Contributors examine gender, race, class, sexual orientation, geography, and ethnicity in relation to feminist multicultural issues. . . . Highly recommended for students of feminism, multiculturalism, cultural studies, communication theory, and media analysis. --Choice "Most of the world′s women experience multiple forms of oppression, yet few communication scholars have prioritized this profound reality. Learning Through Real-World Problem Solving - Nancy G. Nagel - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Learning Through Real-World Problem Solving - Nancy G. Nagel - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

... An enlightening investigation of the process of integrative teaching and learning and the choreography of project work in the classroom. Ms. Nagel has translated her experiences into a rich discussion about facilitating inquiry and student learning through real-world problems. Marion Rice, Director of Teacher Education The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry "Nancy Nagel′s book is exactly the text needed for teacher education--it blends theory and practice. The integrative teaching and learning approach is well developed through rich case examples." Amy Driscoll, Professor, School of Education, Portland State University With a rapidly expanding knowledge base in this information age, today′s teachers are expected to add content to their existing curricula. But how can you add to your students′ already full day without leaving out something else? One answer is to integrate teaching and learning into the real world around your school, and engage your students in simultaneous learning--in language arts, science, art, mathematics, social studies--while they are trying to solve real problems. Here, Nancy Nagel discusses the ways in which the students can participate in directing their own learning while helping to create for themselves relevant learning experiences. The author presents actual cases taken from different schools where students learned while pursuing real-life goals, such as helping to select the optimum land use for property adjacent to their school. She provides examples of successful units, including feedback from students and teachers about the learning and teaching process. For teachers, administrators, curriculum development coordinators, and others interested in turning integrative teaching and learning into more than just another short-lived teaching fad, this new guide is recommended reading.

Complex Issues in Child Custody Evaluations - Philip M. Stahl - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Complex Issues in Child Custody Evaluations - Philip M. Stahl - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

This text is excellent and very timely. Philip Michael Stahl′s second volume is the perfect supplement to his Conducting Child Custody Evaluations because it deals with specific issues of great concern to evaluators: parental alienation, allegations of sexual abuse, domestic violence, move-away situations, and high conflict families. The chapter dealing with child considerations is also very well done. His discussion of developmental considerations is clear and supported by the latest research in the field. I also liked his treatment of children′s reaction to parental conflict, weighing the needs of the individual child with the needs of the sibling group, and giving the child a voice while protecting their privacy. I also appreciated his discussion of components of the evaluator′s recommendation, use of psychological testing, Rosemary Vasquez′s discussion of cultural issues, tackling the terror of testifying and ethical issues. Phil Stahl has written a very important text. It is timely, well written, and comprehensive. Nice work!!! --Hugh McIsaac, Oregon Family Institute When performing a custody evaluation, how do professionals deal with the issue of domestic violence? What impact does one parent′s moving away have on the evaluation? How should an evaluator handle high-conflict divorces? Over the past five to ten years, there has been a significant increase in the use of child custody evaluations by the courts. At the same time, the issues have become more complex and difficult. In this book, the author provides a theoretical and practical understanding of many of the factors that make custody evaluations complex. A key component is the integration of disparate research findings into a comprehensive resource that will enable the evaluator and the court to understand these complex issues. A second component is to provide a thorough understanding of the fact that divorce brings with it a set of complex needs, and evaluators and the courts must develop a paradigm for weighing these needs in a comprehensive manner. This book provides that paradigm.

