''A truly page-turning, compulsive and also profoundly moving narrative. Superb.'' JAMES HOLLAND ''Gripping, urgent, superbly reported and brilliantly written'' DAN JONES ''A gripping and pacey book that reads like a thriller. I found it shocking in a world where I didn''t think I could be shocked any more. Henry Hemming wears his extensive research very lightly and manages to shape a great narrative from a complex and dark episode from our recent history. An important and skilfully crafted book.'' JOHN O''FARRELL HOW THE DEATH OF A SPY IN THE IRA LED TO ONE OF THE BIGGEST MURDER INVESTIGATIONS IN BRITISH HISTORY. On 26th May 1986, the body of an undercover British agent was found by the side of a muddy lane, with a rope tied around its wrists and tape over each eye. Years later, it was reported that this murder might have been carried out by another undercover British agent, known as ''Stakeknife''. Tyll - Daniel Kehlmann - Bog - Quercus Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Tyll - Daniel Kehlmann - Bog - Quercus Publishing - Plusbog.dk

''A masterly achievement, a work of imaginative grandeur and complete artistic control'' Ian McEwan ''Brilliant and unputdownable'' Salman Rushdie He''s a trickster, a player, a jester. His handshake''s like a pact with the devil, his smile like a crack in the clouds; he''s watching you now and he''s gone when you turn. Tyll Ulenspiegel is here!In a village like every other village in Germany, a scrawny boy balances on a rope between two trees. He''s practising. He practises by the mill, by the blacksmiths; he practises in the forest at night, where the Cold Woman whispers and goblins roam. When he comes out, he will never be the same.Tyll will escape the ordinary villages. In the mines he will defy death. On the battlefield he will run faster than cannonballs. In the courts he will trick the heads of state. As a travelling entertainer, his journey will take him across the land and into the heart of a never-ending war.A prince''s doomed acceptance of the Bohemian throne has European armies lurching brutally for dominion and now the Winter King casts a sunless pall. Between the quests of fat counts, witch-hunters and scheming queens, Tyll dances his mocking fugue; exposing the folly of kings and the wisdom of fools. With macabre humour and moving humanity, Daniel Kehlmann lifts this legend from medieval German folklore and enters him on the stage of the Thirty Years'' War. When citizens become the playthings of politics and puppetry, Tyll, in his demonic grace and his thirst for freedom, is the very spirit of rebellion - a cork in water, a laugh in the dark, a hero for all time.

SAS: My Trial By Fire: True Stories and Life Lessons from SAS Selection - Des Powell - Bog - Quercus Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Des Powell left school with no qualifications and little in the way of formal education. At nineteen he signed up to join the Parachute Regiment. Famously, the Paras is home to the UK military''s second-toughest training regime after the SAS. Des Powell knows all about both. In fact, Des knows SAS selection better than anyone because he''s done it twice. In SAS: Trial by Fire he tells the story of those gruelling tests: how Para training turned him into a soldier but, more crucially, how the SAS process turned him into a member of the elite. Des describes exactly what it takes to be an elite special forces operator. From raw recruit to trained fighting machine - including the heart-breaking moment he was forced to withdraw, only to begin the process again - Des shares the details of his personal journey, itself a tale of prevailing against almost overwhelming odd. He teaches us valuable life skills by taking us deep into the training regime itself: fitness, navigation, endurance, weapons and combat training, survival techniques in hostile climates, the terrifying jungle phase, the dark arts of escape and evasion, the secret of surviving interrogation. No one''s lifted the lid on what it takes to join the SAS and become the best of the best. Until now. Praise for Bravo Three Zero ''A must read. Honesty, integrity and real experience that puts you in the thick of the action.'' THE STORY BEHIND NEW BBC RADIO SERIES AND PODCAST "BLOOD LANDS" "Utterly gripping, timely and shocking" PHILIPPE SANDS "Compelling and disturbing . . . quietly devastating" DAMON GALGUT "This is a book of profound importance . . . A masterpiece" ALEXANDER McCALL SMITH "A vintage crime story . . . an extraordinary tale . . . It is written as a drama, part thriller, part tragedy" ALEC RUSSELL, Financial Times "A smartly paced true-crime thriller with a vivid cast of characters . . . as tense as it is disturbing" JOHN CARLIN, author of Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation Two dead men. Forty suspects. The trial that broke a small South African town "Look what the fucking dogs did to them, someone muttered. No-one mentioned the rope, or the monkey-wrench, or the gun, or the knife, or the stick, or the whip, or the blood-stained boots. In fact, no-one said much at all. It seemed simpler that way. There was no sense in pointing fingers.''" At dusk, on a warm evening in 2016, a group of forty men gathered in the corner of a dusty field on a farm outside Parys in the Free State. Some were in fury. Others treated the whole thing as a joke - a game. The events of the next two hours would come to haunt them all. They would rip families apart, prompt suicide attempts, breakdowns, divorce, bankruptcy, threats of violent revenge and acts of unforgivable treachery. These Are Not Gentle People is the story of that night, and of what happened next. It''s a courtroom drama, a profound exploration of collective guilt and individual justice, and a fast-paced literary thriller.Award-winning foreign correspondent and author Andrew Harding traces the impact of one moment of collective barbarism on a fragile community - exploding lies, cover-ups, political meddling and betrayals, and revealing the inner lives of those involved with extraordinary clarity. The book is also a mesmerising examination of a small town trying to cope with a trauma that threatens to tear it in two - as such, it is as much a journey into the heart of modern South Africa as it is a gripping tale of crime, punishment and redemption. When a whole community is on trial, who pays the price?

