a) conservation areas, (b) timher concessions (i.e. modified habitat) and (c) plans for conversion (i.e. obliteration of the habitat)? • what is the current quality of habitat in this range and what is the prospect for conservation or restoration of such habitat? • what is a plausible average density of the ape in such habitat? • what are the prospects for protection of the ape? • what should and can be clone to give the ape a chance of survival? Several actions were undertaken to find answers to these questions, and the major results are: • In Sumatra the orang-utan has a much more extensive range than was hitherto

Vegetation between land and sea - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book was composed in honour of Dr. Ir. W. G. Beeftink to commemorate his retirement as a plant ecologist at the Delta Institute for H ydrobiological Research, Yerseke, The Netherlands. The editors'' main aim has been to collect scientific papers of Wim Beeftink''s friends and colleagues. The title of the book: ''Vegetation between land and sea. Structure and processes'' was originally proposed by Prof. Dr. W. H. O. Ernst. It was amended by Prof. Dr. J. J. Barkman. In our judgement it reflects the best attempt to cover the numerous and divergent contributions under one heading. Not all papers however fit the "field" covered by the title, and we use this word both literally and metaphorically. We are glad and proud that so many authors went through the strain of the production of a paper, ill'' most cases not scheduled, with eagerness. Due to the fact that Wim Beeftink has so many close friends in the field of plant ecology, this fiber amicorum covers a wide range of disciplines covered, in turn, by a great variety of people. The papers range from taxonomy to experimental physiology, from fungi to seed plants, from autecology to synsystematics. Environmental pollution and management studies are also included. The contents of the papers depict Wim''s personal evolution as a botanist. Retired professors as well as students are amongst the authors, heads of departments as well as technicians. It proves Wim''s ability to be of one mind with all ranks.

Access to Education in Europe - Paul Downes - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book identifies key elements of an international framework to develop systems-level change to promote access to education, including higher education, for socio-economically marginalized groups. It is based on interviews with senior government officials and senior management in universities, non formal education and prisons across 12 countries in Europe. The book identifies systemic obstacles to and opportunities for promotion of access to education for socio-economically excluded groups that are issues transferable to other countries'' contexts. It adopts a systemic focus on access across a range of domains of education, both formal higher education and non-formal education, as well as prison education. Through a focus on a more dynamic structuralist systems framework it develops an innovative post-Bronfenbrennerian view of system levels in lifespan developmental and educational psychology. It also develops an international agenda for reform in relation to these various system levels for access to education for socio-economically marginalized groups, through extraction of key structural indicators to evaluate reform progress in a transparent, culturally sensitive manner. The book identifies current gaps and strengths in policy, practice and structures that impact upon access to education, including higher education, across a range of countries. These gaps and strengths are illustrative and are to inform a strategic approach to system level change and development for the promotion of access to education for socio-economically marginalized groups in Europe and beyond. "Too many educational practices entrench social exclusion: it is an urgent priority across Europe that social justice policies are implemented for the inclusion of marginalised groups. Paul Downes'' analysis of these issues is timely. His conclusions are considered and practical: this book is a valuable and constructive resource for practitioners, academics and the policy community." Professor Alistair Ross , Jean Monnet ad Personam Professor of Citizenship Education in Europe, Emeritus Professor of Education, Institute for Policy Studies in Education, London Metropolitan University

Clinical Management of Melanoma - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Clinical Management of Melanoma - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Melanoma is a disease entity that has the capability of involving all organ systems of the human body. During the last decade a dramatic increase in the incidence of this disease has been noted. It is surpassed in this dreadful statistic only by carcinoma of the lung. During this time frame, much has been defined and written concerning the histopathology and prognostic fac- tors of this neoplastic disorder. The relative ease of maintaining this malig- nant cell in tissue culture has permitted the cellular biologist, tumor immu- nologist, immunochemist and geneticist an ideal in vitro experimental mod- el for advancing our understanding of human malignancy. Histopathologic features, prognostic factors, membrane antigenic expression and host-tumor relationship in this disease have all been extensively studied and it has thus become evident that melanoma can and does serve as a prototype for the study of human malignancies in general. Basic scientists including embry- ologists, immunologists, virologists, immunochemists, geneticists, biostatisti- cians and cellular biologists, should find this monograph of interest. Bridg- ing clinical specialists including the pathologist, diagnostic and therapeutic radiologist and epidemiologist will also find areas of interest in these writ- ings. Because of the fact that melanoma can involve all organ systems, clin- icians ranging from family practitioners to the subspecialists should become thoroughly familiar with the clinical aspects of this disease, which are fully covered in this book. Locoregional therapIes are discussed in some depth.