Feminist Communication Theory - Laura A. Wackwitz - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Feminist Communication Theory - Laura A. Wackwitz - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

"This is a remarkable book that embraces the challenge of rethinking communication theory. Much more inclusive than most communication volumes, this guidebook offers a rich diversity of voices, along with a conceptual framework for remaking communication theory. Illuminating, innovative, eloquent-and transforming." -Cheris Kramarae, University of Oregon "This is a book not only of and for feminist communication theory, but of and for feminists. After a preface that marks and remarks in creative ways how the personal is political, Rakow and Wackwitz offer a compelling account of the need and potential of feminist theorizing for social and structural transformation. The collection represents a range of experiences, problems, voices, and thus will be useful to scholars, students, and activists." -Linda Steiner, Rutgers University Feminist Communication Theory is a book "of" and "for" feminist communication theorists, providing the potential to help individuals understand the human condition, name personal experiences and engage these experiences through storytelling, and give useful strategies for achieving justice. Lana F. Rakow and Laura A. Wackwitz examine the work of feminist theorists over the past two decades who have challenged traditional communication theory, contributing to the development of feminist communication theory by identifying its important contours, shortcomings, and promise. Arguing that feminist communication theory must address theories of gender, communication, and social change, Rakow and Wackwitz describe feminist communication theory as explanatory, political, polyvocal, and transformative. The book is constructed around the three key concepts of difference, voice, and representation to reflect on how feminist theory reshapes our thinking about gender and communication. Feminist Communication Theory represents a variety of voices from different theoretical, cultural, and geographic perspectives to illustrate the complex challenge of constructing new theoretical positions. Key Features - - Explores key works and issues of feminist theory relevant to gender and communication - - Examines a broad range, well beyond conventional wisdom, of women′s perspectives and experiences - - Provides tools to develop the theoretical potential of both feminist and communication theory Feminist Communication Theory is designed for undergraduate and graduate courses on feminist communication, gender and communication, communication theory, speech, rhetoric, and mass communication. The book will also be of interest to feminist scholars in a variety of disciplines, as well as students and scholars in Women′s Studies and Cultural Studies.

It is the definitive treatise on the fundamental concepts of acquiring and transferring knowledge. This is an invaluable contribution." Arlene H. Parisot, Director of Workforce Department Office of Commissioner of Higher Education Montana State System "This is a ′must′ read for all teachers and administrators in their search for meaning. Elaine Johnson has artfully captured the essence of the ′best practices′ conversation taking place in schools today by speaking directly to the heart of classroom experience." Stephen Olczak, Principal Reynolds High School Oregon Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) is a system for teaching that is grounded in brain research. Brain research indicates that we learn best when we see meaning in new tasks and material, and we discover meaning when we are able to connect new information with our existing knowledge and experiences. Students learn best, according to neuroscience, when they can connect the content of academic lessons with the context of their own daily lives. Johnson discusses the elements of the brain-compatible contextual teaching and learning system: making meaningful connections; investing school work with significance; self-regulated learning; collaboration; critical and creating thinking; nurturing the individual; reaching high standards; and using authentic assessment. Drawing on the practices of teachers in kindergarten through university, Johnson provides numerous examples of how to use each part of the CTL system. Contextual Teaching and Learning: What it Is and Why It′s Here to Stay is more than a handbook on precise steps to follow to help children of all abilities achieve high standards by joining academic lessons with their immediate context. This book also explains how the brain works, discusses why teachers need to pay attention to context, and makes a strong case for the need to teach students to think critically and creatively. This inspirational book urges educators to eliminate the student question: "Why do we have to learn this?" If the educators invest learning with meaning by relying on context, that question won′t have to be asked.