SAS Bravo Three Zero - Damien Lewis - Bog - Quercus Publishing - Plusbog.dk

''An incredible story, and so well told'' Bear Grylls ''Honesty, integrity and real experience that puts you in the thick of the action.'' Billy Billingham There were three patrols that fateful January 1991 morning: Bravo One Zero , Bravo Two Zero and Bravo Three Zero . It was the opening hours of the Gulf War and the SAS were flown deep behind enemy lines to hunt down Saddam''s Scud missiles, the use of which threatened a Third World War.The men of Bravo One Zero stepped off the chopper, took one look at the flat desert devoid of any cover and decided no way were they deploying into all of that. But Andy NcNab''s famed Bravo Two Zero patrol did deploy, with fatal results - all bar one being captured or killed. And then there was Bravo Three Zero . These men were different. Thought differently. Acted differently. Treating as gospel the SAS''s saying ''any fool can be uncomfortable'', they deployed with vehicles, and while there was nowhere to hide they could make a dash for the border if desperate.Even as warnings came in that McNab''s patrol was on the run, Bravo Three Zero remained undetected - the furthest Coalition forces behind Iraqi lines. Slipping through enemy positions, a string of targets were taken out. But with the desert turning bitter and snow starting to fall, they were forced to fight a running battle against the elements as much as the enemy.Though overshadowed by the fate of Bravo Two Zero , the achievements of this highly-decorated patrol are the stuff of elite forces legend. Now, for the first time, SAS veteran Des Powell reveals their story in gritty, blow-by-blow detail. Written with acclaimed military author Damien Lewis, this is a tale of edge-of-the seat daring deep inside enemy lands. Brutal, savage, unrelenting - prepare to be blown away, in a tale that proves utterly the SAS motto - who dares wins .

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * From the writer and executive producer of the award-winning Netflix series The Good Place that made moral philosophy fun: a foolproof guide to making the correct moral decision in every situation you ever encounter, anywhere on earth, forever *''An absolute breeze to read; funny and enlightening and revealing'' - Guardian ''Enormously enjoyable, useful and readable'' - The Times How can we live a more ethical life? This question has plagued people for thousands of years, but it''s never been tougher to answer than it is now, thanks to challenges great and small that flood our day-to-day lives and threaten to overwhelm us with impossible decisions and complicated results with unintended consequences.Plus, being anything close to an ''ethical person'' requires daily thought and introspection and hard work; we have to think about how we can be good not, you know, once a month, but literally all the time .To make it a little less overwhelming, this fascinating, accessible and funny book by one of our generation''s best writers and adept minds in television comedy, Michael Schur, boils down the whole confusing morass with real life dilemmas (from ''should I punch my friend in the face for no reason?'' to ''can I still enjoy great art if it was created by terrible people?''), so that we know how to deal with ethical dilemmas. Much as Chidi used humour and philosophy to make Eleanor a less selfish person, Schur takes us on a journey through the 2,500-year discussion of ethics, sketching a roadmap for how we ought to act along the way.By the time the book is done, we''ll know exactly how to act in every conceivable situation, so as to produce a verifiably maximal amount of moral good. We will be perfect, and all our friends will be jealous. OK, not quite. Instead, we''ll gain fresh, funny, inspiring wisdom on the toughest issues we face every dayWith contributions from Professor Todd May of Clemson University, who served as an advisor on The Good Place, this is a brilliant, clever and hugely entertaining book about one of the most important topics in the world.''The problem is, if all you care about in the world is the velvet rope, you will always be unhappy, no matter which side you''re on.'' - Tahani Al-Jamil, The Good Place

Smoky the Brave - Damien Lewis - Bog - Quercus Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The World''s Smallest Dog with the World''s Biggest Heart Smoky the Brave is the extraordinary, touching and true story of a heroic dog and her adoptive masters in the jungles of the Pacific War. In February 1944, as Japanese military advances threatened to engulf Australasia, a tiny, four-pound Yorkshire terrier was discovered hiding in a Japanese shell scrape amidst the thick jungles of Papua New Guinea. The GIs who discovered her presumed she had been some kind of Japanese army mascot, but it soon turned out that she understood neither commands rendered in Japanese nor English. A mystery, she was adopted by Corporal William ''Bill'' Wynne, an air-crewman with the US 5th Air Force''s 26th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron.Living in Bill Wynne''s tent, sleeping on a piece of green felt salvaged from a card table, and sharing his rations, Smoky became the de facto mascot of the regiment. She went on to fly numerous photo-recce and air-sea rescue missions, cocooned in a soldier''s pack hanging next to the machine-guns used to repel marauding Japanese fighters. She was awarded eight battle stars, surviving dozens of Japanese combat raids on Papua New Guinea, and braving a typhoon that ravaged Okinawa. After saving Wynne''s life by warning of a falling shell, as their landing craft approached an enemy-held beach - a shell that killed the eight men that Wynne was standing beside - he nicknamed her the ''angel from a foxhole''. In one of her most famous exploits Smoky parachuted using a special rig designed to fit one of the world''s smallest but toughest dogs.In perhaps her most heroic exploit of all, Smoky ran a cable through a seventy-foot pipe no wider in places than four inches, to enable telephone lines to be run across the recently occupied airbase of Luzon. Her efforts saved hundreds of ground-crew from being exposed to enemy bombing, preventing injury and loss of life. Amongst her many other awards, she was given the PDSA''s Certificate for Animal Bravery or Devotion in 2011, a relatively new class of PDSA award.
