Willie Sawgrass - Aida Gale - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Inspired by stories passed down through the author’s family, Willie Sawgrass is a middle-grade novel that takes place in the wilderness of Southwest Florida during the early 1900s when the cattle and fishing industry were strong but rum running was more lucrative. The main character, Willie, isn’t sure how old he is. He lives in a shack in the Florida scrub with his ignorant and abusive pa who doesn''t want him. Pa eventually sends him away to live with a young Miccosukee woman with a son of her own named Nakee who has a white father. Willie is not accepted by the native boys of the village, and tries to prove himself to them. The native boys use shell hatchets, but Willie''s prize possession is his metal hatchet that he masters for its many uses in his life. Willie and Nakee, form a tight bond and have many adventures together, including fighting an alligator and confronting a family of skunks. They eventually get stranded at sea in a dugout canoe only to be rescued by the well-educated Captain O''Keef. He takes the boys aboard the Bonnie Sue, as extra deckhands on the big fishing schooner and teaches them the importance of reading and writing. Things are going well for the boys and they''re feeling comfortable in their home on the Bonnie Sue, but everything changes after they rescue two men and some cattle from a sinking ship. Captain O''Keef and his crew sail to Cuba to sell the cattle, but things don''t go as planned for the captain which creates a mystery for the boys. Prohibition is in full swing in the U.S., and defying the captain''s orders, the crew finds a way to load the Bonnie Sue with crates of high-quality Cuban rum to sell in Florida. Willie and Nakee find themselves amid shady characters, but manage to solve the mystery and get their revenge in the end.

Fatal Depth - Joe Haberstroh - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Fatal Depth - Joe Haberstroh - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

At 11:10 p.m. on July 25, 1956, the luxurious Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria collided with the Stockholm forty-five miles south of Nantucket. Half a century later, the wreck of the Andrea Doria is still claiming lives. Professional and amateur divers the world round consider the Andrea Doria to be the Everest of diving. At 225 feet below the surface, the wreck lies at the very edge of human endurance and accomplishment; ordinary air becomes toxic and the divers who go there suffer nitrogen narcosis or "the rapture of the deep." Symptoms include confusion, lack of coordination, and perhaps most deadly of all, a loss of the ability to make clear decisions. As a result, divers use Trimix, an exotic blend of oxygen, nitrogen, and helium to descend through the strong currents, rusted metal, and twisted wires to the ultimate symbol of deep sea diving accomplishments: china teacups and plates from the wreck of the Andrea Doria. For serious wreck divers, these fragile artifacts are genuine proof of their abilities as divers.During the summers of 1998 and 1999, three elite divers lost their lives, all on separate dives from the top dive boat out of Montauk, the 65-foot Seeker. Craig Sicola was clearly suffering from "china fever" before he went down. He''d handled teacups brought up by veteran Doria diver Gary Gentile, and the gleam in Craig''s eye was unmistakable. Craig dove on June 24, 1998. A few hours later, his body bobbed to the surface. He was carrying a plate. Joe Haberstroh, the award-winning Newsday reporter, watched events unfold during the summers of 1998 and 1999. In this remarkable and intriguing book he recreates what was the pride of the Italian fleet, how it sank, the dangers of the deep, and the gripping personal stories of the men who live or die for a teacup from its remains.

The Bucket Flower - Donald R Wilson - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Bucket Flower - Donald R Wilson - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Twenty-three-year-old Elizabeth Sprague has recently graduated from her botany studies at Wellesley College and now wants to leave her secure life with her parents in Boston to go to the Florida Everglades to study the plants there—something that in 1893 no woman has ever done. Her domineering father has other plans for her, namely, marrying her to a young man Beth detests in order to join his business with that of a prominent family. Her solution is to go off to St. Augustine with her aunt as chaperone. Her family assumes this will satisfy her Florida longings, but once in St. Augustine she figures out a way to head farther south, wisely carrying a derringer in her handbag. What she finds there is a wild and forbidding frontier inhabited by dangerous animals and even more dangerous men. She is warned about the poisonous swamp miasmas, the evil “night folks," and especially the ominous Swamp Ape, a hairy half-creature–half-man said to roam there. But none of this will prepare her for what she finds lurking deep within the Glades. Beth finds much more than unique and interesting plants in the Everglades. She finds that she is a woman who can face danger of every sort—from hurricanes and alligators to wild and desperate men—and hold her own. She proves she isn''t just a “bucket flower," a pampered person unfit to face the rigors of the swamp. She finds her way, one much different from the one her parents had planned for her—and even quite different from the one she had planned for herself.

Lincoln's Way - Richard Striner - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Lincoln's Way - Richard Striner - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The debate is as old as the American Republic and as current as this morning''s headlines. Should a president employ the powers of the federal government to advance our national development and increase the influence and power of the United States around the world? Under what circumstances? What sort of balance should the president achieve between competing visions and values on the path to change? Over the course of American history, why have some presidents succeeded brilliantly in applying their power and influence while others have failed miserably? In Lincoln''s Way, historian Richard Striner tells the story of America''s rise to global power and the presidential leaders who envisioned it and made it happen. From Abraham Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt within the Republican Party, the legacy was passed along to FDR—the Democratic Roosevelt—who bequeathed it to Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy. Six presidents—three from each party—helped America fulfill its great potential. Their leadership spanned the huge gulf that exists between our ideological cultures: they drew from both conservative and liberal ideas, thus consolidating powerful centrist governance. No creed of mere "government for government''s sake," their program was judicious: it used government for national necessities. But it also brought inspiring results, thus refuting the age-old American ultra-libertarian notion that "the government that governs best, governs least." In a forceful narrative blending intellectual history and presidential biography, Striner presents the legacy in full. An important challenge to conventional wisdom, Lincoln''s Way offers both an intriguing way of looking at the past and a much-needed lens through which to view the present. As a result, the book could change the way we think about the future.