Healing Through Communication - Carol Leppanen Montgomery - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Healing Through Communication - Carol Leppanen Montgomery - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Advancing caring as an intrinsic part of nursing, the author of this volume offers a theory of caring that is grounded in both clinical practice and existing theory. Author Carol Leppanen Montgomery describes the qualities and behavioral manifestations the caregiver needs to communicate caring and the unique qualities of the health care system that shape the communication of caring. She then lauds transformative effects of caring while admitting the emotional risks caregivers undertake. Finally, a model is presented that describes the support necessary to sustain this level of communication and to help caregivers cope with the emotional demands of caring. Demonstrating the depth and complexity of caring communication, Healing Through Communication is a valuable resource for caregivers in all the helping disciplines, especially nursing, allied health, and social work. "This is an exceptional piece of writing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and heartily recommend it . . . . Is a book on this topic needed? Absolutely. Too often we make assumptions about the nature of caring, how it is learned, expressed, or enhanced. The placement of caring within a framework of relational communications is an extremely helpful way to visualize, teach, and support this phenomenon . . . . The strengths of this text are many, but briefly, I most appreciate the conceptual focus and placing of caring as a tangible, describable, communications phenomenon; the comprehensive treatment of the subject . . . and the many detailed exemplars of caring from a variety of caregiver roles and settings." --Mary Aukerman, Ph.D., R.N., Director of Nursing Education and Research, Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania " Healing Through Communication takes the concept of practice to a deeper level of understanding, experiencing, and living. The unique focus of this work is the way Dr. Montgomery places the caring-healing relationship as central to nursing education and practice." --Jean Watson, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., University of Colorado Health Sciences Center "This fine qualitative research report presents information about an essential topic of interest to educators, academicians, and clinicians working in the helping professions. The information presented would also be useful in assisting lay or volunteer helpers work with persons in need . . . . The book is an important work and adds significantly to the knowledge of caring . . . . I believe that this is a benchmark effort." --Sylvia A. The Disneyization of Society - Alan Bryman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Disneyization of Society - Alan Bryman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`Alan Bryman has expanded on his internationally well-known work on Disney theme parks and Disneyization to create a fascinating and highly readable book. It should prove of interest to beginning students in a number of different courses and fields, as well as to scholars interested in culture and consumption. There is no question that the model created by Disney, and emulated in whole or in part by many organizations and in many settings, will continue to influence social structure and culture well into the future. This is an important book about a significant social process. And, it manages to be a fun read, as well!′ - George Ritzer, author of McDonaldization and Professor of Sociology, University of Maryland `Bryman′s analysis of contemporay consumption is full of detail and provides a host of examples ranging from restaurants and hotels, to theme parks, zoos and sports stadia. Without doubt students will find it an accessible text, one that should allow them to think about consumption, familiar consumer products, settings and activities, sociologically′ - Barry Smart, Professor of Sociology, University of Portsmouth `Bryman′s dissection of Disneyization is a timely and significant contribution to the growing literature on Disney. In fact, his excellent analysis of the extension of Disneyization throughout society explains why we should care about the Disney phenomenon at all. This is not only an important book for Disney scholars, but for any one interested in the future of modern society′ - Janet Wasko Professor of Communication Studies, University of Oregon This is an agenda-setting new work in the sociology of culture and modern society. It argues that the contemporary world is increasingly converging towards the characteristics of the Disney theme parks. This process of convergence is revealed in: the growing influence of themed environments in settings like restaurants, shops, hotels, tourism and zoos; the growing trend towards social environments that are driven by combinations of forms of consumption: shopping, eating out, gambling, visiting the cinema, watching sports; the growth in cachet awarded to brands based on licensed merchandise; and the increased prominence of work that is a performance in which the employees have to display certain emotions and generally convey impressions as though working in a theatrical event. This insightful book demonstrates the importance of control and surveillance in consumer culture. Of interest to a wide variety of students studying in business, sociology, cultural studies, media studies and leisure studies courses this will also be of interest to anybody interested in understanding the intricacies of modern society.

A Pragmatic Approach to Business Ethics - Alex C. Michalos - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Michalos. . . offers his own approach to the topic in this clearly written (with humorous tone), well-structured, fully reasoned, and courageous presentation. . . . Each chapter offers a great deal of information, discusses numerous arguments, and takes an unambiguous stand. . . . the reader. . . will certainly benefit from this fairly broad approach to business ethics. --G. Enderle in Choice "Alex C. Michalos exemplifies how one proceeds on the assumption that ′God dwells in the details,′ and how one engages in an increasingly fuzzy world by balancing principled commitment and skepticism. As a direct result, you will find yourself getting sucked into a dialogue about things that matter to you, which is the whole point of A Pragmatic Approach to Business Ethics." --Jonathan B. King, Associate Professor of Management, Oregon State University "Professor Michalos has produced a marvelously valuable collection of work here. . . . To my knowledge, Professor Michalos has produced the only business ethics text marketed today that examines critical ethical issues from a consistently pragmatic perspective. In ′Ethical Considerations in Evaluation,′ Michalos develops a rigorous model demonstrating the compatibility of ethical and rational decision making. ′Fourteen Unsuccessful Ways to Pass the Buck′ presents fourteen thoughtful refutations of the argument that business people do not have moral responsibilities. What′s the matter with Machiavellian ethics? ′The Best and Worst Arguments for Business Ethics′ probes that question provocatively. Trust--an informed propensity to allow oneself to be vulnerable to harm in the interest of some perceived greater good--may be the single most important virtue to be gained from a study of A Pragmatic Approach to Business Ethics. . . . Michalos has done an outstanding job and I am confident that his text will be widely adopted." --Bill Shaw, Woodson Centennial Professor, Legal and Ethical Studies in Business, University of Texas, Austin "This book provides a very wide-ranging collection of examples of where business ethics make a difference - advertising, tobacco promotion, manufacture and marketing of armaments, concentration and taxation of wealth and the North American Free Trade Agreement. A well-presented collection of evidence that business and ethics can go together and provides support for a pragmatic approach." --Journal of Management Psychology Alex C. Michalos, long-time Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Business Ethics, argues for a pragmatic approach to business ethics and demonstrates the usefulness of the approach by applying it to a variety of issues within this remarkable book. The issues discussed are broad and far-reaching and include the relations between rational and moral/ethical decision making, the limits of loyalty to employers, the impact of trust on business, and the role of commercial public opinion polling during elections. Michalos also covers advertising, tobacco promotion, manufacture and marketing of armaments, concentration and taxation of wealth, and the North American Free Trade Agreement. Provocative and insightful, A Pragmatic Approach to Business Ethics provides a foundation for business ethics that is essential. This volume will be of interest to professionals in all fields and to students and scholars in business ethics and social issues in business courses.

Resolving Childhood Trauma - Catherine Cameron - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

This engaging and compassionate book provides a hopeful and helpful perspective for trauma survivors. Cameron′′s documentation of her extensive and innovative research with childhood abuse survivors is also a gift to the field of traumatic stress. She captures the experiences of her research participants-– including the challenging and significant domain of losing and regaining memory– in both quantitative and qualitative terms. Trauma survivors, counselors, and researchers will find in Resolving Childhood Trauma new information, humanity, wisdom, and hope. –Jennifer J. Freyd, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, University of Oregon "Cameron′s book provides the reader with an unusual depth of information about the long-term course of recovery from childhood sexual abuse. Her findings are rich and detailed, and offer a wealth of information about the process of healing, and about the power of ending silence. Well worth reading, particularly for the therapist new to the treatment of sexual abuse survivors." –Laura S. Brown, Ph.D., Independent Practice, Seattle, Washington "It took me longer to read this book than any of the hundreds I have reviewed! Not because it is dense or difficult to read, but because of the emotional intensity and power of the topic and its level-headed, balanced presentation. Kudos to the author! She has done a thorough piece of significant research and this book can make an enormous contribution to both professional and lay readers." –Barbara F. Okun, Ph.D., Professor of Counseling Psychology, Northeastern University "Resolving Childhood Trauma is an insightful integration of theory and practice for clinicians who treat abuse survivors. Catherine Cameron, through her clinical experience and research, offers the reader a greater understanding of the impact of child sexual abuse and the trauma accommodation syndrome. I highly recommend this volume to clinicians and researchers interested in a better understanding of efforts toward resolving childhood trauma." –Thomas W. Miller Ph.D. ABPP, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Kentucky and Professor of Education and Psychology at Murray State University "Catherine Cameron′s longitudinal, interview study of 51 childhood incest survivors presents extraordinary resources for us survivors from the dark realms. . . . This intimate, scientific portrait can assist CSA survivors in making sense of their own situation and planning a productive course of actions. Cameron has a special gift for naming the unspoken and capturing it with familiar methodology. Survivors of CSA can find in Cameron′s book the means to recover their social dignity and to meet their abusers at eye level, with equanimity." –Jean Maria Arrigo, Ph.D., Social Psychologist Can survivors of severe childhood trauma reclaim their lives as adults? Social psychologist Catherine Cameron addresses this question in a unique 12-year study of adult survivors of sexual abuse. Five successive surveys combine the richness of intensive personal interviews with objective measures of progress. Fifty-one women were consistently faithful to the project, as Cameron sought to understand their early trauma, its lasting impact, and to monitor their progress toward recovery. A final survey (1998) provided the epilogue for their story. As the new millennium dawns, these survivors have become strong, vital, and caring women. They have also provided valuable information, with implications far beyond themselves. Cameron grounds their personal stories by citing stunning parallels to the larger field of national and international trauma. The result is a compelling and deeply human story of trauma and triumph that transcends narrow application. It promotes understanding, dignity, and hope for all survivors traumatized by human design.

Click ′Additional Materials′ for downloadable sample chapter "George Huber makes an important contribution with profound insights on what the future firm will look like. It will be congruent with its environment. To realize opportunities from continuing advances in science and technology and environmental complexity, the successful firm in the future will be especially good at gaining environmental intelligence, learning and integrating knowledge, and being innovative and flexible. This is not a fanciful prophesy; it is a necessary logical conclusion that Huber draws from an extensive body of scientific knowledge." --Andrew H. Van de Ven, University of Minnesota, Past President of the Academy of Management, and coauthor of Organizational Change and Innovation Processes "Huber gives a compelling account of the future landscape that many managers have to face today. Filled with solid academic research laced with real-world examples, Huber not only conveys the shape of that landscape, but also the roadmap to navigate it." --Kathleen M. Eisenhardt, Stanford University and coauthor of Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos "This is an important book for any manager who faces a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive environment--which is to say, virtually every manager. Huber makes a cogent case for the fact that businesses will face much more dynamic and competitive environments in the future than they face today. More importantly, he offers practical advice for how managers can prepare for the uncertain future they face. Clearly written and carefully grounded in the best research evidence available, this book stands head and shoulders above the many management books offering short-term fads, fashions, and therapies of the moment." --Richard T. Mowday, University of Oregon, former President of the Academy of Management, and former Editor of the Academy of Management Journal Click ′Reviews′ to read more pre-publication praise for The Necessary Nature of Future Firms Survival depends on the ability to read imminent shifts in the environment and respond accordingly. This holds true for any living system, but it is especially true for firms today. The business environment is now changing rapidly, but will change even more rapidly in the future. Only firms that can respond to these changes will survive. It is important to know, then, how business′s future landscape will look. George Huber′s new book, The Necessary Nature of Future Firms , describes this landscape clearly and credibly and makes explicit the organizational attributes and management practices firms must possess to be among the ranks of the "future firms." Advances in science and technology will continue to affect business environments, making them more complex, dynamic and competitive. Moreover, this complexity and dynamism will increase at increasing rates. As the book makes clear, successful firms will cope with or exploit these changes by increasing their capabilities for correctly interpreting threats and opportunities, making decisions, acquiring and managing knowledge, innovating, and changing while simultaneously dealing with the needs for efficiency, flexibility, and employee commitment. The Necessary Nature of Future Firms is written for managers, especially those managing change. Professionals in a wide variety of organizational roles will find it a particularly useful reference for its foresight and as an invaluable tool in winning approval for projects and initiatives. Academics in change management, information systems, organizational science, strategy, and human resources management can draw on the book as a supplementary text or as a source for lecture materials. References housed in endnotes rather than in the text contribute to the book′s readability and ease of use, as does the accessible writing style. But for all its accessibility and reader friendliness, The Necessary Nature of Future Firms is still firmly grounded in scholarship. Hundreds of authoritative works and systematic studies specifically inform this book, as do Huber′s own studies and his interviews with over 100 middle- and upper-level managers about changes in their organizations. To add meaning and interest, the book′s insights and conclusions are elaborated with real world examples.
